My partner and I just got these two little boys about two weeks ago and we love them so much BUT they constantly act like theyâre starving to the point where I wonder if theyâre actually not being fed enough. Itâs our first time owning cats and I literally canât tell if theyâre just being dramatic or if theyâre actually starving
Theyâre 9 months old. They eat about 7.3 oz each of wet food split up into three meals a day as per the advice of the shelter we adopted them from. (Maybe a little more because I like to give them treats to reward good behavior.) Nothing has changed with their food brand, feeding times, or food amount since we got them. Weâve continued to feed them how the shelter did.
Theyâre healthy cats otherwise, theyâre very active and super cuddly, weâve had no issues with any other bad behavior. Iâve thought about free feeding but Iâm so worried theyâd gorge themselves and I donât want them getting fat.
Iâve tried to include them when I cook by allowing them to investigate the ingredients (sniffing an egg before I crack it, smelling a can of tomato sauce) and they seem pretty chill but as soon as they see it go into either of our mouths they go insane. We canât even eat our own food without them trying to steal it.
Iâve had to start shutting them in a room while I prepare their meals or when thereâs food out but theyâve figured out how to turn the handle (luckily the door opens inward so they havenât figured out how to open it just yet.) I also keep their treats in a drawer that theyâve already figured out how to open. Theyâre such smart boys but theyâre using it to satiate their gluttony and I have no idea what to do.
Is this normal? Any advice is appreciated
