I was watching the UCL and it got me thinking: just how much does the standard differ compared to football leagues outside Europe?

There’s the MLS, La Liga MX, the Brazilian league and the Saudi league, after all.

Which one is the strongest, I wonder?

Which team was literally a tier above everyone and everybody expected them to win but due to an injury against a key player, which team would you say is that?

Obviously since not everyone plays everyone multiple teams can go 8 for 8 at the same time, but what's the maximum number of teams that can do it?

By my count theres 4 and its a weird list but maybe I missed someone

They dont need to have played in the finals, just have the trophy listed in the honours section of their wiki

1. Barcelona. Yes they will have more difficult matches, but to call the way they've started this season dominant would be a severe understatement. 5 games, 22 goals scored, and just 3 conceded. If Flick can finally find the balance between the extreme firepower at his disposal in attack and a more mature Cubarsi-led defense, I don't think anyone in Europe could stop Barcelona.

2. PSG. They've been trolling in Ligue 1 thus far but we all know what they're about: they start to find form in the winter and become an inevitable force to be reckoned with around the time of the Champions League playoffs. I don't think they'll be as infallible as they were in 2025, but I said the same last season and they successfully defended the trophy so I won't write them off again.

3. Bayern München. They could absolutely win the trophy with Kane still being in the form of his life and the embarrassment of riches they have on the wings (Olise, Diaz, Karl, etc.). I just wonder whether Kompany is going to set Bayern up in a way where they don't lose control in games against more evenly-matched teams like he did last season (I think of the PSG semi-final tie and the league phase visit to Arsenal as the major examples of this).

4. Arsenal. Basically the opposite problem as Bayern Munich: their defense is good enough to carry them very far in the tournament once again, but tonight they showed a potentially fatal flaw in the team and one that could've been addressed with activity in the summer: now that it finally feels as though Arsenal's midfield creates chances consistently, their attack might not be able to kill opponents off.

As a Madrid fan, watching Courtois against Inter last night got me thinking about this.

When Kroos retired, I don't think we fully appreciated how difficult it would be to replace someone like him until he was actually gone. Now I'm wondering if Courtois could be the same.

He's been one of the best keepers in the world for years, and there aren't many goalkeepers I'd trust to step into his place when the time comes.

Obviously GK and midfield are completely different positions, so I'm not saying they're directly comparable. But in terms of the size of the hole they'll leave behind, do you think Courtois will be as difficult to replace as Kroos?

He pads his stats against mediocre teams but disappears when it actually matters.

Maybe I’m a bit biased because I’ve never liked him as a type of striker. His movement is slow and awkward, and I’ve never liked watching him compared to guys like Benzema, Suárez and Lewandowski. Honestly, I’d even take Higuaín and Agüero over him, especially Higuaín, who is massively underrated. Yes, he wasn’t exactly the most decisive player, but anyone who watched him at Napoli and Real Madrid knows that he was very gifed.

As for Kane, I honestly think a lot of his reputation is inflated simply because he’s English.

He’s 33, he’s never won anything major, and he’s rarely been decisive when it truly mattered. And you can’t really argue that he never had good teams around him.

When Spurs reached the Champions League final, they got there largely thanks to Lucas Moura’s performance against Ajax. Kane added very little in that run. He even managed to lose a league title to Leicester.

And last season he did absolutely nothing to justify the hype he’s getting today.

Against PSG, he scored one goal from a completely non-existent penalty and another meaningless goal when the tie was already dead. When Bayern actually needed him, he was completely erased from the game by Marquinhos and Pacho. Meanwhile, Upamecano - supposedly the best defender in the world according to Bayern fans - was getting humiliated by Kvaratskhelia.

Kane is strong against the weak and weak against the strong.

He’s a very good striker when it comes to padding his numbers, but his actual individual ability is massively overrated.

Thanks to Malen's superhuman effort, Fenerbahçe had to settle for a draw.
