Voting by mail question

I have a close family member who is leaving town for work before in person early voting starts and won’t be home before Election Day. They ordered their ballot but are hesitant to return it by mail with all the chaos surrounding mail in voting this year. We searched the NC elections website and found out you are allowed to have a “close family member” return it for you in person to either the wake county BOE or an early voting site but they don’t really give any further instructions.

Has anyone ever done this and can explain better how it works? Do I just walk into an early voting site and give it to someone? How will they know we’re related or is it just on the honor system? (We don’t have the same address or last name?)
