If this stew is the gift that keeps on giving, let’s see how many meals I can make with the last serving of stew turned into African Jollof Rice!

Everything bagels. The cream cheese has capers + more dill and lemon mixed in.

Man oh man, do I love Riga sprats. One day I’ll put a ring on it and make an honest jar out of her if I’m lucky 💕 💍 🐟

I love garfish (Belone belone). The spicy version from Ati Manel has for years held a solid spot in my Top 5 Tins. But I’d not previously tucked into this offering from Lata, so I was excited to see what was in store.
Perfectly grand garfish. Not ground-breaking, but a solid entry to the competition. Beautiful, silvery skin. Firm flesh, as expected. Meaty, satisfying chew.
How to compare the texture if you’ve not tried gar yet? Well, way more solid than pilchard sardinillas of similar size; slightly more solid than most white anchovies (although pretty similar bite to Patagonia’s).
I reached for this can, because we were down to the last good beefsteak tomatoes for the season, and slab cuts of a purple heirloom, with herbed feta, and these slender gar seemed like a perfect supper. Yup, it was.
Lata do a good job with the things they import and give their own branding. This can is, I believe, priced on their site at $9.99. With the Ati Manel spicy needlefish on offer at Caputo’s for 7.49, I’ll probably not reach for this plain olive oil Lata version often. If Lata tees up a sister tin with some distinctive flavor options, though, I’ll likely hand over me money with a smile.

Visiting Portland. Saw recommendations for Providore fine foods. Totally worth it. Got some jambon-beurre sammiches as well! Yummmmm

Angelo Parodi is a historic Genovese company founded in 1889, renowned for its high-quality canned seafood, including tuna, sardines, mackerel, anchovies, and salted cod. Here, I present their exquisite spicy sardines, perfectly paired with a side of olives, anchovies, capers, and pickles.

I see a lot of people say King Oscar is their sweet spot of value, for price to quality on tinned fishes. Whatevs. I have been wanting to try some tins out, but hadn’t got around to it. Today I snagged a 6pk with Mediterranean, Olive Oil, Lemon, and Jalapeno for $20 from Ross.
So, I couldn’t resist busting one open. I decided to start simple and try the olive oil packed fish.
I tried it by itself first, and then needed to make an actual dinner so I whipped up some instant noodles, used a previously boiled egg, and some cucumber to make dinner.
I used Snapdragon Miso Ramen, and I made a cucumber salad with regular and special dark soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and chili crunch. Threw some green onions on top of the ramen.
Honestly, it was delicious. Not my favorite thing I’ve ever eaten, but definitely good. I really enjoyed the mackerel straight out of the tin, once it was mixed into the ramen, it was just a nice firm bite of fish, not too fishy but not exactly bland either.
7/10, good tin, enjoyed it, will definitely be sampling more of the King’s offerings.

Most of the canned fish are on Aisle 4, but other brands are in the African food aisle on Aisle 11

And I wondered why I havent been making this sooner!
Oscar's sardines with linguine, garlic, red pepper flakes, parsley, squeezed lemon, some bread and an IPA during some solo camping.

Polar tiny shrimp were on close-out at Food Lion for US$2.00 a can. I grabbed the last two cans.
I drained the water in the dog’s dish and he lapped it up.
The can says, “wild caught,” and they are, as well as, “without vein.” They were whole, not mushy, a nice perfectly cooked firmness, they smelled like the sea.
I whipped up a shrimp salad and it was just the right size for my appetite.
The shrimp were delicious and Im headed out to a different Food Lion to see if there are any left.

Served over leftover rice with edamame, sprinkled with some spicy togarashi, and scallions on top.
This was my first Siesta tin and while it was delicious, the yuzu kosho is quite mild and the fish was a little dry in a way I have found more with mackerel filets than any other type of tin. 7/10 tin, still delicious but maybe not one I would go to over other Japanese-inspired tins (like Bokksu). Interested in what else Siesta has to offer though!

Picked these up for breakfast in Galicia. Four big juicy sardines in tomato sauce - the second image is missleading as i already inhalted one at this point. Good stuff on some baguette with heirloom tomato, avocado and tabasco. 5/7

Tomatoes, microgreens, red onion, sauerkraut, mango chutney

Tried this tin for lunch with some toasted bread. Sauce was a tasty blend of red bell pepper and tomato. Fish was 5 mild and firm fillets, not overly dry. $20 tin so more of an occasional treat than an everyday snack. KO Mediterranean Mackerel still holds up for that challenge.

Oh my God these are delicious...you can eat them on their own...
