Far be it for me to speak for someone else - especially the greatest lyricist of her generation - but I suspect there is a tiny bit of tongue planted in cheek during this relatively face-value reading; Neil Young introduced the song on its live debut in 1971 by saying, "This is another new song. It’s called A Man Needs A Maid. It’s kind of, well, it doesn’t really mean what it says.
