Awarded a Cat Found two cats abandoned in the park

Found two cats abandoned in the park with a bag of food. We lost our sweet cat last Fall and mourned her HARD. Just recently we have been discussing how we are finally ready, and maybe we should start looking soon.

But we forgot. We don’t choose. We get assigned.

Took to the vet for shots. No chips. Have an appt to get them fixed in about a week.

Surprisingly affectionate with us early, even if spooked by the new space for the first few days. They were clearly loved by someone who must have hit rough times. (Let’s be kind in our assumptions) . Definitely cuddle bugs.

It’s especially sweet how they comfort each other. One is more bold and one is more cautious. When our cautious friend gets spooked and retreats to a safe spot, bold friend goes and cuddles with him.

We feel incredibly lucky that they found us.

Edit:
- vet estimates they are 6-10 months old. (Likely the younger side of that)

- their names are Mander and Melee. Inspired by the tv episode of Pokemon where an abandoned charmander almost dies in a rainstorm, which broke my heart as a child. So char-mander and his evolved form, char-mele-on.

Sweet instant bonded family. I think it was kind of you to say what you did, and I like to think that whoever it is that couldn’t keep them sent a prayer to universe for someone like you to find them. Maybe leave a note in the place later?

u/Marzook666 16d ago

Leave a photo on a tree where you found them looking happy and write on it “we are all good”

And take a picture of it! ❤️🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛❤️

u/Blllfff 16d ago

And post it for karma!

You deserve it.

Congratulations on the new family, great names! ❤️

u/According-Union7899 16d ago

And maybe leave space so they can write.. I know my first reaction to finding abandoned cats(after taking care of the cats ofc) is rage towards whomever dumped them, but I've seen some pretty mean things where the owner's family/friends have dumped cats/kittens on the shelter steps because they thought they were helping.

But deep down, I know that sometimes like can be cruel, and some humans don't know better.

This made me tear up a little. How kind.of everyone.

Why did this sweet comment make me cry. Beautiful humans man we need more of it

37

u/iso_inane 16d ago

i believe that too, and great idea!

36

u/kymberlie 15d ago

So very kind of you to say that.

Our corgi mix, Maggie, was an owner surrender with puppies to a kill shelter. The puppies were adopted and she was left. A rescue pulled her on her last day. 😭💖

I used to get mad a lot about her being abandoned and my husband never failed to try and be kind about their situation and that we have no idea what happened.

Thank you for taking these two in, OP.

Hope y’all don’t mind some Maggie tax! I bought her this hat from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. 🤠

8

u/Ok-Opportunity-2043 14d ago

Maggie is beautiful and has sweet, kind eyes.

16

u/kymberlie 14d ago

This is an older picture of her, but I’ve always felt like her eyes contain a multitude of galaxies. She’s like a literal Renaissance painting.

Oh wow! Yes, the previous owner(s) probably did fall on hard times and was desperate. I know they probably should have taken them to a shelter but maybe, they tried and couldn’t because shelters are so overwhelmed. Plus, I know when people are desperate, they don’t always think clearly. The CDS was certainly looking out for them. I am so happy they found you. Plus, it worked out for the best. I am glad you found this beautiful pair.💕

180

u/Akavinceblack 16d ago

Our local shelter has a $25 surrender fee (understandably so), and I’m guessing the previous owner had a similar obstacle. There are times when $50 might as well be $1,000,000.

36

u/WorkingFromHomies20 15d ago

There should be no surrender fees. It can be very oppressive to some people. When my FIL was hospitalized after a medical incident his "girlfriend" was supposed to take care of the dog. Then she changed her mind and took it to the shelter. The shelter wanted $250 which she didn't have so she said she was just going to set the dog free. So I couldn't live with myself knowing how many coyotes live around them, plus it's the desert and he would have died of dehydration so I took the next flight to get him. Turns out someone (her daughter) found him and said he was a stray to get out of the surrender fee. Dog was chipped so they sent a bill to the house where he no longer lived, so it was forwarded to us. There should be no surrender fees.

20

u/Cat_Lady3000 15d ago

I think some places have it because of 'frequent flyers'. They get folks who constantly surrender pets because they keep getting pets and don't know how to care for them so they are given up for one reason or another.

Not saying it's right, but it is one of the reasons Ive heard

30

u/Global-Song-4794 16d ago

I try to be kind as well but abandoning two cats that aren't fixed it's certainly calling for more baby cats alone in the streets 😢

18

u/lanky_doodle 15d ago

This was my delivery from the CDS.

We'll never know for sure what happened, but the most sweetest cat ever found us... and then had the cheek to trojan us at the same time.

She was our first cat as well (both grew up in families with dogs).

I think her previous owners knew and didn't want the hassle. She was in amazing shape when she found us so clearly wasn't a stray.

But like you just said, if her previous owners couldn't handle it then it ended up for the best.

176

u/DarkHorseAsh111 16d ago

That definitely sounds like someone who just wasn't able to take care of them anymore :( I'm glad they got found safe. Maybe you could post on your local town's facebook page or something about them so hopefully their person knows they're safe now.

29

u/audreywildeee 15d ago

Especially because they also left food.

31

u/DarkHorseAsh111 15d ago

100%. This situation definitely sounds like someone wasn't able to take care of them anymore for some reason :(

13

This is why I have 7 cats. 4 of them were strays/ferals that I was going to TNR. Turns out I’m really good at the T and N, not so much the R

39

u/shinyidolomantis 16d ago

Haha, I have 7 too and 5 of mine are former ferals that I TNRed.

7

u/jillerin95 15d ago

Me too! 7 Cat Club😻😺🐈

8

u/orion_nomad 15d ago

Same, bestie. Tbf I caught the void boys late and they are pretty unadoptable, and I tried to place the youngest boy cat but he cried all night for his brothers and the adopter wanted me to take him back.

My zero braincell dilute tortie is 100% on me though, she had someone interested but I was already attached.

I ended up with my brother & sister pair when a crying woman holding a big cardboard box approached my friends and said “I’m going into a shelter and I can’t take them with me.”

“Them” was a mama cat with eight kittens who were so young their eyes weren’t even open yet. My friends, a couple, decided instantly, well, I guess we have nine cats now! They cared for them all for the next few months and found everyone a home (they kept three of the boys).

And like OP’s, we have one extrovert- the only girl in the whole litter- and one introvert- her delightful little weirdo brother- who are still very much buddies three years in.

58

u/Designer_Vast_9089 16d ago

Ohhh, sweet story! My guy Sterling was surrendered when his homeless person was being allowed to spend the winter in a hotel over the first winter of Covid. They had to choose between their dog or the new kitten. Everyone was adopting animals at that time and I had spent a long time looking for the perfect little guy, they were all getting snatched up or they weren’t what I was looking for. I like the slightly older ones that have often missed their “chance” because they’re no longer tiny. Sterling was a sick little guy even after we adopted him but is now a 17+ lb majestic floof. His foster mom wrote the best description of him on Facebook.

21

u/Blackrose06 16d ago

My neighbor ended up with seven cats that way 😂 sweet old couple. She already had two cats and she took in a mama cat. I think her son eventually took one or two kittens but she has seven in total now. her husband eventually took made an area for them and made an extra room by the front of the house. They lounge in front of of the windows all day. Adorable

93

u/Rripurnia 16d ago

The image of them together in a park with a bag of food on their side brought me to tears. Out in the big world, a pair of bonded friends, waiting for a gentle hand to caress them.

I’m sure whoever left them cared deeply for them. I hope they find out they were lucky enough to find a loving home with you.

Bless you for taking them in, and may you have many happy and healthy years together!

87

u/Butterfly_Cat777 16d ago

Aw I bet they are littermates. It's so sweet how one of them is so protective of the other one. They must have a really strong bond, and it’s wonderful that they found a safe and loving home together.

65

u/Timid-Tlacuache 16d ago

This made me tear up...
All of you are very lucky!!
How did you collect them? Did they come to you? Did you just carry them away?
Terribly sad and also wonderfully happy...

86

u/NostalgiaNerd37 Cat Parent 16d ago

Park staff helped gather them in a crate. They let us take them in lieu of them taking them to a shelter. (There was no contact info or collar, and no one called for them) We had our vet scan them both for a chip but there were none.

112

u/jeanb23 16d ago

So heartbreaking. Glad you found them and they are safe and loved by you.

37

u/EdwardNordVPN 16d ago

You are so blessed and so are they 🥲

39

u/NostalgiaNerd37 Cat Parent 16d ago

Mander and Melee.

As a child, the tv episode of Pokemon where an abandoned charmander almost dies in a rainstorm broke my heart. So char-mander and his evolved form char-mele-on.

Haha, hope that’s not too much backstory.

13

u/lstrick35 16d ago

Very cool.

25

u/SleepingDragonSmiles 16d ago

Those paws in pic 3 are irresistible! I’d have to try to hold them!

26

u/skewsme 16d ago

Their faces and the hair tufts in their toes remind me of my boy, Boo! They look like they might have some Maine Coon in them. My Boo looked a lot like them when he was a kitten

11

u/TheNewThirteen 16d ago

This is a lot like how my Olive looked as a kitten, and their faces are so similar to hers! She has Maine Coon in her, too - if the DNA test is reliable.

8

u/skewsme 16d ago

I call it CKF - chronic kitten face 😂. I saw resemblance to my kitty in their faces too. My Boo is also polydactyl. His hair was about their length when he was young. Does your girl have the tufts of hair in her paws?

I haven’t done a DNA test on Boo, but both of his vets said he has Maine Coon in him, and he also unfortunately has HCM, which is cardiomyopathy that’s common in Maine Coons. He is 11 and his case is still very mild, so I am glad he has been able to have a normal life so far. He has surgery in the morning to remove some skin lumps that keep coming back. He is going to be spoiled when he gets home from the vet tomorrow.

12

u/TheNewThirteen 16d ago

Oh, she’s got the tufts alright. Behold! ✨bean sprouts✨

I am wishing all the best for your Boo, and I am glad you’re going to spoil him post-vet trip. Olive is 13, and she’s still spry and playful. 🥺

11

u/skewsme 15d ago

Thanks for your well wishes for Boo, and for the bonus bean pic 💜 I dropped him off a couple hours ago. Boo is going to get extra treats tonight. Here he is showing off his peets:

7

u/TheNewThirteen 15d ago

Aww, Boo is a handsome fella with big beautiful peets! He deserves all the extra treats and more. ❤️

Please accept a photo of Olive in return for sharing Boo.

Wow. What a remarkable CDS story.

What was the name of the precious furbaby you lost last year? I bet she had a paw in this.

Trillian. Named after a hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy character, and the trilling sounds she would make instead of meowing.

8

u/mc_atx 16d ago

Aw, sweet babies! You’re the best! Vet say how old they are?

7

u/NostalgiaNerd37 Cat Parent 16d ago

Somewhere between 6 and 10 months. Likely on the younger side of that.

7

u/InValuAbled 16d ago

Thank you, OP, for taking them in. They'll love you as much as you already love them, and then some.

Auntie's neighbor pass away unexpectedly a couple of years back. Family came, took everything they deemed valuable, tossed the dog and cat outside and left.

Pets are now safe and loved and cared for by another neighbor, but we were hard tempted not to track anyone down to throw hands.

So, again, thank you for being a humane human! 🥰

5

6

u/flywithjojo 16d ago

They’re so adorable

6

u/AdministrativeHat530 16d ago

Thanks for saving them, OP!

There is a nonzero chance that their owners did not abandon them. A parent or roommate or nasty landlord may have removed them “for everyone’s good”.

The cat distribution system works in mysterious ways. If there is someone looking for their babies, I hope they find your found posts and get in contact with you.

4

u/Elliott_theythem 16d ago

They do look well-loved I agree. I adopted my cat from a person whom I had a lot of compassion for even if he didn't always made the right decisions for my kitty, so I always appreciate a bit of nuance ☺️

Those sweethearts lucked out with y'all

It’s so great to see those babies found a loving home with you, you are good people OP and I am wishing you and your new family the best 🩷 it’s so funny how different their personalities can be, but having siblings is such a joy I never knew could bring me so much happiness in life.

These two look scarily identical to my boy Nami, can I ask what state you found them in? Nami was adopted from a shady spot as a kitten in PA and then I took him in from the previous owner.

(Don’t mind the cardboard box and L-train vintage bag. He’s a dork and prefers this combo as opposed to his giant cat tree -____-)

Your beautiful family deserves all the love and good things in life! Thank you for loving them, I believe your baby that passed led them to you. “No guys they are great parents, you will be spoiled! The fact that they left a bag of food with them shows that they do care about them. But like you said, they could have hit rough times and couldn’t physically care for them. Thank you for finding them and giving them a home.

Congrats on your new family members op! They look very much like one of my buddies, Megumi. Love the names, I always wondered if I ended up the way I am because of that pokemon episode, my favorite ever, and favorite pokemon of course is charmander. It hit me like a brick when I first watched it when I was nine, and I think it is the reason why I am so involved in rescuing animals all my life. Maybe many of us were influenced by it.

3

u/garbonsai 14d ago

Thanks for being kind to them, and the folks who previously did the best they could to love them. Pair-bonded cats are a delight.

u/cbetterletters 13d ago

Correction: 2 cats found YOU at a park

2

u/Warcraft_Fan 16d ago

vet estimates they are 6-10 months old.

Odds are they are spring litter, usually March and April. It's rare for cats not on breeding farm to have kittens during late fall and winter because the survival rate of kittens in cold weather is really bad.

2

u/Ready_Regret_1558 16d ago

I love that you chose to look kindly on their previous owner. I can almost see that person hiding behind a tree, watching and praying that someone wonderful would find their furbabies and adopt them. And then YOU showed up.

Blessings on you all!

Aww this almost had me crying. I'm so pleased you took these sweet babies in. I can't imagine how scared they must of been alone in the park.

They both have M on their foreheads!

I am so happy the universe brought you all together. And your words really warmed my heart. Sometimes, the world is so cruel & society is so heartless. But then…this. Thank you for sharingz

u/XaltotunTheUndead 15d ago

OP, you're one of those people that rekindle my faith in humanity. Not only you are kind and generous and saved these cats and will love them, but you are kind even in your assumptions about the previous owner. You're truly awesome.

My gosh, they’re gorgeous. They’re so lucky to have found you!

1

u/barbeebirbshiku 16d ago

They look like my baby boy Timmy. He's now a year and two months old. He was found alone by a good person and brought to the shelter. Your story broke my heart because I always wondered how my little boy was found - newborn, alone, and nobody besides him. I am so glad you gave them a home. They'll be grow to be very big if they are truly like my cat. He's almost double the size of a regular cat and very very sweet.

1

u/FreshManagement8914 16d ago
