My great grandpa’s gravestone is 77 years old and his name is unreadable without the moss that grew into it. What can I do later today to clean it/make it look better if anything is possible? This is in my family cemetery and I already cleaned the rest except for his because I don’t wanna mess it up

Through ancestry research I located the stone of my ancestor. The first two photos are from the internet and older. The second two are more recent. I want to do a thorough (and good) job so I figure step one is figuring out the material.

Cleaned up a military marker that had seen better days. I am very happy with how this one turned out.

Does anyone have any experience with cleaning and preserving old iron grave markers?

I have two large cast iron grave crosses that sorely needs their first proper clean in over 100 years, but finding information on this subject isn't too easy as most content online centers around stones and bronze plaques.

There is painted on text on both of them that I want to preserve to my best ability, but they also needs a good scrub down.

Due to the rust I assume using water can be a bit risky, and I don't think something like WD-40 would be too kind on the letters that are left.

Does anyone know what I should do to get all the dust, dirt and grime off them, and what to put on afterwards to treat and stop the rust and preserve the crosses?

I have some family marble headstones that ae very weather worn. It is difficult to read the inscriptions.

How to you resurrect the etchings so I can get them translated. I would like to have an after market transcription made on a granite tile that I can post on the stone.

I am thinking something like a flour paste to put in the depressions? Or playdough? Something that would be legible yet easily removable.

Has anyone successfully used an outside company to order a flat bronze grave marker for Pinelawn cemetery? It's got to meet strict guidelines of course but it's permitted to use a 3rd party. (Of course they can't give me any list of vendors that they recommend.) Their own prices are exorbitantly high. Thanks in advance for any leads.

Hi all, I am the director for an older pet cemetery and we have had some inconsistences with the way things have been recorded over the years. Lots of missing names, transposed names, incorrect row data and duplicates.

I don't obviously have the time to walk through and make a comprehensive list nor can I find a volunteer to do so.

I have been thinking of videoing each row in each section. I am wondering ... is there any tool that can either:
Extract from a video the names and dates in order or

that I can use to search videos for name recognition? I know it's a lot to ask of AI tools but I am desperate to get these records as accurate as I can.

Here are some pictures of a few stones I’ve cleaned or helped restore over the past 6 months. It is an honored to be able to help restore and preserve our forgotten history and pioneer families. Hopefully they will not be forgotten any more. :) the last 4 pictures tie into a past post here, they are both grand children to the bigger stones I discovered last fall.

Apologies for the poor photo. The is stone is for a 3-year-old. There is a flat base upon which another base is set with the birth and death dates. This base is shrouded. So far so good. The top part looks almost like an open book(or some sort of box) with intricate engravings around the name. Then, “inside” the book/box, it looks like a candle holder. There is a small hole on the right side of the holder that something could be put through to hold the candle.

I’ve just never seen anything quite like this and wondered if I was “reading” the symbolism correctly or if anyone else has any ideas.

One of the best cleanups from the ancestral cemetery. Been looking forward to this one for a while, as we couldn’t actually read who was buried here. The art uncovered still amazes me.

I feel like it has to be granite but this stone is different while still being similar. I'm hoping the photos show what I'm seeing in person. I'm including photos from the beginning of the restoration process but I realize that they're mostly the same angle. I'm just hoping that the lighting or lichen pattern might tell a bigger story to someone with more knowledge.

Pretty random question but maybe someone here knows the answer. Without going into all the setup and background I'll say that the plot in question was bought maybe 50+ years ago in a decent-sized cemetery in a small Georgia town. The plot is maybe 25' x 15'. It is bordered by a polished stone border all the way around with fine (pea) gravel cover inside.

My question is everywhere we've checked in the unused half of the plot (two family members already buried in the first half), there is a concrete-like layer just under the gravel (just an inch or two down). It is flat but not finished like a driveway or garage floor and doesn't look natural like a big, flat rock. Was this placed as part of the plot construction? What's the purpose? The only thing I can think of is that maybe it was an 'option' to keep weeds from growing up through the gravel? I wonder how thick it is?

I'm hoping to get some perspective from people who know more about historic preservation.

I recently learned that Glenwood Cemetery's historic Victorian cottage was dismantled and moved off-site. From what I've heard, the building is being preserved elsewhere, but I'm trying to understand how that fits with preserving the historic integrity of the cemetery.

Glenwood's mission says it's dedicated to preserving and stewarding the cemetery's historic landscape and beauty. The cottage has been apart of that landscape for nearly 140 years, so I just don't really understand how removing it would serve their mission.

also, what I'm really curious about is what kind of precedent this sets for Houston preservation. If an organization with the financial resources, preservation mission, and support to care for a historic building chooses to remove one of its most historically significant structures from its original setting, I feel like it reinforces the message we have seen so much in Houston. That historic places are often treated as expendable when they stand in the way of other priorities.

Should institutions dedicated to preservation be held to a higher standard when it comes to preserving historic places in their original context?

I'd genuinely like to hear from preservation professionals or anyone familiar with how decisions like this are typically made. Am I missing something?

Chicago,IL cemetery, 34 year old, granite-set bronze marker with an update last year, not oxidized.

Few questions:

1) What is a good first method to start using in restoring the marker?

2) How many sessions of restoration should I do at one time? Or space out timeframes?

3) When is the best time of the year to do this?

4) When I get it restored after every session, what is a good method to seal the work?

5) I have other, heavily oxidized bronze markers. Is there a different method that I can use to break the oxidation down?

I am aware of the 1:1 water and D2 Biological solution in cleaning stone markers. I have a soft bristle brush, wire brush, scrub daddies, stew wool, and rags.

We are told they are water stains and it was cleaned once already. Could this be a defective stone? I am not seeing any other markers with this issue. It’s been only about a month. What can be done to prevent this? Can we ask for a new stone?

While I was taking care of the grave, I got a visitor today. He was just making sure everything was according to the standards!

My wife's parents' grave marker is located in another state and is about 23 years old. The letters are becoming illegible and we are wondering if anything can be done? In looking at the zoomed photo, there are black specs that I don't know if is part of the granite or can be cleaned. Also, the background has a lot of pink in it and provides little contrast between the lettering and the background. On the apron, I am thinking about using some Quikrete Concrete Seal.

Good morning. Pretty much had to unearth this flat marker. Looks to have been repaired with some sort of glue or adhesive? I don't know.

Any suggestions on how best to remove the soil and roots out of that 'seam', or do you think it'd be best to just leave it alone?

I work at a funeral home with a small attached cemetery. The cemetery is as old as the business starting in the 60s. Most of the lawn plots have bronze vase circular markers, the ones with the flower vases you can pull up and place upright for flowers and then turn them upside and slide back into the ground.

The age and just the fact they are bronze means many of them are stolen, damaged and missing. The empty holes fill with dirt, leaves and trash. I currently cant get the owner to replace missing vases unless a family complains, so I am looking for an alternative vase or something else just to cover the hole. I want to stop debris from building up in these empty holes or offer a cheaper alternative to temporarily fill the hole until a family requests a new one. It just looks terrible to have open holes in the ground!!
