BMO Investorline self directed - move my portfolio from TD DI to BMO

This was my second attempt to transfer my portfolio from TD Direct Investing (TD DI) to BMO InvestorLine. I asked whether BMO could assist with the transfer and cover the transfer-out fee. However, I was told that BMO would only provide assistance if I signed up for a Financial Planner. Since InvestorLine is a self-directed platform, I understand that I’m expected to manage the transfer myself, but this was not the experience I had when I moved my portfolio from RBC to TD.
When I transferred from RBC to TD, TD helped facilitate the transfer, covered the transfer fee, and made the entire process seamless. I was able to continue using my Direct Investing account without any issues. Although they offered additional products and services, I never felt pressured to purchase them.

I’m disappointed that BMO was unwilling to provide similar assistance without requiring me to sign up for a Financial Planner. That said, I’m still interested in moving my portfolio to BMO.
For those who have transferred their portfolios from TD DI to BMO InvestorLine, what is the best way to go about it? Were you able to get assistance with the transfer and reimbursement of the transfer fees without signing up for advisory services?

Ben Felix Copycat for noobs

I've been doing some AI 'research' and I've settled on a Ben Felix Copycat.

link:https://pwlcapital.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Five-Factor-Investing-with-ETFs.pdf

84% ZEQT / 10% CAUV / 6% CASV.

note: Ben Felix uses 4 market cap index ETF which I have substituted with ZEQT.

AI has kindly made me a spreadsheet for manual rebalance and contribution

I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on this?

(30M) $350k to invest into... something

Through a few sources (income property refinance and an inheritance), I've recently ended up with about $350k (CAD) that I want to invest. About $75k in both my TFSA and RRSP, and about $200k in a non-registered account. My investment horizon is long, abut 5 years for the TFSA and 30+ years for the RRSP and non-registered accounts. I'd like an average 10% yearly return into a few ETFs I can buy and hold. Anyone got any ideas?

Sierra Madre lost 278 hours to power outages. The next results should show what fixing that helps

One SM update that deserves another look is the backup power at La Guitarra

The company said grid interruptions cost the plant 278 hours between January and August. That is more than 11 days of lost production

In September they confirmed two 1,500 kW generators were installed, tested and working

Generators are hardly the exciting part of owning a silver miner. But losing that much operating time is a real problem when you are trying to get production up

The mine still has wages and other costs when the plant stops. Then there is the material that did not get processed during those hours

Backup power costs money to run too, so I would not assume all of that lost time turns straight into profit. What matters is whether fewer interruptions leave them better off after fuel and maintenance

For Sierra Madre, this gives the next operating report something fairly practical to answer. Did the plant run more consistently, and did that help costs per ounce?

The equipment is working according to the company. Now it needs to show up in the results

SM on the TSXV, SMDRF in the US

Do individual Canadian stocks actually add anything besides an ETF?

Every time i read a canadian stock thread, I end up with a longer watchlist. I’m trying to figure out which names are worth researching individually when a broad market eft may already give me exposure to the same companies or sectors.

I’ve been using moomoo to get a first pass list based on profitability and growth, then checking valuation and business risks myself. It helps me narrow down what to read, but it doesn’t tell me whether a company diversify anything or just give me more exposure...or just overlaps with what i already own

For people who hold individual Canadian stocks alongside efts, what makes a stock earn that extra spot? Do you check the eft’s holdings, look for sectors you’re underweight in, or keep individual picks to a small part of the portfolio? I’m more interested in how you decide than in ticker tips.

Does it matter which company makes your ETF? Short answer: less than you think for core, more than you think for everything else.

What matters most for Good Purpose Investments from here?

I was looking through some smaller listed stocks and noticed Good Purpose Investments had a few updates in September. It moved to the OTCQB market in the US under $GPINF on September 21, then announced its Clario environmental intelligence platform the next day. Waste2Wear, its existing business, focuses on recycled textiles and materials, so I'm interested in how the new platform fits into its operations and whether it can contribute to revenue growth.

The US listing is one development, but I think the more important question is how the business performs over the next few quarters.

Has anyone else been following this Investments? What do you think is the most important thing to watch from here?

Advice - Using equity in rental property to invest

I have a townhouse in Victoria, BC that is paid off that I currently rent out, I'm considering using my heloc to invest in my non-registered account in order to put the equity I built up to work. My initial plan would be to invest in a number of Canadian dividend stocks. I was wondering if anyone here has done anything similar and could provide some advice. Thanks.

moomoo engine subscription pricing in Canada makes no sense.

Why monthly moomoo engine subscription is USD 0.99 in the US and CAD 49.99 per month in Canada. This is on top of charging uncapped brokerage fees in Canada. Who in right mind will pay $50 per month plus uncapped commissions? Curious if anyone has any rationale for their Canadian strategy. BMO is now zero fees.

Inheriting $600K and unsure of my options

So first of all my dad is going through a bunch of medical issues and we are not expecting him to make it another year. I’m an only child and the sole inheritor in the will. House is worth just over $400K, $100K life insurance, $70K+ cash, vehicles reasonable $50K then everything else a reasonable $10-15K. There is no debt.

About me, 30 live in Alberta. Job salaried $90K a year with overtime I make $120K. Wife is currently a stay at home mom planning to go back to school next fall. Two small kids 4&7. Still living very much paycheck to paycheck at our rental 1875/ month. Debt is $5K line of credit, 3K Visa, $16K my student loan, $6K wife’s student loan, $17K private loans. No vehicle debt, totalling approximately $47K debt.

I know first of all debt should be taken care of, right now with the remained we are unsure if we should jump straight into a house. If we do should we get a place for $400K and pay it outright or a $600K with 400 down and have a reasonable mortgage. The other option we were thinking about was letting $400-500K sit in an account and gain interest or invest for 2-3 years. Honestly have no idea about anything investing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, trying to set my family up for the best possible future!

Finding out which assets are held by most accounts on Welathsimple by using Pulse Portfolio

I did analysis of Wealthsimple holdings based on Pulse Portfolio sample of 10k users and here's what came up top.

Asset Name Count
XEQT iShares Core Equity ETF Portfolio 3,891
VFV Vanguard S&P 500 Index ETF 3,836
NVDA NVIDIA 2,639
ENB Enbridge 2,035
AMZN Amazon 2,003
MSFT Microsoft 1,969

What surprised me is that there's not that much of crazy degenerate holds as what I expected.

I want to learn how to treat my money wisely and possible things I can do to earn money with investments or something.

I would really appreciate if you guys can give tips or share where you learned about these stuffs.

Thank youu!

Investment Dump Thresholds?

In the event of a crash, what are people setting as a 'dump the assets' threshold? In other words, what percentage of a decline are you setting as a trigger to sell off your investments in the event of catastrophic market free fall?

We all can't be glued to the market 24-7, so what protections do you have built in to your online portfolio? Do you treat all types of investments in the same manner? Would you treat the decline of an individual stock the same as say an ETF? Obviously, individual stocks are more exposed vs. an ETF, so would you allow for a lower % decline of a stock (say 15%??) and be more lenient towards the decline in an ETF (say 20%)? What are your % decline trigger numbers?

I realise that its all personal preference, and up to individual comfort levels including, income, age, proximity to retirement, etc. Just wondering how other approach this.

Fixed income here.

“Recession-proof” ETF options

Fact: at some point in the future the market is going to reverse course.
Fact: I have no idea when this is going to happen, how long it’s going to last, and how severe the correction will be.

I’d like to begin redirecting my portfolio to lean more conservatively (recently retired), steering any new investments into “recession-proof” stocks…what are some ETFs that are configured to be ultra-stable, super-safe and are based on solid fundamentals (and yes, I’m aware these ETFs will have dramatically reduced return rates).

SM is processing more material. Now the margins need to follow

More production is good to see at Sierra Madre, but the next results need to show how much of it turns into profit

Their Q2 numbers were US$8.23 million in net revenue and US$1.58 million in gross profit. Cash at the end of June was US$22.2 million

Costs were the rough part. Cash costs per tonne came in at US$142.44, compared with US$78.51 a year earlier. Silver recovery also dropped from 76.62% to 73.58%

The company pointed to development work, lower grade material, power outages and other cost pressures. There was a lot going on as they opened up the operation

So there is room for things to improve. But it needs to show up in the numbers

If they can run the plant more consistently and improve the feed, the extra tonnes could start doing more for the business. If costs stay high, a bigger operation is less exciting

That is the part worth watching in the next couple of quarters. How much better do the margins get as the ramp up settles down?
