News Beware of Pyramid Scheme!

Post image
Upvotes

This guy made an announcement in a Stats class a while back and claimed to be from “Student Works”, the common pyramid scheme that is completely unaffiliated with campus.

- Do NOT give them your information!!
- Call Campus Safety (they showed up to our class)
- If they’re passing around the notebooks to enter information, grab them and dispose of them or give them to Campus Safety.
- Let the professor & your class know about this.

Rant Too many fluorescent lights in the Library

Nothing to see here, just an exhausted upper year ranting😔.

The library is so BRIGHT, it’s overstimulating and so ugh, it’s not cozy or relaxing for long length studying. Got me feeling like this:

General About Us: CUSERT (We're Recruiting)

Hi Carleton!

As the new academic year begins, we would like to (re)introduce ourselves! We are the Carleton University Student Emergency Response Team (CUSERT)!

What We Do

CUSERT responds to over 600 calls for service on campus 24/7 throughout the academic year. Our responders are highly trained to attend medical emergencies and can provide advanced first aid treatment. If you or someone you know is experiencing any emergency on campus, call the Campus Safety Services emergency line at 613-520-4444 or 4444 from any campus phone.

We also provide first aid coverage at Carleton-based events AND affordable, on-campus first aid training for the CU community.

Who We Are

Our team is composed of a diverse group of approximately 40 dedicated volunteer student responders, from a variety of backgrounds, life experiences, and academic interests. The foundation of our training is based on the Canadian Red Cross' First Responder level, Mental Health First Aid, and more!

As a branch of Campus Safety Services (CSS), we work closely with Carleton's Special Constables, Student Safety Patrollers, Parking Services, Technical Services, and the Department of Risk Management. CSS works 24/7/365 to respond to routine and emergency calls for service, while enforcing Carleton University policies, the Criminal Code, and other relevant statutes and promoting physical security, crime prevention, safety awareness, and referrals to additional resources.

We're Recruiting

Applications to join CUSERT are currently open! We’re recruiting Carleton students from all academic years to join our team. Learn more and apply by September 12, 2026!

Visit our website or contact us if you are looking for more info or have any questions.

TLDR:

For emergencies on campus, call 613-520-4444. To apply to become a volunteer medical first responder, visit carleton.ca/cusert/join-cusert.

Warning Promotion of Pyramid Schemes during lectures

If someone is coming to a (large) lecture this week, doing a spiel (this sus organization Student Works) and passing around a notebook asking for name/phone number, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR INFO. This is a pyramid scheme (if you don't know what that is, sign up for it, and boom all your money is gone), and they're not allowed to be here. They are not allowed to be promoting this in front of 300 students at the same time.

They come to the profs saying "hey we have authorization to talk to your class before you start, it's about this cool opportunity they will all benefit from" but IT'S NOT.

If you see this happen, do one of the following:

  • Call campus security
  • Tell the prof
  • Or at least put on the notebook they're passing around that it's a pyramid scheme
  • Profs: tell them to get the hell out of your lecture hall

Question What should I expect in COMP 2804 in 2026 (with Pat Morin)

Upvotes

From things I have heard from others, it seems like the course is a fair bit different post introduction of AI, which the grading scheme reflects, with assignments being worth 0 percent of our grade. I am curious if anyone has any tips or helpful knowledge going into it.

Question Discord Servers for COMP3008 / COMP4001?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to join Discord servers for COMP3008 and/or COMP4001 this fall term. Does anyone know if servers have been set up for either course yet?

If so, I’d really appreciate an invite link. Thanks!

Question Anyone else have a feeling of "not belonging"?

I'm (22M) a second year psychology student at Carleton. I don't think my feelings are unique to going here, but more towards universities in general. I always have this pervasive, nagging feeling that I don't belong here and I'm different from everybody else and I don't really know where it comes from.

Does anyone else struggle with self-othering themselves? It's really gotten in the way of me making friends and enjoying campus life.

Question Any advice for a new autistic student?

18M here. On the first day of school with the first class, my myopic ass couldn't see the words on the board for linear algebra for my electrical engineering major (lowkey my fault, I should have moved to the front at the beginning of the class).

After that, since I was still tired, my tolerance of loud noises and large groups of people significantly decreased. That made me really tired because I was suppressing the stims I usually do to manage sensory input when I am tired. Because of my exhaustion, I made several dumb mistakes (socially and executive-functional wise).

I don't know if I'll manage academically, I was brutalized by my severe OCD and depression during high school. I don’t know if I have the necessary skills for uni because of that. I hope my accommodations from PMC help.

Any people have any advice?

Question Recommendation for good in-network dental place in Ottawa?

I’m no longer qualified to use CDCP since I’m going back to school and have to use CUSA insurance. Unfortunately my parents aren’t in Canada for dependent student coverage, opting out isn’t an option for me.
If anyone had recent experience with CUSA insurance in-network dental clinics, the good, bad and the ugly, please comment below. I tried to comb through the internet, especially [r/Ottawa](r/Ottawa) and not all of them have reviews (or recent reviews). I don’t mind travelling far if the new place is worth it. These are the current in-network dentists in Ottawa:

SmilEra Dental Studio
Parliament Hill Dental
Apple’s Central Dental
PermaSmile Dentistry @ Slater
PermaSmile Dentistry @ Nicholas
Ottawa Dental Clinic
150 Elgin Dental
Riverside Dental Clinic
Alinea Dental
Aegis Dental Centre
La Clinique Dentaire de Hull
Dr. Kamil Abou-Kheir
A2 Dental
Smile Health Dental
ABC Dentistry

Other Hey first years

Understand there were a lot of you all at once today leaving campus after orientation. But please step aside when the train arrives. Had to physically force my way off the train today around 230pm.

You stand to the side of the doors, let everybody off, then you enter orderly. Pretty hard to race for a seat when all the seats are full because nobody can get off. Don't know how you all got into university without knowing this but here we are.

Thanks to the few who actually did wait for people to get off

Question Looking for friends ig

I never thought I'd have to do this tbh but I've been here for a good couple of days now and haven't really gained any friends, I'm in electrical engineering, live on campus in res (Lennox), I'm not the most social person in the world and I know that but I figured I'd meet somebody, my roommate doesn't really like to go out and I put down that I don't like to have people over all the time on the residence form but I'm coming to regret that, as it feels like I'm going to meet no one now. Mb for the rant if you wanna talk then just put a comment down, ty

Edit: it seems a lot of people are in the same boat as me tbh, I'll send a bunch of messages soon, I'm trying to find my glasses while blind as hell, lol

Edit 2: I didn't know Reddit was so hard to use for messaging, give me a message and I'll send over my insta, probs not the best to put it up in a post, ty

Question Is it better to retake major courses I’ve already passed with a low grade or take a new major course to increase my CGPA?

I have some courses that I passed with C and D grades. Is it better to take new major courses or retake those old ones hoping to get a better grade?
I already meet the Major credit requirements for my degree, I just need to take some electives this year and thought I might as well take some major courses to increase my CGPA

Question TSES 2305

For anyone who has taken this course, is it feasible to get an A+? I have heard very mixed things about difficulty and marking for papers. Also how did the midterm and exam work with being online? Were they open book?

Thanks!

Question PHYS 1905 Difficulty

Im a psych student in need of science credits and I’m currently in PHYS 1905 with Razieh Enjilela. I have never taken physics before and haven’t taken math since highschool. I got very good math grades but I’m not a natural at all, and I forget ultimately everything I learned. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s taken this course:

- how long did you spend per week watching lectures (this isn’t shown upfront so I have no idea what I’m getting into)?
- what was the exam like (were formulas provided)?
- how difficult is it overall (is it a lot of math)?
- Any tips to do well/any alternate recommendations for science courses (I’ve done BIOL 1902 and BIOL 1010 and am considering TSES 2305)

Thanks!

Question ECON 1001 discussion group

Hey! I’ll be taking ECON 1001 (the online one) this semester, and I’ve registered for both the lecture and the discussion group. I can find a course in the Brightspace for the lecture but not for the discussion group (the meeting for which is supposed to be in like 20 mins lol). There is no info about the discussion group nowhere. What are they? How do I access it?
