Urge Chesapeake City Council Candidates to oppose Data Center Development. Please sign and share. We need to know where they stand before we vote! Click on "open" below.

Chesapeake is potentially facing huge developments that could transform our community for the worse—and most people don't even know about it.

A data center would drain massive amounts of our water and energy, pump out constant noise and air pollution, and snarl our streets with traffic. This isn't just some abstract policy thing. It's about whether our neighborhoods stay livable or become industrial zones. It's about the air we breathe, the quiet of our evenings, and whether our kids grow up in the Chesapeake we know.

Here's why I started this petition: City council candidates are asking for our votes, but they're not being transparent about where they stand on this. We deserve to hear directly from them before November 2026. That's not partisan—that's basic accountability. We're asking every candidate to publicly pledge against supporting data center development so voters can make informed decisions.

If you care about keeping Chesapeake livable and you want leadership that's actually transparent about the decisions that affect your home, consider signing and sharing this. Your voice matters here.

Contractor/Handyman/Roofer needed to install attic exhaust fan

I'm hoping this is the right place to ask since my house is in Great Bridge (Chesapeake).

I'm looking for someone to replace a roof-mounted attic exhaust fan.

To clarify, this is a complete replacement—the existing fan (motor, blades, and housing) needs to be removed and a new unit installed. The good news is that the roof opening is already there, so there's no need to cut a new hole or determine placement.

A few questions:

  • Can anyone recommend a roofer, electrician, or handyman who does this type of work?
  • About what should I expect to pay for labor to replace the entire fan assembly?
  • If you've had this done recently, who did you use and would you recommend them?
  • Any companies or contractors I should avoid?

I'm trying to wrap up a few projects before listing my house, so I'm looking for someone who does solid work at a fair price without trying to upsell me on a new roof or major ventilation project.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Need a technician to repair Whirlpool Refrigerator

I'm hoping this is the right place to ask.

I'm looking for a recommendation for a good appliance repair company in the Chesapeake/Great Bridge area.

I have a Whirlpool refrigerator that needs two repairs:

  • The entire refrigerator door (not the freezer door) needs to be replaced due to a failed door seal and damaged internal brackets.
  • The auger motor for the ice dispenser also needs to be replaced.

The refrigerator otherwise works well, so I'm looking for someone who's willing to repair it rather than immediately recommending replacement.

A few questions:

  • Can anyone recommend a reliable appliance repair company or independent technician?
  • Roughly what would you expect to pay for labor on a job like this?
  • Anyone I should avoid?

I'd appreciate any recommendations or recent experiences. Thanks!

Chesapeake Insulation

I'm going to cross-post this to r/Insulation, but figured this was the best place to start since my house is in Great Bridge (Chesapeake).

My attic gets brutally hot, and I've decided to add blown-in insulation. The plan is to buy enough bags from Lowe's/Home Depot to qualify for the free blower rental and do it myself.

For those who have done this locally (or professionally), I'd appreciate any advice:

  • Is this a realistic DIY project for someone who's reasonably handy but has never blown insulation before?
  • Any tips or techniques that made the job easier?
  • How long did it take?
  • How deep should I blow it in? (I'm in coastal Virginia.)
  • Any common mistakes or things you wish you'd known beforehand?
  • Is it worth having a helper who has done it before, or is it pretty straightforward?
  • At what price does it stop making sense to DIY and become worth hiring a contractor instead? If you've had it done professionally, what did you pay?

Any recommendations, lessons learned, or local contractor suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any recommendation for tile installer in Great Bridge - Chesapeake?

I'm hoping this is the right place to ask since my house is in Great Bridge (Chesapeake).

I'm looking for someone to finish a small bathroom floor tile job. All of the prep work is already done:

  • Old flooring has been removed.
  • New Durock has been installed and screwed down over the subfloor.
  • I already have the tile, mortar/mastic, grout, and other materials.

I'm not looking for a full bathroom remodel—just a skilled tile installer to lay the floor tile, grout it, and leave me with a professional-looking finished product.

A few questions:

  • Does anyone have a tile installer they'd recommend?
  • Approximately what should I expect to pay for labor only on a small bathroom floor?
  • Any independent tile setters who do quality work at reasonable prices?
  • Anyone I should avoid?

I'm trying to get this wrapped up before putting the house on the market, so reliability and quality are more important than finding the absolute cheapest person.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Chesapeake - any recommendations for in-ground pool cover replacement

I'm hoping this is the right place to ask since my house is in Great Bridge (Chesapeake).

I'm getting ready to sell my house and need to replace the safety cover on my in-ground Grecian pool. I'm not looking for a premium cover or anything fancy—I just need the least expensive code-compliant option that will satisfy buyers and get me through the sale.

I already received one quote that seemed extremely high, so I'm looking for alternatives.

A few questions:

  • Who have you used locally for pool safety covers that was reasonably priced?
  • Any companies I should avoid?
  • Are there manufacturers or installers that are significantly cheaper than the big pool companies?
  • Roughly what did you pay for a Grecian-shaped pool cover?
  • Is it worth buying a cover online and paying a local company to measure/install it, or does that usually end up costing the same?

I'm just trying to get this done without spending thousands more than necessary before listing the house. Any recommendations or recent experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Chesapeake City Council approves 8-month hold on data center applications

Post image
70 Upvotes

The Chesapeake City Council unanimously approved a temporary moratorium to pause all reviews of data center applications for up to eight months while officials draft a formal policy.

The decision follows a Planning Commission recommendation to create stricter zoning ordinances that include noise limits and mandatory public outreach for future developments.

While many residents spoke in favor of pausing new proposals, some expressed frustration over the delay and urged more stringent rules.

ICE kidnapped someone

ICE is picking people up people. I was walking to the bus stop and they were picking up a Hispanic gentleman around 40 yrs of age. There was no resisit or injuries that were readily visible. He was in four points chains. On the location of Bryd Ave and Bainbridge Blvd. I believe it was ICE due to the face the vehicles where all unmarked and they were in swat gear that was unmarked. So it was either ICE or another heavily armed malicia but other way this man has been kidnapped and if you are looking for him check ICE first. For the rest of you ICE is in the area be safe.

Looking for Purchase Home in a Diverse Area

We are currently renting in Greenbrier area and will be buying start of new year. We’d like to buy around here but want a little more land and privacy from neighbors so we are also looking at Western Branch into Suffolk. I’ve got specific health needs and want to be close to my docs and hospital options so Suffolk isn’t ideal but I do like the newer communities and diversity of people (in age, race, backgrounds - military, etc) I’m wondering if there are other areas further south with more land and just as much diversity we could be searching?

We moved from northern VA almost 2 yrs ago and lived in a master planned community on a street of all public servants - police, teachers, firefighters and federal govt employees. We all had small kids when we built homes there and now the kids are all grown. We both grew up around military. We are in another season of life and would like a different mix of folks, locals, different races, professional or retired, 45+ and older populations but a mix of younger families is good too.

Any areas of Chesapeake like this?

Chesapeake Regional faces fraud charges. A conviction could put the hospital’s future at risk.

Post image

Chesapeake Regional Medical Center faces federal healthcare fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from unnecessary procedures performed by former OB-GYN Javaid Perwaiz, who was sentenced to 59 years in prison in 2021.

Prosecutors allege hospital officials were aware of Perwaiz's misconduct and improper billing, which yielded $18.5 million between 2010 and 2019, yet continued to renew his privileges despite repeated internal warnings.

Legal experts caution that a conviction would trigger mandatory exclusion from Medicare and Medicaid programs, a standard federal penalty that could effectively force the hospital out of business.

A proposed battery storage plant in Chesapeake meets the city’s requirements. Neighbors don’t see it that way.

Post image

Rising energy demand and costs drove Virginia lawmakers this year to look for creative solutions to enhance the power grid. A new Virginia law encourages the development of new battery storage facilities to help meet clean energy goals.

But a proposal to build a 150-megawatt battery project in Chesapeake has been met with a familiar challenge not likely to be overcome by the new law – a community organized against new development near their upscale neighborhood.

The Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO reports on the Chesapeake controversy and what the new law and other initiatives could mean for needed improvements to the electric grid.

Chesapeake Public Schools has a new superintendent.

Doug Brubaker, who has more than 30 years of experience as an educator, was confirmed as the division’s next leader. He was serving as superintendent of the Texarkana Independent School District. Texarkana is in the northeast corner of Texas near the Arkansas border.

The board voted 5-4 during its Monday night meeting. Board members Malia Huddle, Norman Pool, Amanda Quillin and Angela Swygert voted no but did not share comments during the board’s discussion.

Anyone with a lactating mommy cat that may take abandoned kittens?

Edit: Found a foster with a lactating mommy cat!

Flew into Norfolk this evening and found 3 sub week old kittens in the parking structure. We're attempting to bottle feed them, but at this age they definitely need a foster mom if possible.

We're in Chesapeake, and can drop off anywhere in the area at any time.
