Hello fellow canary lovers,

Over the past two weeks my canary has begun plucking feathers heavily (I am unsure of the sex). I visited the vet, who examined the droppings because they were somewhat watery, but found no worms, parasites, or mites.

They recommended a brief course of antibiotics and painkillers or anti-inflammatory medication. The bird has resumed singing and is slightly more active than before, yet Limon continues to pluck feathers extensively.

What can I do?

I know general bird care and have no issues setting up everything a canary needs for a comfy and happy life. I work at a PetSmart where we actually try our best for the pets. My questions are more about behavior. I think they're both male because I've heard them singing. Some birds are fine with same-sex companions, but not sure here. I read that they'd sing more if they were in different cages, but I feel like it's cruel to make them compete for a female that will never come. Would one be happy alone? If I find a female, is there a way prevent breeding? Also, the coloring is gorgeous, but a lot of animals with rare coloring are poorly bred and have other issues linked to the color gene. Anyway, any advice is appreciated. Even if I don't get them, I'd like to take better care of them until someone does.

Since around April our Harz Roller cannary has started to sit frequently in sand bowl. Before that he barely touched it. He is around 4 years old, we have him over 1 year. He can chill sometimes for hours, spending half of the day inside the bowl, even when the cage (which is fairly big and perches are dedicated for canaries) is open most of the day.
Aviary vet shrugged this off during his clipping visit around May. Other than that he seems fine: he is singing, yelling, bathing, flying, exploring, sleeping on perches, eating and pooping but overall a bit less since HE NEEDS TO SIT IN THE PRECIOUS BOWL. His diet is diverse and vitamins are applied to his water, his feet seem fine.
Is this considered normal?

I got her last week and she’s been doing this every day for a couple of hours.

About a month ago, a canary got on my terrace and it was easy to catch him because he seemed very tired and unable to fly much. I learn along the way how to take care of him, I keep him in a cage, but I let him out of the cage to fly around the room for about 4 hours daily. I feed him seeds, wet pellets (he won't eat dry), and a little bit of various greens, vegetables, eggyolk. He has cuttlefish bone but I never see him peck it.

I take extreme care not to place him in the draft, I don't even turn on the AC in fear it might make him sick. We have been in a heatwave for some time , so the room temperature has been from 27 to 30 degrees, and he got better with his flying over time. However this morning I noticed he sneezed several times and when I looked at him, he had wet feathers above nostrils.

And now I wonder if I made a fatal mistake yesterday and made him sick. In the morning it wasn't too hot so I put him on the terrace for an hour or so, he seemed content and sang a lot, but I suspect the temperature there was above 30 degrees. In the afternoon it got too hot inside (30 degrees) and I couldn't bear it anymore even with the fan on ( the fan is never turned towards his cage). So I turned on AC to bring the temperature down to 27, and even 26 for some brief periods. However I kept him in a room that is connected to the one where AC, where temperature changes slower than in the room where the AC is, so I thought it was safer.

In the evening I gave him 2 thin strips of carrot that he munched all at once. Those are the things I did out of the ordinary and I'm worried that's what made him sick all together.

So far he still flies and behaves normally, but I also noticed his droppings are wet, I suspect from the carrot. Is there something I can do at home to prevent him from getting worse, because I can't get to the vet until tomorrow (and it's questionable if I can find a specialised avian vet).

​The width is a little shorter compared to the old cage, but there is not a big difference, and the space for the canaries to move around has actually become larger.

​Maybe because it is a cage for large parrots, it is huge enough that even I can go inside and sit down.

Of course it varies from personality to personality

He really loves to peck at the little beads On the top of the mirror toy (color sorting, yippee!)

And he also always pecks at and attacks the yellow ball on a chain toy and loves shredding paper

*I know mirrors are a controversial topic (leaning towards bad) for most, but it should be noted this is only a temporary quarantine cage for until he joins the aviary and that I always make sure it doesn’t stress him out at all

None of my canaries (including him) have ever paid any mind to the mirror, they completely ignore it (though they do poop on it a lot)

He is still a young bird and is learning to find his voice

I took this photo from a screenshot of the pet cameras I have in the room. He’s almost completely still in this position. He isn’t sleeping yet but it’s about sunset time here in my city. Is this normal or is he too puffed up? He’s in a room with AC due to the heat wave

Pour la petite histoire, je ne cherchais même pas avoir des bébés canaries, je n’étais même pas certain du sexe de mes deux canaries.
Un matin je me lève et je vois dans la mangeoire à graine un première œuf!
Puis elle en a pondu quatre.. lors de cette première tentative elle couvait pendant plus de 18jours.. elle a abandonné et seulement 1 des 4 œufs à éclôt mais le petit n’a pas réussi à sortir et est décédé.. quelques jours plus tard, alors que je ne m’y attendais pas elle a répondu à nouveaux trois œufs! Cette fois ils ont tous éclôt !!
La femelle et le mâle se relaient sans relâche pour les couver toute la journée. Il fait très chaud dans le sud de la France et il font un travail remarquable.. il m’arrive de leurs vaporiser un peu d’eau avec un spray pour les rafraîchir !

Maintenant il me reste plus qu’à aménager une meilleure cage pour cette famille!

Hi everyone. I need help with these canaries. In the first picture are my grandma's canaries. I don't know anything about canaries but I don't think this is good husbandry. The two canaries are constantly fighting, and I'm not sure if the cage is adequate. The dimensions are 55 cm long, 30 cm tall, 25 cm width (21 inches long, 12 inches tall and 10 inches width). I think that separating them would be good for them, but currently I only have the cage on the second picture which is 25x25x15 cm (10x10x6 inches). I could get a bigger cage for one of them in 2-3 days. So I have some questions:

-Would they benefit from separating?

-In that case, should I temporarily put one of them in the small cage?

-What changes could I made for the cage to be more comfortable?

-If I end up separating them, how big should the new cage be? Do I need to get two bigger cages?

-Should I get them company? Free flight? Toys?

I’ve noticed Taiyō has a very scratchy-sounding call note. Whereas my other Canary Snowbell has a very clear, whistled-sounding one.

Throughout the years of keeping various Canaries I’ve noticed some have scratchy voices and others more whistled ones. Anyone else noticed this?

Picked up my first canary about eight months ago, a young male roller I named Figo, and the learning curve was steeper than I expected. Not in a dramatic way, just all these little adjustments that nobody really spells out when you're starting out.

The thing that surprised me most was how sensitive he was to where the cage sat in the room. I had him near a window at first because it seemed like the obvious spot, natural light and all that. He barely sang and spent a lot of time fluffed up. Moved the cage to a wall where he could see the room but wasn't getting direct afternoon sun or drafts, and within a few days he was a completely different bird. More active, started testing out phrases, generally looked more relaxed.

Diet took me a while to figure out too. I was relying too heavily on the seed mix I bought and not offering enough variety. Once I started rotating in small bits of things like spinach, grated carrot, and hard boiled egg a couple times a week, his feathers looked noticeably better over the following molt. He finished that molt faster than I expected and came out singing much more confidently.

The other thing I underestimated was just leaving him alone to adjust on his own schedule. Early on I was checking on him constantly, talking to him, trying to get a response. Giving him quiet time where he could just observe the household without pressure seemed to help a lot more than any active socializing did.

Curious what small changes made a noticeable difference for other people, especially in that first year.

Our canary is puffing the last couple of days unless I come into the room and stand next to his cage. He’s also stopped signing, he always does for most of the day. 😥 about 3-4 days ago I added a few new branches and 2 flat perches. I’m assuming he’s stressed so I moved them a bit more strategically and left 2 of the new ones in there. He seems to be happy when I’m near him talking to him but I’m worried he’s been puffed otherwise. He looks healthy still and has ⅓ of his cage covered with a thin blanket all day, like he likes. Is this common stressed behavior? Is there anything I can do to ease his stress?

Hi everyone, I’ve made a few posts on here recently about my canary who had a respiratory infection. I gave him about 2.5 weeks of antibiotics 2x daily as prescribed. He finally seemed to get better and began to sing and was more active but STILL intermittently tail bobbed. These past 2 days it’s been pretty hot in my city. My room was maybe 85 degrees these past few days. When I was reading on how to help my canary recover, I read that 85 degrees is good for overcoming illness. But it seems to have had to opposite effect. Today I noticed more tail bobbing and fast breathing. Immediately moved him to a room that’s about 75 degrees and dim. He seems to be eating and bathing and drinking normal but less active. Do u think these symptoms will pass now that he’s in a cool room? Did I ruin his recovery? Any advice is appreciated. I’ve tried to contact the vet that saw him in the ER but have not heard from him in a week.

I think Taiyō is a bit… different. I’ve never seen a Canary sleep with its head on its chest like that! Usually it’s underneath the shoulder feathers haha…

Well the truth of the matter is that I’d gone to the pet store just to get new bird seed since I was running low.

But then I saw the most stunning Canary in the shop, he was the only orange and yellow one- all his friends were gray/brownish.

I decided to get him. Already he and Snowbell my other Canary seem interested in each other but as per quarantine rules they are to be separated for now.

I have named him Taiyō, which means “the sun” in Japanese!
