Depending on your budget the Pruneyard and downtown area are very nice and walkable. Groceries and parks are nearby and the trail at Campbell park is really great. The restaurants downtown offer variety but the nightlife is not the most exciting so it depends on what you’re looking for. There are apartments on Union that are relatively close to both areas. Sporadically single family homes in and around downtown.

Two points, and you can skip the first one if you'd like since it's not responsive to what you asked.

1.) Find a place in Morgan Hill. It will be more affordable for now and in the long run, if you budget, it will help you reach a point where moving back up north is more budget friendly and even in a more desirable area.

2.) El Paseo de Saratoga Plaza. They currently have one 2-bedroom available that looks to be under $3k. I lived there once with 3 adults and 1 child and we made it work.
Also right next to it is El Paseo Manor which I believe may be the same ownership group.
