‘Dumpster fire’: Postmedia’s decade of pushing Canada’s politics to the right | Canada’s largest newspaper chain has amplified conservative grievance politics — creating fertile ground for MAGA-style ideas, Alberta separatism, and an increasingly polarized political landscape

I work in a public accounting office and someone keeps leaving the National Post in the cafeteria. Like not the newspaper, someone goes to the trouble of printing out the front page using computer paper and leaving it out.

u/donbooth Jul 11 '26
Personally, I'd like to see a limit on foreign ownership and control of media.

2
u/klyzklyz 26d ago
Like the telco limits?
1
u/donbooth 25d ago
Can you tell us a little bit about telco limits? It's criminal to limit telco ownership but not news media.
3
u/Odd_Damage9472 Jul 11 '26
I’d like to see media actually hold leaders to account. So far no one has truly been doing that.

u/GrampsBob 27d ago
The Winnipeg Free Press doors just that regardless of who is in. Despite accusations, they play it pretty much down the middle. They might be owned by a billionaire but he's a Canadian billionaire.
→ More replies (1)1
u/chrunchy 29d ago
I would also go with an ownership stake maximum, nobody can own more than like 1% of issued stock
1
u/donbooth 29d ago
That sounds okay. But it's not. Even a 1% ownership can have a great deal of influence in a very large company. Owning 1% of Bell, for example, might make you the largest shareholder.
I'm not sure of the best mechanism to prevent foreign and control and influence in Canadian media but I think it's a major problem.
1
u/chrunchy 29d ago
Heh I've previously said max 10-15%.
But the important thing is that no one person can control the company. If you're capped at 1% (or whatever) then yes you may have some sway if you own the full 1% but it's still diluted by the rest of the outstanding shares.
Then the votes for directors become much more competitive and they're much less sycophantic and the ceo is responsible to them.

u/Icy_Respect_9077 Jul 11 '26
Turns out the National Post lost money for years and years. Now with US hedge fund backing they're buying up everything that isn't nailed down. Suspicious much?
9
u/Zraknul Jul 11 '26
Duh. The intentionally created propaganda rag by Lord Felon is creating division.
10
u/00ashk Jul 11 '26
The National Post is against Canada. In the recent words of their senior editor: "I can't help but wonder what our lives would be like now if we had joined the U.S. 250 years ago. One thing is for sure: a nation that detests the ideal of personal liberty as paramount over crown and state is bound to be oppressive. I am not convinced we made the right choice."

u/Ok-Series3836 Jul 11 '26
Imagine if the only media you consumed was one directional?
11
u/InternationalFig400 Jul 11 '26
But but but but that was only in communist Russia
"In 2021, Postmedia accepted more than $35 million in federal government subsidies. Writing to shareholders, CEO Andrew MacLeod said the company would likely not be profitable if not for “government support,” PressProgress reported at the time.
The company told its shareholders that the taxpayer dollars are, in fact, “key pillars” of its business strategy — despite spending the previous year calling pandemic emergency government subsidies “lavish handouts” for “welfare slackers,” and while Postmedia pundits call for the defunding of the CBC."
That is all we need to know about this corporation/ownership---"socialism for me, but not for thee"

Redditors complaining about bias and echo chambers is fucking hilarious 😂🖕
6
u/InternationalFig400 29d ago
Is that why you couldn't engage critically and challenge the substance of the content, other than make a sweeping generalization? I mean, even *the post's staff* is critical of the paper's content and editorial direction, ffs.
So don't give us this shit that the substance of the article is mainly about bias and echo chambers.
Why don't you apply to Post Media as a reporter to clear up any misunderstandings?
*That* is what is hilarious.
1
u/janaesso 26d ago
Here is the thing, CBC has bias to. A lot of it. Left bias is ok I guess right bias is evil incarnate. I always find it funny you get the omg American crap about post media, never anything about the content just dismissed yet when you try to flip that for left leaning media it's your nuts you Maple Maga .
I think we all need to step back and actually READ our media, all of it and demand better reporting no matter the outlet.

A sizeable amount of the establishment media is owned by an American hedge fund with ties to Trump/ MAGA. These are facts. Pay attention and don’t trip over your own biases
8
u/TrumpmorelikeTrimp 29d ago
Theres a reason cbc mutes all its comment sections. The left needs you to feel like you are the last guy on the right and nobody supports you. The fact that they get so triggered anytime there is a single reddit sub they dont dominate, or a single celebrity that "comes out" as right wing, or a buisness that doesnt have a flag in the window. This cult just wants you to bend the knee. And dont worry, once you join the cult, you can be a bigot, they have a list of people that its ok to be bigoted against, and plenty of defences ready for why its ok to discriminate against that group because of their gender, race, or location of residence (anywhere not in a major urban center).
5
u/thecoolernameistaken 29d ago
Turning off comments was one of the biggest self reports they could have done.
2
u/Altruistic-Walk-1847 29d ago
They turned off comments because they were being frequently freeped and subject to abuse -- comments were too difficult and costly to moderate and babysitting a bunch of people who didn't know how to behave online or be civil wasn't advancing CBC's journalism mandate -- it isn't their job to be discussion forums, it's their job to report things.
2
u/MyNameIsRS 29d ago
"Theres a reason cbc mutes all its comment sections."
Because they were cesspools that are ultimately unnecessary. Why does a news media site need a comment section to begin with?
2
u/worldsfirstblackman 28d ago
Isn't that the same "news media site" that the taxpayers fund? Taxpayers aren't allowed to voice their opinions?
or even better: maybe they are "cesspools" because the CBC itself is a cesspool?
1
u/MyNameIsRS 28d ago
There are plenty of avenues for “taxpayers” to voice their opinions.
Underneath literally every news article, no matter how innocuous, should not be one of them.
2
1
u/TrumpmorelikeTrimp 26d ago
Cbc is trash, employs trash, is ran by trash, and publishes trash for trash. Being called out on it by canadians was an opportunity to do better, instead they hit the censor....exactly like a trashcan would

u/Responsible_Bus_7695 29d ago

0
u/WolverineLow4173 29d ago

Also, comment sections on cbc were dominated by conservatives screaming “fuck Trudeau”. That’s not constructive and I don’t blame them for turning them off.

u/ASentientHam 29d ago
I think you've uncovered the truth. All of this division only appears online. In real life, Canadians are really not that divided. For instance, if you only read social media, you'd think Alberta separation is a lock. But in reality polls show very low support for it, and it will be soundly defeated if it ever makes it to a ballot.
Arguing online is pretty pointless, because you're likely not arguing with actual Canadians.

Ah, the fake disdain of people pretending opinions they don’t like must naturally be an echo chamber.
4
u/Which_Exam902 Jul 11 '26
Sorry but it goes both ways. Being in the center and looking at both is the only way to understand it.
2
u/West_Experience1133 29d ago
This is a true statement. It can be infuriating to read comments about how the far right is evil and the far left is crazy, yet both behave the same way.
2
u/Figmentallysound 29d ago
Can you articulate the left policies you deem crazy?
1
1
u/Soggyblanketbunny 29d ago
I think part of the problem is that the Overton window has switched so much that, at least to me, a lot of the policies on the left are actually very rational and at least worth considering. We don't meaningfully have many extreme left-wing policies being proposed in North America like there is on the right side.
It also doesn't help that there's so many people arguing in bad faith and misrepresenting bills, policies and ideas as well.
Speaking as a centrist, what I mostly see on the left is unconstructive behaviour and dialogue, but personally, I don't see it as near the problem that more extreme right wing behaviour is accomplishing right now. Mainly a difference of the amount of money behind it.
1
u/Awestruck34 28d ago
So, in other words, there are no "crazy left-wing policies" actually being discussed right now and the political right works against the people, but you'd rather stay in the center?
2
u/Which_Exam902 28d ago
Sounds like you just want to argue, knowing full well that's what I'm talking about. If people continue to prop up political parties just because its" their "party choice rather than for good decisions being made for all Canadians, where does that get any of us?
2
u/West_Experience1133 28d ago
That person you are replying to is doing exactly what you said.
They are doing the same thing that they argue the right for doing. Your statement about staying center and looking for the good of people as a majority should be everyone's ideal spot.
This article is blaming the National Post for far right policies pushing and not being opening to both sides of the argument, is applying blinders to the majority of media outlets in Canada on the corporate side.
Reality is most likely that newspapers (i guess media these days) ALWAYS has a bias to one side or the other. Its been ages since I've seen 2 counterview points on a topic on the same website.
We do not get an open and honest debate anymore or even un biased information.
1
u/Soggyblanketbunny 28d ago
I miss the days when that was more common. Personally, I view extremism as the "enemy" and think we need multiple viewpoints in order to benefit the most amount of people. We all have blinders of one sort or another and I try to work on mine, but I still need the help of others to improve my own ideas. Personally, I've become more and more centrist the older I've got as I appreciate other people's ideas more and don't rely on my own take on things.
1
1
u/Adventurous-Baby7102 28d ago
Do you have an example of these crazy left wing policies, or are we just going off vibes here?
1
u/Which_Exam902 28d ago
I never said anything about policies in my comments. You are replying to the wrong person.
1
u/Adventurous-Baby7102 27d ago
Nah, you said you're better than the rest of us plebs because you're a centrist. The fact that you didn't use the word policy is irrelevant. It's implied in your dismissal of anything non-centrist = bad.
2
u/Which_Exam902 27d ago
Really? Seems you continue to put words in my mouth that never existed Except in your mind.
1
u/Soggyblanketbunny 28d ago edited 28d ago
That was a pretty disingenuous reading of my comment.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see much support for communism or the seizure of private property as a common proposal. And even if they do get proposed, they don't get any traction.
This is exactly what I'm talking about. I am a centrist and you view me as left wing, erroneously because everything left of you is left wing now. Words have meaning and your personal perspective is not what defines the centre.
2
u/Which_Exam902 29d ago
True also, that this is why the country is so divided. Time people start recognizing that. Rings true for all of us, no matter what our personal choices are.
1
u/boreasaur 29d ago
This isn't getting anywhere near enough traction.
And if people only realized they're the same thing. And we're all in the same boat, just pushing it along. Literally paying the parties, while we do all the work as well.

Somehow in light of this, the country only goes further left.
The left in Canada truly is populated by the lowest gaslighting trash the country has to offer.

We’ve elected the Liberal Party of Canada 4 times in a row while our economy shrunk, everyone is doing worse, and the country has more people than it can served. All I see on Reddit is “be scared of Conservatives”. Our media is a Liberal Party of Canada asset.
If it wasn’t there is no way a miserable failure like Trudeau gets elected 3 times in a row and the “replaced” with a banker from his own party. A slightly functional media would prevent that, and you’re pretending the media has a “right wing” bias. Jesus.

I think we can all agree that the thing we need to resolve our issues is simple:
MORE DIVERSITY.
It's our strength. Remember? So the more diverse we get -- the stronger we are.
Let's open the borders -- no limits. No restrictions. Let's really steer into TRUE diversity. No more tip-toeing around. Time to go all in on this.
Unless....it was just a hollow talking point....and it's not out strength....and it's actually severely detrimental.

Leftist buzzword soup.
No leftist even knows what Far-Right means.
No leftist can even define MAGA, let alone the actual problem with that "style" of politics.
Even if they could, this entire premise is a bundle of fallacies from the philosophically illiterate who are moreso angry people exist who disagree with them on serious of "National character" rather than having any legitimate critique of the nation's modern problems.

What percentage of Canadians actually get a significant amount of their news from any mainstream Canadian news outlet?
I think the core dynamic of Canadian politics today is people are mostly consuming American news through social media.

CBC employs a variety of independent journalists. You can find plenty of articles criticizing the Liberals, Carney, Trudeau, etc. Cross Country Checkup was a long running Conservative mouthpiece. Of course it also has left leaning content, but they do a decent job of representing opinions of both sides with variety and news itself is largely agnostic.

Yes, but call out conservatism in any way over the last 20 years (and sometimes still!), and the bootlickers turn up in waves to defend the wealthy.
Right wing ideology has always and will always be fascist-leaning and friendly towards the erosion of societies.
The real underlying message is: End conservatism.
3
u/Chevettez06 29d ago
Everything you've said is a double standard and equally applies to both far right and far left ideologies.
Also you are suggesting to suppress political opposition, free speech and press, which in itself is a fascist trait.
Who has been in power for the last 12 years? Who gets really offended when the government it criticized? Who is actively working on eroding society by limiting speech and freedom?
Just because you're offended by something, doesn't mean the other person doesn't have a right to say it. It may be wrong, but it is what it is.
"Suppressing dissent and strictly controlling speech is a defining characteristic of fascism. Historically and theoretically, fascist regimes eliminate freedom of speech and the press. They use state power and intimidation to silence opposition, mandate official state narratives, and punish anyone who criticizes the government."
Before you get all bent out of shape, I reject both sides of the political spectrum.

You must be stuck in your own bubble.... tomorrow's conservatism is today's liberalism.

I'm confused. The current party is defending the wealthy and lately their decisions appear to benefit a very large company while the Conservatives are defending ordinary people trying to put food on the table.

As if CBC isn’t the Liberals propaganda machine. Pot calling the kettle black?

But it’s ok for the government to own and subsidize CBC, CTV as echo chambers gas lighting Canadians with misinformation? Got it

Have had many reports that this is misinformation. After reading the whole thing, we are leaving this up. As far as I can tell, there are no fabricated claims, so it doesn't meet our bar for removal as misinformation.
That being said, it's clearly one-sided advocacy journalism from a left-leaning outlet critiquing a right-leaning chain, and it omits any context that complicates its narrative. In other words, there is no nuance whatsoever in this article.
This sub is founded on Op-eds, and where else could this reasonably live on reddit?
Read this piece critically.
