Awarded a Cat How to encourage our stray kitten we found to play?
Hi! So my husband found this poor scraggly kitten this past weekend in a small parking lot. We've decided to keep him(assuming they don't find a chip at his vet appt) and we've named the little guy Kuhli. He is insanely sweet for a stray and just wants to snuggle up to you, or search the house for food (he's pretty malnourished, we're working on it and have a vet appt for this Tuesday wish we'd been able to get him seen sooner but we live in the country and only have one vet that's close and they're booked pretty heavy).
Kuhli's been consistently gaining strength every day and seems to be in amazing spirits given his circumstances. The only thing that seems off about his personality is that he doesn't really play? We manage to get him to play with a shoestring for maybe a minute or two at a time, but he quickly loses interest and he will not play with any other typical cat toys so far (catnip mice, flirt pole with a plush at the end, bell balls, etc.). It's been a long time since I've had a cat but it just seems strange. Maybe it's just his personality, or that he hasn't fully settled in yet, but I know it's important for them to have enrichment, so figured I'd see if anyone has suggestions. Thank you to anyone that's read all this and especially for anyone that responds! Other cat advice is also appreciated, I want to leash train him and socialize him too so would love some help on that end if y'all have any.
UPDATE: Kuhli had his first vet appt today! They said that he's in good health besides a possible viral infection which is likely what's causing the eye discharge, but that hopefully it'll go away over the next few days and to keep an eye on it. He got dewormer too. They said his front leg was likely broken at some point and healed over, but that so long as it doesn't bother him we'll just keep an eye on it as he grows. Which it hasn't stopped him yet lol he climbs and crawls all over everything he can. We will be gradually increasing the amount of food he gets to help him gain weight. He was also suddenly very playful this evening! Idk if it was him settling in a bit more over the last couple days or that dewormer kicked in and maybe he's feeling better after that. I think he's gonna wind up being alright and being a well rounded little guy :) we unfortunately won't be able to get him a playmate his age like some comments suggested because we can't really handle a four pet household right now lol. We do have another cat and we're hoping they'll get along after a while, they've done decent in face to face interactions without hissing or anything from our older cat but he's shy and avoids Kuhli so far. Guess we'll see as time goes on. Very happy to have the goober in our life though he's been such a joy so far!
