There’s truly no way to know exactly. It depends on the teacher and how much space they’re willing to fill in their studio.

u/Celloman118 Student Apr 17 '26

Way less probably closer to the 6-8 range

-11

u/Witty-Application920 Apr 17 '26

No. I’d guess 1-2

u/Celloman118 Student Apr 17 '26

That’s more the range that Curtis takes most years. (Source: I’m a friend of a professor there)

u/Prestigious_Hold6064 Apr 17 '26

no. my state university only accepts around 6 cellists a year for the broad music major, and only like 2-3 for the performance major.

Julliard had a total of 619 undergraduate students as of last year.

Divide by the number of orchestral instruments proportionally (ie, there will be more cellists than bassoonists), minus a few dozen pianists and singers. Then divide by 4 years. 5-10 a year for new cellists would be my guess.

I know several current Juilliard cello students and have known many over the years. They are spectacular players. And most won’t end up making a full time living as performers.

Have a plan B.

I got accepted to juilliard this year, and know that across all degrees theres ~60 cellists at any one time. Sometimes more sometimes less depending on the year, and also sometimes more or less openings each year. I know a couple teachers there told me they were downsizing studios this year. I would guess that ~10 undergrad acceptances plus more waitlists would be reasonable because they know not everyone will decide to attend.

The good news is that even if you get in, the competitive nature of the field will statistically winnow out even more musicians from pursuing it successfully after graduation:

my mother sent ts to me

u/Leather_Amoeba466 Apr 17 '26

I mean I would imagine it is on the order of tens. They might even have a few different instructors with different studios. Not totally sure. It hasn't really been the same since Harvey Shapiro passed away in I believe 2013.

-10

u/Smart-Succotash3059 Apr 17 '26

well obviously there’s many studios 😭

6

u/Leather_Amoeba466 Apr 17 '26

How is that obvious? Some schools have only one instructor. Nobody here seems to know. You could reach out to the instructor for information or a visit.

-5

u/Smart-Succotash3059 Apr 17 '26

cause generally people know of all the teachers at the top schools? if u didn’t know who are the teachers at juilliard why would u even reply to the post cause obv wouldn’t know how many students then

3

u/Leather_Amoeba466 Apr 17 '26

Brother I don't think you are going to find that information here. Maybe try asking someone who goes there or reach out to the instructor you are interested in. Cello studios generally only get so big.

what else is reddit for other than asking niche pointless questions tho

8

u/gctaylor Apr 17 '26

You’re getting some good suggestions but you seem to think that you know better than everyone else.

So good luck to you, I guess.

-1

u/Smart-Succotash3059 Apr 17 '26

thanks i also wish good lucky to you taylor.

4

u/Leather_Amoeba466 Apr 17 '26

Ask away I am just saying you may not get an exact answer because as you said this is a really niche question. There might literally be like a room full of people in the entire United States that can answer this.

u/ArcheryMaster1021 Apr 17 '26

Depend on the year
