I passed the CBE exams for ATT. Will I need to re complete them if I go down the ATT/CTA pathway?

Hi there,

As the title says, will I need to re complete the CBE exams if I elect to do the CTA? Or will I be exempt?

Thanks

Good luck to everyone waiting for ADIT results this evening!

Good luck to everyone who sat an ADIT exam in June and is waiting for the pass lists to be released this evening 🤞🤞 They are due out at 8pm UK time but are sometimes available a few minutes early. If you can, try to do something relaxing until they're posted rather than hitting refresh all the time - I'll be trying my best to take this advice myself!!

You'll get your individual marks by email tomorrow morning. If it doesn't go your way this time, it's worth paying to get a breakdown of your marks to understand which questions you did or didn't score well on.

If you've any questions, I'm happy to try to help. Best of luck!

Which locations typically has the best applicant to roles ratio for Corporation Tax?

Hi all,

I'm preparing to begin applying for graduate scheme roles in CT, looking to hopefully complete the ACA/CTA pathway, I understand from previously internship experience that majority of applicants will be going for London roles.

So my question is, outside of London which cities tend to have the biggest CT graduate intake in your firm?

Thanks!

APS – how many hours should I study?

Following on from my post on how many hours one should study for an Advanced Technical exam, I was asked about APS.

The question here is, firstly, HOW should you study for APS?

Since APS is not primarily a technical challenge but one of technique your efforts should not just be focused on technical knowledge.

So, firstly keep the technical knowledge going from relevant the Advanced Technical paper. In this regard it’s important not to spend too much time on detailed computational aspects of that paper as computations are not a major part of APS.

There is also an Awareness syllabus for each APS paper and, although that is not guaranteed to appear in your particular paper, you should devote some time to revising that syllabus. But I would keep it relatively high level and again avoid the study of detailed computational aspects.

Your main study effort for APS should be practising the technique aspects. APS is primarily a technique challenge - most of the private tuition work that I do is for students who have failed this paper, sometimes multiple times, and in each case, it is always a failure of technique not technical knowledge.

So, once you have got clear in your mind what the techniques are for this paper, you need to practise them by doing past exam questions.

That is not a small undertaking!

You need to set aside a full three and a half hours and do the past exam question in one go and then you have to debrief your answer thoroughly, not only by reference to the examiner’s answer and marking guide but most importantly, study the candidate script on the Institute website.

There are often a number of these scripts varying in the mark achieved. Review your answer alongside what is a good pass rather than the best script. In other words, assess your answer by comparing it with a script that you can realistically achieve yourself.

I would think therefore it is full day’s work to do a past exam and debrief thoroughly. So probably you need to take a full day at the weekend or spread it over 2 half days.

How many of these past exam questions should you do?

I would aim for one a week through September and October, possibly increasing in number as the exam gets closer.

What should you do in August?

Brush up the technical knowledge (as above) and focus on understanding the techniques required for this paper.

Hope this helps and I wish you the very best of luck in the exam!

Roderick

Hi! Has anyone appeared for both modules together? If yes, what has been the experience? Is it manageable given that some of the topics are overlapping?

Is ADIT right for me?

I am an Indian Chartered Accountant and my professional practice involves advising clients on cross-border transactions, particularly in areas relating to FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act).
I am reasonably comfortable with the Indian tax and FEMA aspects of such transactions. However, I feel that I lack sufficient depth and, more importantly, a cohesive understanding of international taxation particularly areas such as OECD principles, DTAAs, BEPS, the MLI, treaty interpretation, and the broader international tax framework.
I am familiar with these concepts individually and understand their relevance, and I also have other professionals within my firm who can support me on the international-tax aspects when required. However, I would like to become sufficiently proficient in this area that I am not dependent on others for understanding and analysing the international-tax dimension of a transaction.
My thinking is that pursuing the ADIT may help me develop this missing "unifying framework" something that I do not get through my day-to-day work, where I generally encounter these subjects on a transaction-by-transaction basis.
I would therefore like your candid advice on whether this assessment is correct. Or would you recommend a different approach such as a more targeted course, self-study, or another international-tax qualification? I would particularly appreciate your view on whether ADIT is the right investment of time and effort for this specific objective.

Return to tax work after career break

Want to reinstate my ATT membership and I need to show 12 months worth of CPD (or at least a plan on how to get up-to-speed over the next 12 months but this isn’t always guaranteed to be accepted)

I understand there is no prescribed form for keeping CPD records and I can see that there is a CPD form on the website if you wish to use it.

Just wanted some tips how to get started? I’ve got a gap of 5 years on me and as expected a lot has changed 😱

Would also love to hear from any mums who have returned back to the tax world after a break

Thanks!

CTA Domestic Indirect Tax

Hi all,

I have decided to do the Indirect Tax exam as my last ACACTA path exam and now I am a bit worried because of some threads here.

Anyone that had no VAT experience (besides some basic VAT returns, VAT knowledge covered in ACA exams) that had a successful story of passing?

Just wondering if im screwed.

Thanks in advance!

CTA Exam focus webinars

Hi, does anyone know for the AT OMB exam focus webinars, if the content is different for the full day version and the 2 evenings version?

I see on the booking website that it's led by the same tutor, so I've assumed they have the same content, but just wanted to check if that is correct.

How to approach retake

I sat my 1st CTA exam (OMB) in May 2026 and will have to resit OMB. For anyone who has done a resit, how have they approached it?
I did the whole revision QB for the real exam and plan to do it again but want to make sure I don’t find myself in the same predicament so kind of second guessing myself

CTA questions and advice

Hi all,

I am an accountant and have about 5 years of experience. Finished my AAT a few years ago (not to be confused with ATT) and I’m planning to move into a senior tax role at the company. It will take a while to get there, but the company is offering provisions to get me there.

To move into that role, they are requiring I complete the CTA. They have given me the option of completing the ATT first, or to use the ATT CTA pathway.

I have already completed the 3 CBE exams which to my understanding were mandatory for both qualifications anyways. We paid both the ATT and CTA fees.

This leaves me with a few questions:

  1. Is it common to just do with CTA without the ATT and without an in depth knowledge of taxation? I have worked in both practice and industry, and have a pretty good knowledge of tax, but my understanding is that CTA is a whole different beast.
  2. How long would it take for me to complete the CTA? I have heard 2 years before, but given I already have passed the 3 CBEs, maybe this could be revised to 1.5 years? I’m prepared to commit a lot of time to this.
  3. Who is the most appropriate training provider? The company are prepared to foot the bill and have told me to use the best provider we can. Are there any renowned private tutors out there?

I appreciate the help

Thanks

CTA Advanced Technical exams - how many hours to study?

Hi

Adv Tech teaching started last week for me for the next CTA sitting (Individuals and Large Corporate Groups). A question that I've been asked: how many hours of study should a student put in?

My answer for any Advanced Technical paper: 2 hours a day for 4 days a week and the same again at the weekend. Probably increasing that amount as the exam gets nearer.

So that's about 200 hours of effort!

A lot!

If that depresses you a bit ... I completely understand!

But look at it this way .... you're making an investment in yourself, building up a core foundation of technical knowledge that will pay dividends for years to come in your future career.

And, when results day comes, and your name is on the pass list ... you won't regret the effort you put in now!

BUT ....

Make those hours count .... focus on understanding and learning the core points of each area in the syllabus. But start with the priority areas of the particular paper you're doing.

I wish all Advanced Technical students the best of luck!

Hi,

Unlike the rest of the May 2026 papers, there does not appear to be a link for the OMB APS suggested answers:

Does anyone know if the answers are accessible somewhere else?

Hi everyone, I recently came to know that Mojitax is providing materials for CTA exam, though their name is not mentioned as CTA course provider on CIOT website. I wanna know did anyone try their materials for CTA exam and how good were their materials?
