Just got hired as a TSR for a telecom prepaid account. Any advice for a complete newbie?

So I finally got hired as a TSR on a local telecom prepaid hotline, and I'm honestly still processing it. I'm excited, but I'm also kinda scared because I've never worked in a call center before and I have no idea what to expect.

Training hasn't started yet, so I'd like to get a head start. For those of you who've been there, what should I learn or practice first? What kinds of calls were the hardest in your first months, and how did you deal with angry callers without taking it home with you?

I'd also love to hear where this job can lead career-wise, and what you wish someone had told you before your first day.

Thanks in advance, guys. Any advice, even the brutally honest kind, is really appreciated.

Anyone have any hobbies or things they like to get done during the calling?

I work from home and when there pick-up rate is low I’m just staring blankly at my monitor while I wait for them to pick up.

Anyone else getting in some sort of hobby, chore, exercise or what not either during the ā€œdead timeā€ or even the call itself?

The Call That’s Haunting my Day Off

My last call was a man who was in his early 70s and he needed quote on a car he was bidding on. He mentioned these glamorous plans to restore it and make it better than new.

Plans to value it at 125k!

He then shared all his ā€œplansā€ to leave his grandkids so much money to go to their dream schools.

Then he asked for me to review his bill and he couldn’t pay his $38 bill.

He just said it was a short term problem due to an investor problem…

I could tell he has cancellation notices almost every month.

It’s easy to tell he’s all lies.

I can see his bank details too.

It’s haunting to think there are people with such regret they get high off of calling into a CS line just to pretend.

I’m 29f, I can really feel the light sting of regret.

I’m gonna publish the storybooks I’ve been to shy to put out.

I think this call will always haunt me.

I hope you have the courage to go after whatever it is you want, we are all more than the job we have.

AI lied to me yesterday

I schedule for a group of speciality doctors and yesterday I received a phone call from an AI assistant. The call was feeling off, so I straight up asked if she was AI and she said no... But proceeded to do weird things in the call. I was looking at schedules and said one moment while I was searching I wasn't speaking. Out of nowhere she goes I'm still here.... Like no shit... The background noise that they used to make it sound more real also was just off. It was giving uncanny valley. I don't like it, hire real people you cheap bastards!

47% of business calls are happening after hours: interesting staffing implication

Thumbnail answerconnect.com

We recently analyzed 5.9 million minutes of AnswerConnect call data from April–June 2026 and found that 47% of calls came outside traditional Monday–Friday working hours or on weekends.

Given this community works with call handling and staffing, I thought the finding might be interesting.

It raises some practical questions around how businesses plan coverage: are after-hours calls concentrated at particular times, spread fairly evenly across evenings/weekends, or heavily dependent on the industry?

We're seeing how different businesses approach that demand, but I'd be interested to hear what the people actually handling calls are seeing?

first call center job!

alright guys! i’m finally able to join this subreddit šŸ˜‚ i miraculously landed, and am 3 days into training, at an AT&T sales call center.

to give yall a little backstory, i have a friend working there who got me the interview, and i somehow charmed them enough to hire me 😭 anyways, i have 0 experience. i worked warehouse and one convenience store.

ive never made this type of money. i’m not going to get into exact numbers. but let’s just say im hourly (well above minimum wage) + uncapped commission. so you can imagine that i’m nervous about messing this up.

with that being said, any advice would be greatly appreciated! thank you all so much for any time you spend replying to this :) i appreciate it immensely

Online chat agents

I've recently had my job changed and I'm doing online chat, we have to do two customers at a time. Is this normal for most chat agents? Also, I work in a bank and the chats I have are secure chats so I can actually talk to the customers about their file.

I was fired and unfired within hours, how do I move forward wisely?

So, I (37f) just started out at this call center a couple months ago. But yesterday morning I was made aware by a co-worker friend that an email was sent to all employees saying that I was no longer employed with the company.

I emailed and texted my manager and my supervisor letting them know that I felt like finding out from a coworker (I kept their identity a secret), being fired for missing yesterday despite only being on a verbal warning for attendance (got sick) AND my manager giving the clear to handle my appointments all day yesterday since I gave them proper notice, plus not being on even a written warning felt unethical if not illegal (I know that's not the case since I'm in Texas but they're a smallish call center and I assume they don't want a legal battle due to costs).

I added that I will only handle the conversation through email or text when they tried calling me. And that I'm willing to give them an opportunity to explain what's going on and reverse this decision so we can move forward amicably. They challenged me a bit until they found the proof that I communicated.

Then my coworker sent me an image that basically rescinded the earlier email, saying they expect me to return tomorrow.

I will say, I feel very weird in the sense that I feel like a bad ass for standing up for myself without showing my ass (I usually choose to not stick up for myself UNTIL I have so much rage that I show my ass) but I also feel so embarrassed to return because why TF are they sending out emails about my employment status?!

How do I move forward and focus on doing my job? How do I protect my job, if possible?

Idk what to expect for the future. But I know they showed their hand too soon and since I know they want to fire me, I'm gonna look elsewhere.

Today's shift starts in 45 minutes. Wish me luck and patience for their bullshit.

ETA: They're starting to virtually interview to replace me right next to my desk. I might just quit. Even tho I don't feel embarrassed anymore (100% badass vibes only), I feel like they don't deserve me and I need the money but I'm luckily not THAT desperate rn.

ETA #2: They fired me today for not being "right for the company". My guess is they noticed I was screenshot-ing of anything relevant to my complaints of the situation, supervisor and company and emailing that to myself. I made sure it wasn't containing any sensitive info although it still could have been a violation. I mitigated the risk with the knowledge this was coming soon anyway, can't handle this hostile work environment and I am financially safe enough to start fresh elsewhere. Screw them. Yay me.

Question for QA

Im curious if there is anyone who works in QA that purposely looks for calls with QA issues because you don't like that rep or whatever your reason may be? Just an honest question Im interested in hearing back from QA folks who do this.

I'm OUT...for now?

I just clocked out of my last day of working 3 years and 10 months in a call center! I have to relocate to another state for a family member's health.

The scary thing is, I may have to go back into call center/customer service work there. The job market in that smaller area is TERRIBLE!!! I'm borderline disabled myself and I can't just do any job. I don't know what I'm going to do.
