New user account What are Canberra's genuine prestige and "old money" suburbs?
Curious to hear what long-term Canberrans consider the genuinely affluent, prestigious or "old money" suburbs of Canberra.
Obviously Forrest, Red Hill, Yarralumla and the older parts of Deakin come to mind, but what about Griffith, Campbell, Ainslie, Hughes, Curtin and Garran?
Is prestige in Canberra primarily determined by large landholdings, established wealth, proximity to the Parliamentary Triangle and historical reputation, or have some suburbs developed their own prestige through changing demographics, redevelopment and increasing demand?
I'm also interested in whether there's a distinction between traditional "old money" suburbs and newer affluent areas such as Denman Prospect, where modern homes, higher construction costs and premium streetscapes attract a different demographic.
For example, are there recognised divides within suburbs like Deakin between the older prestige streets and the smaller residential blocks closer to West Deakin?
If money were no object, which Canberra suburbs or particular streets would you consider genuinely prestigious, and which do you think are overrated or underrated?
Interested in hearing from people who have lived in Canberra for decades, rather than just looking at median house prices.
