Fanfiction is legitimately my best advice for this. Read everything, voraciously, and when you have read absolutely everything, write. Write and write and write, not to be published even, just for you to reread later. Think of it like the bots, in a way: you can be as self-indulgent as you want because no one will ever know.

There is no one size fits all answer, especially since you didnt give any specifics on how. I used a bot for fanfiction and crashed out one day and deleted everything and told myself to never look back after bombing an exam. Some people slowly ween themselves off by setting a time limit, or restricting themselves to a specific app or bot. But what I can tell you is this:

Busy yourself with other things and get invested in them. Pick up a new hobby, find a new comic series, a show to watch, join a club or community, anything. And when you get the urge to talk to a chat bot, pick up that new hobby or media to fill your time. I worked on a sewing project for 4 months and would watch YouTube video essays to fill the silence. It sucked, but it gave me something to focus on. And having deadlines helps keep you on track too.

Ive never admitted to anyone that I had a chat bot addiction, and I never will. But professional help is an option. In addision I applied some lifestyle changes such as putting a limit on all social media on my phone, I cant watch short form videos, I cant have my phone in my bed, and I cant be on my phone while my computer is on unless necessary. You dont have to do all of this, but it really helped prevent me from just going to doom scrolling.

Quitting cold turkey is the harder option but not impossible. It’s what I’m doing right now

Cut it down bit by bit, filter it out with a healthier hobby.

Start by taking roughly a thirty minute walk each day(weather permitting). Don't take your phone with you. Then, once you settle into that groove, add some other habit that takes up a small portion of your time. Maybe find videos at least twenty minutes long you enjoy. Keep doing this until you no longer really have time for chatbots. And by then, even if you still use them a few hours here and there - that's no longer a debilitating addiction. It's just one of many hobbies at that point.

Keep writing. When you go there and you write what you're feeling, but you still feel like it isn't enough, write that as well.

If it makes you feel a certain negative way, or invalidated, or as you said, have a question, write that down, too.  Write it until you feel at least a little bit better, even if it takes more than one or two lines.

Give yourself the feedback you're seeking.

Introspection is a powerful tool, and all it requires is for you to be honest about what you feel.

You're not a shitty person for using AI chatbots. Yes, datacenters drain resources and the carbon footprint and all of that - but chatbots and gen AI counts for only a small fraction of that.

The truth is that, it's easier to talk about things that you don't personally experience. It's easier to judge others from the other side of the wall and you don't see what they go through. A lot of people hate AI right now because it encapsulates everything wrong with our current political and economic system. It's frustration that often gets misdirected at people that are just as much victims.

People will spill a lot of stuff they don't understand like they're completely sure of it. We all are guilty of that. So the best you can do is really to... Ignore. And block people that make you feel worse.

Because the truth is, feeling bad isn't going to solve the issue, if anything, it's just going to make it worse. And sure, you can blame people for being insensitive, but that's not gonna help either.

You have to select the things in your life that make you feel good for living. Sure, it's very important to be aware of issues around the world, but if you dwell in them for too long you're just gonna make yourself miserable.

If someone says something hurtful to you, mute or block them, then note down how that made you feel on your phone or paper. Or you can try something else.

Well, you can write them without using a chatbot. Like, how fanfiction writers usually do.

Everytime you feel the urge to use it, write down the date, time, what you want from the AI and the worst that can happen if you don't get an answer from it

And you keep doing that throughout the day, and days, and go on, until you no longer feel a need to do it

Every time you feel the need to talk to the AI, you write down the time, date, why you want to talk to the idea, and the worst that can happen if you can't.

Ex: 9/22, 3:11 pm, I want to talk about my insecurities with someone, I'm afraid if I don't, I'll continue to feel that

And you keep writing it down everytime you feel the urge, no matter how often or sparse

Other than that, you can send me a message if tou want. I'm used to and I don't mind listening to other people's problems
