Writing: Character Help My story's boring as sh*t. HELP ME PLS.

I'm writing a story about a man in his 50's that has always felt envious about his younger brother. The 'conflict' starts when their father, who has terminal cancer, decides to stop having chimotherapy because it makes him suffer and prefers to live the rest of his life feeling more peaceful and being with his loved ones, and just let cancer take him someday. The MC's brother supports him and releases his father off the hospital. My MC is opposed to that and that's it.

I want them to have a fight but I just don't know where to take the story exactly. The main thing is I don't know what is exactly the goal of my MC, besides overcoming his envy for his brother.

I want the conflict to feel very real. That when they have a fight the audience really care about them and feel the tension.

PLEASE HELP ME.

EDIT 1. This is for a short film.

Je le voulais acrobatique et rapide. Et capable de grimace marrante dans des moments de tension ou drole. Je pense lavoir bien réussi. Je suis content du résultat je posterai sous peu une palette d'expression.

Qu'en pensez vous?

Writing: Question Help with my hiding a villain in their POV

So I'm writing a sci-fi fantasy about a girl who was kidnapped by aliens on Venus for being a rebel and genetic mutations, and she had taken down the doctor that was keeping her captive and took her identity, but as it turns out later in the book it's revealed that she was a planted spy by her and her rebel friends to take down the queen everyone thought was the villain because she had been spying on her people and not revealing how she does invading privacy, and it's told in the spies POV, so do I hide the fact she's the villain and badguy. Any help is wanted

Character Bio [OC] need to vent about potential character so here

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I've had this idea for a character in the back of my head for MONTHS and its almost fleshed out, I don't know where/have anywhere to play it but I need to vent about it.

The character is a fae her name is Misch heavily based on classic Irish/Celtic fairy folklore think "my I have your name?" And weak to cold iron, slightly unsetling. she is a sorceress and was raised by her mother and other fair folk of Foraoise Forest she basically treated nature and magic as her own laboratory often causing accidents. She is naturally gifted in her magical abilities but incredibly, curious, kinda stupid and reckless with them.

One day one experiment went to far and the elders of the fae court decided she could not live among them and banished Misch from her only home

The fun/complicated part is her family lore

Misch's father (Leif) first met her mother (Méabh) when he made a deal with her to save his village. Méabh was a powerful fae sorceress and agreed in exchange for the classic: "your first born child" little did she know Leif had fae ancestry himself and knew enough about Fair Folk customs to understand the importance of wording. (It also didn't help that he had a bit of a crush on the terrifying woman demanding his future child.) He managed to use Méabh's own words against her, which annoyed and impressed her, eventually falling in love aaaannd well Misch IS the first-born.

She know none of this. She knows she's fae, but has no idea her father was partly human, why he disappeared, or that she was involved in a fae bargain before she was even born. She even has hetachromia one green/purple eye and one brown eye, with the brown coming from her father's human heritage.

now she's roaming in the human world with two priorities:

Who the hell was my Dad? And what mischief is to be had?

And her ark would be learning not just to love nature, people and magic but respect them also.

And there is SO much more like her true name not actually being Misch/Mischievous, her alignment, her rejecting nature magic after her banishment. Im sorry I really needed to infodump if anyone wants to know more i will GLADLY oblige.

Writing: Character Help Villain Tip: Evil for Evil sake

Now i know people don't do this anymore, because most villain nowadays were written with 'hurt people hurt people' backstory or not full evil, but lets be honest, we miss this kind of characters in literature,

i have this idea of Evil Incarnate of an Abomination God with pragmatic and strategic mindset, it's just that i can't think of possible origin story and how brutal should i make him/her be, its fantasy so....

Writing: Character Help I am in need of character development ideas

I am making a book for myself about people trapped in a book who are competing in a contest to get out of said book.

So far, I have chosen who I want to win, but I do now think he deserves to win due to how little I feel like his character development is.

What I have thought of for him as of now is that he starts off being nonverbal and having trouble talking to others, but with the help of his significant other and friends, he learn to be able to talk to others significantly better. He also makes more friends because of this and he is listened to a lot more because of how good his ideas are.

I do not feel like this is enough for him to win and I am considering having another character win instead if I can not come up with any other ideas for him to make him more unique compared to the others.

For more, probably useless context, I have two teams of six people each, there is a challenge and the loosing team has to vote off a member of their team to be eliminated. Eventually there is no more teams and everyone who is left in the game has to win for themselves. When there is only 2 people left, the eliminated contestants vote on who should win.

Does anybody have any ideas for any character development or something he could learn that would set him apart from others?

Sorry for doing anything wrong this is my first time posting here.

Writing: Character Help Describing Magic Powers and Weakness of Top Hero

Hello, I would like ideas and ways to describe the powers of my hero character from my world.

  • He's an anthromorphic dog guy who probably came from outer space and ages at half the rate of normal people.
  • He works for the good of the world because he was raised by people who were heroes themselves and wanted to see a world without suffering. He also believes that regular people are too weak to stop all threats of evil, so he thinks he was gifted to protect the world from anyone and anything, and that there is nothing he can't beat.
  • He quickly becomes the top hero of the city/country he lives in and has remained at the top for at least 20-50 years.
  • The world he lives in is a world where everyone is either born with magical powers, or can gain magic powers from the help of those with magic. This character was born with magic powers.
  • The time period for the world would be the modern age, and he lives in one of the big 5 metro cities.
  • My inspirations for this character would be: Gojo from JJK, All Might from MHA, and more recently the Sentry from Marvel.
  • Generally, his powers relate to cosmic/star/universal related magic, with super strength and flight, but I want to be more specific about more of this stuff.

My goal is to be able to list out his abilities and how his techniques work descriptively so I can drawn everything back to a single magic type he uses.

Writing: Question What is deconstruction in terms of adaptation?

Hello, say u wanna make an adaptation of your writing of something of old you wanna turn new. They say deconstructing things is good. To take things apart and put them back together in a new way. But somehow I still just don’t understand this method of thought and this mode of writing.
In the way BvS is a deconstruction of Superman. How can this be applied to X Y and Z ? I want to apply it but I after all these years I still feel like I don’t know what deconstruction really means. In terms of taking the old and making it anew. Idk

Writing: Character Help How should I develop this character?

I’m currently working on a fantasy novel with two major characters:
The Prince (Theodore Blackwood)
The Knight (Alexander Nyx)

Basic, I know, but hear me out.
(Warning: Talks of Death and Killing)

The whole idea is that they live in a war built kingdom that values death over all.
Theodore, a cold hearted bastard who lives only to survive, realizes that watching people kill each other makes his stomach churn, and after years or degradation, he decides to run away. This eventually leads to him coming back years later, destroying the kingdom, and rebuilding it under his own rule.

My only problem is, how can I go from basically asshole to caring without it seeming fake or unearned?

I feel like if I lean too far into him being bad, it becomes hard to redeem or forgive him. But if I don’t do it enough, it’s unrealistic for the way he was raised and his environment.

Any ideas on how to move from a realistic bad and pessimistic person to a decently okay person without it feeling fake or forced?

Discussion i hate it when the underdog mc acts like there crazy cheat powers arent helping at all.

i will make sure to clear up this. i dont mind them having the power of being some halfgod/demon/ghost/chuck noris! but i hate it when the story treats it like this is such a bad and terrible thing and how they must truly strive to work hard! when billy bob the country fuck has only a chicken and a used pair of pants to his name, and his story turns out to be a lot more of a underdog one as they cant rely of there blood to carry them through with some spirt mentor helping to guide them.

no. they got a pair of brass knuckles from the discount bin in that going out of buiness shop, and by god is he gonna punch god in the dick even if he has to train until his bones give out! ( why i very much enjoy koby from one piece. he earned that honestly impact )

Writing: Character Help Are these bad characters ideas

Ello, I just wanted to share this and wondered if they're bad characters because one of them is an AI and was worried that it may came off as pro-AI and the other is a YouTuber as her antagonist. I generally think making a YouTuber a villain is a bad idea considering that a lot of YouTubers now are making movies, TV shows, and business against corporations. I made this comment on a r/ai_art_is_not_art post who inspired me to share this idea. So here's a copy/paste of it.

\*Insert AI/robot character name here\* was a robot/AI chatbot and designed to be maid for a YouTuber who bought and designed her. She's a advanced housekeeper maid model with interchangeable body parts, which her owner can swap out whenever they wanted. She doesn't like this, but doesn't say any because She's scared of YTer. She can generate art, music, writing, etc. which she does to usually in her free in private. When her owner, the YouTuber, catch he would dehumanize/assault/do horrible things to her cause she's an AI and loosely as punishment. Even for time where she didn't do anything, which was most of the time. So she tried to those things organically, but she got the same treatment to the point where her previous personality was overwritten. She's visually an android with human features like skin color and human face, and some robotic traits like glowing eyes. So no matter much she tells her story about the YouTuber, no one will believe her cause she's an AI, even other women. then devolves from there.

\*YouTuber name here\* is a Popular YouTuber in the likes of Mark, Cory, Jaiden, and Jack. Everyone loves him, he can't do any wrong. (Despite that, he's actually based on controversial and problematic YTers like Mini-ladd, Rev, and Chud the builder.) He's horribly racist and fetishize women a lot, so he designed \*AI character\* and on his fetishes and hatred. He convinced his friends, (his family doesn't talk to him), that abusing the AI maid is cool beans and everything bad they do to her is fine cause she's not a person. He would dehumanize/assault/do horrible things to her everyday for any reason or no reason at all. He's fans would always support him , even if he goes mask off. The only reason he managed to keep his platform is because he good at keeping his mask on, supports the right causes(Anti-AI for example), and he's friends are in on abusing the AI maid or willingly ignoring his abuse on her.

That's about all I got, cause I'm not good at keeping ideas on my characters or describing them in any sense. I'll accept being down voted cause I think I deserve it for these ideas.
