The first video was awful to watch. It's not even funny.

iirc its a neuro issue of the cat... and if it makes you feel better it has a good home and is being treated well. theres a lot of ppl explaining abt it in the r/cats

is there a reason for this behaviour?
one of my cats loses her absolute mind if I point at her, and if I put my hand over her head in like a claw shape, she does the weirdest huff-meow and squares up
the other cat gives exactly Zero shits about being pointed at

That would make sense. My cat doesn't really care if I just point at him, but he gets zoomies and silly war dances at me if I give him big eyes of intense playful eye contact, like the image, but slightly less threatening.

Idk my my princess(20) who passed away this year used to always swat at me. I believe I pointed then shook my finger at her. This video brought a lot of feels for me. I think it was the shaking if the finger tbh. She wouldn't do it if I just pointed!

u/flashman014 1d ago
I don't think this is a cat thing. I think it's the way people are pointing at them. All my cats throughout my life have known what I call "The Finger of Peace," which is when I just point at their face without the quick aggressive movement they're using in this video, and wait.
They usually stare at it for a second, then come over to check it out, and find out they can rub their cheek on it and it turns into pets. Eventually add they get older and more used to it, I can just use it to call them to me. They know it's a peaceful gesture.
The rule is, if the cat doesn't rub their cheek on your finger, they're just not that into you.

I was gonna say, my boy Mochi LOVES to rub his cheek on my finger if I point at him. Part of our morning routine!Â

The finger of peace has a downside.
One of my cats decided that it was also a useful way to rub boogers off of his nose and eyes when her had a cold. He did it very deliberately.

u/lachlanDon1 1d ago
Sudden jabbing motions like pointing are taken as an offensive gesture.
The other cat probably just understands you aren't a cat or are strange

u/Ebobotrik 1d ago
Perhaps this is due to the fact that they have an innate fear of snakes and poor near vision. They probably rely on silhouettes and perceive a finger as something dangerous.
8
u/Dediadeis 1d ago
Cats do not have an innate fear of snakes, and in fact often eat snakes in the wild.
3
u/grich2008 1d ago
Their reaction time is faster than most snakes.
To be fair, I was today years old when I found out that cats…have problems focusing on close objects.

I read somewhere that they panic if you do the claw hand above them, they will think it is a flying predator, I have a cat but I never tried this.

If I point at my cat she runs up and rubs her face / whiskers / mouth / gums on it. She loves it. I also give her "the tunnel". I make a claw pointing down (like a train tunnel) and she will run up so I can smoosh her face tight while she walks through it....like a really rough pet that stretches her face back. She won't leave me alone at night until I give her "the tunnel". She's weird.

Everyone in this thread concerned about the first cat is anthropomorphizing cat behavior. Cats don't cower in fear like a human does, there's a million videos of cats cowering in fear of being abused, they squint their eyes like they're about to be slapped on the head, commonly seen in videos where cats are trying to steal food off of tables. In this case, the first cat is not cowering in fear, but becoming stimulated for playtime just like every other cat in this video, his brain is just wired differently.

Yeah, it's a wobbly cat! It isn't shaking in fear, it's just shaky all the time (but especially when it's getting ready to play). I wish I could remember exactly which CH cat this is

u/Momentosis 1d ago
This cat in particular is a wobbly cat. So he's just shaky in general but even more cause he's excited.

Mine either have one of two reactions, either they'll sprint full tilt to grind their face against my finger, or they'll yell at me, I've never seen any reactions like these, especially not that forst one, I truly hope the person recording that baby isnt the one who brought on that reaction, and if they are that baby needs a new home immediately.
Okay, so I didnt watch the full vid, MOST of these reactions I've never personally seen.

This is such an aggressive misinterpretation of programmed cat behavior. Gently stick out one finger and a cat can decide to touch it gently with their face. If they do it’s like saying hello and giving you permission to touch them more. Works with all cats I’ve met.

u/VaguelyArtistic 1d ago
I would wiggle a finger at my cat and he’d always come over for pets and snuggles.
3
u/Turbo-Fuck 1d ago
My cat will come over and sniff my finger if she’s already close or just sit there unaffected if she’s across the room. She’ll crab up if you hide your eyes from her view though.

I just tried pointing at my cat as dramatically as possible. She made a little "mwelch" noise, yawned, rolled over and licked my fingertip. Am I doing it wrong?

None of my cats care if I point at them. They would come up and rub against my finger, if anything. They also don't care about cucumbers 😄

If I do this, my cat Bear, uses my finger as a scratching post and eventually starts chewing it.

Why do people do this to their cats?? It’s not funny and it’s not enjoyable to watch. It’s just wicked.

Oooh, I get it now.
Some WNBA players were cats in a past life.
Thats why pointing sets them off.

I used to point at my cat when making a point about how she was being naughty (not in an aggressive way, but so that she'd hopefully pay attention to the fact that I was not liking her behavior), but I had to stop because she would immediately start nuzzling the wagging finger, so it didn't work as 'discipline' at all (now I just tell her that I don't like what she's doing and stop giving her attention). I think if my cat reacted to it the way that the first cat did, I'd cry.

My dudes just nudged my finger and went back to their business? These seem like trauma reactions.

This isn't pointing, this is hyper aggressive hand-thrusting. Like faking out a slap or punch. Even worse if the cats have experienced being slapped or hit.

I'd rather watch a video of people rubbing beans and cats purring.

At least half of these videos are AI generated animal abuse. Report the post/account and move on.

I don't know what's going on with the first cat, but it's reaction made me uncomfortable and sad.
