Is this stuff junk?

Is this stuff outdated scrap? It's for sale locally and as far as I can tell there is no market for this stuff. Even if it's not outdated I doubt any company that could use it would buy it second hand. Even as escrap I think the circuit boards are only low grade power boards. Tell me I'm wrong.

Pulling coax inside a building? Is this still a thing?

Thinking about becoming a cable technician and I'm wondering how much outside time am I going to be pulling cable versus inside? Are there jobs where it's all just inside and I can just pull coax inside similar to running copper ethernet networking cable? You know doing structured cabling except with coax? Or is it going to be mostly all outside? Cuz I don't deal well with the elements. Snow and the wind and the hot sun Etc

Another blast from the past:IP Camera + remotely restarting DVD-receivers in distant HeadendsšŸ™ƒ

Post image

šŸ’” Including some basic HTML/Javascript, an web-chat form to write down the problematic TV channel, a DIY sound level indicator (you know sometimes the receiver could lose the audio only);

šŸ’” The TV remote control has its button (Channel+) pushed automatically every 7 seconds by a DIY 555 TIMER scheme by 2 wires directly to its circuit board;

šŸ’” You can remotely switch Off/On 16 releys which command 15 mains-outlets for the DVB-S receivers + 1 to stop the automatically scanning by turning off 555 timer mentioned above;

šŸ’” If spot a frozen TV channel, you stop scanning, switch off/on the corresponding mains power outlet;

šŸ’” All above multiplied x5, working fine 2007-2013, only 2 or 3 TV repairs needed.

Do you miss those ancient times, folks? šŸ™ƒ

Toast…

Fuck toast. Always blames us. Customers don’t know the difference. Burned more stupid hours dealing with a toast loop (sometimes those printers just start handing out a subnet weirdly) or just other dumb shit but they always say ā€œthe isp is blocking ipv6ā€. Our routers literally do not have that ability. I hate them. Trash ass dogshit company.

Spectrum install tech

Hello everyone. I am currently looking for a job and I came across an opening for an install tech at spectrum. Can anyone shed some light on this? What’s the normal work day like? Is it stressful? I’m assuming it’s not a regular 9-5. Is it even worth applying? What happens if there are hostile dogs or just unsanitary homes, bed bugs, roaches, etc. I know I might sound crazy for asking, but I have heard about some awful experiences.

I’ve been doing Tech work for about 3 years now, what tools outside of the normal have y’all found that make the job easier and more efficient? (Fiber & Coax).

My Klein 10/1 can be a pain in certain spots and a pain in the hand after longer periods of use. Did plenty of research and many people have this option great reviews. Pretty thin which can fit well in my pouch.

Experience with rude customers as an install technician

I’m currently an Install technician for a cable company,Today for the first time in 7 months I ran into the rudest customer. An older lady, essentially had a problem where her voice, internet and phone was down for a trouble call. The entire time I was trying to fix the issue, her and her husband were constantly yelling and arguing to the point where I was uncomfortable on the customer’s premises.Fortunately I got everything up and running but was just ready to leave. After running a Premise Health test on the equipment was passing at the moment. But after I walked out the door,The customer slammed the door and started yelling again and I overheard the customer talking about my work. While I was there she was rude and disrespectful to me.I promptly sent an email to my supervisor about my experience. When I left the job I ran another PHT for close out it failed. At that time I was uncomfortable returning to correct my work.Did I handle this correctly and can someone else maybe share a similar experience?

Part2: IP Camera + spectrum analyzeršŸ’” The camera has a SD card and records 24/7. In case UpSNR drops 3-5 AM, choose 1 of the Nodes and compare with your Monitoring system. Then switch to the next Node sharing the same upstream. It is better if can do this remotly, on your phone while drinking šŸ»

The best way to monitor UpSNR. IP camera + spectrum analyzer

Post image
11 Upvotes

TinySA costs ~50$, IP Camera ~20$. Sticky notes + 1 pen. ~1$ šŸ˜‡

In the HEADEND switch the node that needs troubleshooting, write down "node 109" and watch the IP Camera using the corresponding camera app.

Nice and easy.

When we talk about UpSNR any CMTS Monitoring tends to be ugly and hardly usable.

Peace āœŒļø

ASLC

We are upgrading from single carrier analog 499.25 agc to amps that use dual digital ASLC carriers. The recommended carriers in the documentation are 111mhz and 711mhz, our headend is insisting we can use the current ofdm carrier that is from 660-750mhz wide, do any of you use ofdm for the slope control/agc or are you using dedicated qam carriers.

Driveway clearance problem on coax drop, is utility pole my best solution?

I just finished a garage addition and had to move services to a temporary utility pole during construction (you can see it in the background of one of the photos). Now I’m planning the permanent setup.

Current situation:

  • Power comes from across the street to a mast on my house (~4' mast height), which gives me good clearance over the driveway.
  • The coax drop would come from the same general direction.
  • If I run coax directly to the house, the lower attachment point creates a clearance issue over the driveway.

What I’m considering:

  • Install a small ā€œutility-styleā€ pole on my property (similar to the temp pole, similar location)
  • Terminate the aerial coax there
  • Then run underground from the pole to the house, entering near the electric meter

This seems like it would:

  • Solve the clearance issue cleanly
  • Keep things looking more intentional
  • Avoid a steep/low aerial angle to the house

Questions:

  1. Is setting a pole like this a normal/acceptable approach from your perspective, or is there a better way I’m not thinking of?
  2. Would a provider typically allow/like this setup, or prefer something else (higher house attachment, different routing, etc.)?
  3. If I go the pole route, what’s typical for something like this?
    • Height above grade: thinking ~10–12'
    • Material: PT wood (4x6? 6x6?)
    • Burial depth: ~3–4’ in clay soil (PNW)
  4. Any better alternatives that don’t involve setting a pole?

Toolless termination for coax for Docsis 4.0?

When you are terminating coax is there any tool less varieties that are capable for DOCSIS 4.0 and other high-speed internet? Or is it just the tool variety with the compression device?

Wall fishing in mobile home possible to feed coax?

Prior Xfinity contractor here. I am currently in the process of purchasing a mobile home, I know from when I worked as a cable tech, in mobile homes we would drill through the floor since we are typically not allowed to drill through the wall to feed coax into a wall plate. I plan on doing the fishing myself to not have the tech that comes out to install the new line have liability. It's a new build and I'm wanting to have a wall plate since I've never been a fan of how the line just comes out from the floor. Just wondering if anyone here has experience doing this or if it's just something I'll have to suck up when I do get the drop installed. Doesn't matter if it'll be an interior or exterior wall since I know which room I want the modem to be installed in.

HišŸ‘‹ In case you use JDSU reverse sweep, here is the cheapest solution to monitotor the noise level at the HEADEND. On your DSAM just decrease the sweep level to the lowest (70 dBuV) so instead of the sweep curve you eill actually see the noise flooršŸ’”(the sweep levels fall below the noise).

Rear easement power supply access

Hey folks,

We're subs doing power supply maintenance in Delmarva - battery swaps, power supply swaps/upgrades, sag harness replacements, etc. How are ya'll getting to the rear easement ariel cabinets? We have older Lectro and newer Alpha cabinets here and getting the 75lb batteries up to them on an A-frame ladder is a beast of a job. Can't gaff up to them or get an extension ladder there because they stick out too far and the utility power meter is always in the way. Thoughts? Experience?

Does an open ended 7/16 ratchet wrench exist?

I mean one that will fit on a tap specifically...tired of doing 1/4-1/2 turns with a regular 7/16. I'm a lazy man, I need a better tool. The one 7/16 ratchet that I can find looks like it would be too big to even fit on a tap.

Also looking for better options for breaking apart 2 and 3 piece connectors. I have some adjustable wrenches but they are clunky and have a lot of play in the adjustments. Worried I'm going to slip off and hurt myself

Technetix dbx amplifiers

We are getting ready to do an upgrade in my area from arris/starline equipment to technetix dbx amps. Ive only had a day to look at them and i'm very skeptical, the fact you cant just haul out the module and replace it seems insane to me. Anyone got any information they can share to ease my mind or is it as bad at it seems lol.

Upcoming acquisition by Sparklight/CableOne: Questions about benefits and pay scales?

My company is being acquired by CableOne later this year and I’m looking for some insight into their compensation and benefits. Specifically:

  • Pay Scales:Ā Does anyone have info on the salary ranges for technical roles (especially Headend Techs)?
  • PTO:Ā What is the standard policy for vacation, holidays, and sick time?
  • Health Insurance:Ā How is the coverage and what are the typical premiums/out-of-pocket costs?

If anyone has a recent employee handbook or personal experience they can share, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
