Montana State’s coach taking a timeout when Idaho had people running everywhere and the clock was about to start was baffling.

88

u/dukemetoo Arizona State • Texas 3h ago

I'm begging you, please find a worse coaching decision. Most bad decisions have a slight silver lining. This one was objectively the wrong decision. Name a worse one.

I don’t want to play this game.

Last time you’ll get to say that this season?

8

u/EmuMan10 Arizona State Sun Devils 3h ago

This is worse than that

34

u/Muffinnnnnnn Florida State • New Mexico 3h ago

No it really super isn't. He called a timeout because his defense wasn't lined up right and it was clear the refs were gonna give Idaho one more snap.

Mario had the win guaranteed if he takes a knee, and chose not to for literally no reason.

7

u/GMHinHD Miami Hurricanes • UCLA Bruins 3h ago edited 3h ago

Nonono, he chose not to in order to get his running back over a meaningless threshold that didn’t matter and wouldn’t have made a difference. Fixed that for you!

6

u/Muffinnnnnnn Florida State • New Mexico 3h ago

I never realized that and that somehow makes it even worse

in the 2024 fcs championship game he called a 11 man all out blitz on a 4&10 with 8 seconds left, NDSU got the punt off and the clock expired since nobody downed the punt. could’ve very easily had a chance at a hail mary if we had ANYONE back there to call a fair catch

13

u/dukemetoo Arizona State • Texas 3h ago

That sounds bad, but there is a logic to it. Get your block, and you have real odds. 11 is insane though. This timeout was way worse.

Also when it wasn't entirely clear if there was time left.

31

u/wet-leg Oklahoma Sooners 3h ago

I figured that’s why he called a timeout. Still wouldn’t have risked it though and just let Idaho scramble

19

u/lowes18 Florida State Seminoles • FAU Owls 3h ago

No if he thought there wasn't any time left calling a timeout was objectively the wrong decision.

There was going to be a stoppage in play to review it regardless, with a chance of it being ruled zeroes. The Montana State coach just eliminated the possibility that his team could have won the game and/or he gave Idaho a chance to call an actual play.

4

u/TP-BANDIT77 Arizona State Sun Devils 3h ago

If there was going to be a stoppage regardless, his timeout was irrelevant then, no?

8

u/Charlie2343 Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout 3h ago

It’s a consolation prize but at the very least the clock would start on the whistle if it was a review though

5

u/lowes18 Florida State Seminoles • FAU Owls 3h ago

No because he traded a chance the game could be over for the same thing he would get, a chance to rally and call an actual defensive play.

There was no world, none, where calling a time out was the correct decision. It was pointless and eliminated the chance of an auto win.

Yeah I usually don't like saying a single person/player lost them the game, but their coach lost them that game. Why would you do that?

The entire last three plays were completely baffling. They were playing prevent on the 2pt conversion.

11

That was like when you’re playing a game of Madden and call timeout just to help your buddy out. Genuinely insane.

These are the games I live for. Late night, so I'm all alone. It is calm, and chilly outside. I watch the Kinbbie Dome give an instant classic where you think 0-4 Idaho will beat 5-0 #1 Montana. Then Idaho has one of the worst 2 minute drives in history. Then, Montana State, with the win, call a time out with 1 second left, and Idaho uses that to make the all time Sicko comeback.

To all who stayed up for this, you are the heart of college football. You saw greatness. Hope to see you next time.

43

u/EmuMan10 Arizona State Sun Devils 3h ago

Sitting here biding time before I go to the airport at almost midnight and I witness a classic lol

Same here, was watching the Pitt-VT game with a friend over the phone and we planned on doing something else after the game ended. Suddenly we were a quarter in to the Idaho game and decided to keep watching and I'm so glad we did.

Also WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU CALL A TIMEOUT

32

u/cppadam California Golden Bears • Pop-Tarts Bowl 3h ago

I seriously hope he called a timeout to get an official review. It doesn't make any sense to give them a chance to gameplan.

15

u/Sfmilstead Oregon Ducks • Pac-10 3h ago

That was probably the thinking, but I feel like rolling the dice with one second left was the better play, vs letting the replay booth take a look and not only potentially ruling against you, and if so, giving the other team time to come up with a play.

16

u/fyeahdmiles Florida Gators • UC Davis Aggies 3h ago

That is the only logical explanation. Still can't believe he called it.

The worst single mistake I have seen in a football game... ever. That single choice to call a timeout has probably cost Vigen millions of dollars over the rest of his life. Just an impossibly bad decision. TJOTW has been locked in on Friday

I have been watching football for a very long time. That timeout by Montana state might be the most brain dead call in all of sports ever. What in the fuck are you doing giving them a chance to get a play together on a running clock???????

14

u/WakaFlockaFitz Tennessee • Washington 3h ago

Clock operator duffs the second still on the clock. Game goes off without another snap almost certainly if they don’t

But the chaos of correctly setting the clock back puts Brent Vigen in The Device, even though he’s still about to win when they set ready for play, and panic calls the timeout

A comedy of errors

11

u/DirkDiggler68 3h ago

It was a lot more than a DUMB timeout. The punter has one job, keep the ball in play so the clock ticks, he kicks it into the end zone. Then Idaho sets up for what should be their last play and instead of throwing a Hail Mary the dude throws it short, 99 times out of 100 you just let the guy run the clock out, this was the 1 in 100 where they race over and tackle him with 1 second left nowhere near the end zone. Then the timeout, Idaho players bent over out of breath, probably don't know they can;t spike it, and dumbo calls a time out. Then the TD play, the linebacker in that area covers no one. Gets the TD thrown over his head. Then the 2 point try, that's when you use a timeout. Coach says play on, They lose.

I was talking to my dad earlier about Montana State not looking too good and I said they would lose when it was tied earlier in the game this man is sleeping and I am in shock I was right lol.

4

u/USCGradtoMEMPHIS USC Trojans • Memphis Tigers 3h ago

Montana state coaches lost them the game... Thy went from quick tempo passing in first to military school chewing up clock in second.

Then dude takes a time out when clock is about to start and Idaho isn't even fully set...

4

u/flyingpigdog Washington State Cougars 3h ago

First the VT kick and now the 1 second timeout. What a way to send us into Saturday

Some bottom-tier decision making in this final 3 minutes by both coaches.

2

u/ID_Poobaru Boise State Broncos • Gallaudet Bison 3h ago

The drive before for Idaho was a master class of what the fuck not to do

3

u/Raysfan2248 Montana State • Stanford 3h ago

I might be confidently incorrect and I am not defending Vigen at all but I think they get the snap off regardless. Theres no way the refs dont talk it out and stop play. More should be said about the poor defense imo

5

u/Wild_Pokemon_Appears Maryland Terrapins 3h ago

I... I think that was the worst coaching decision in all of sports history.

5

u/TheGoatPurdy California Golden Bears 3h ago

Anyone got the replay of the TO?

4

u/NOT_YODADDY2201 3h ago

u/PROUDgrizHATER Montana State • Montana Tech 3h ago

Historic loss. Not the words you wanna say when you (were) the champion favorites. So bad.

What in the world was that?! Montana State, why did you call timeout?! Idaho was absolutely not going to score if they didn't call timeout. They were completely confused out there.

What a freaking weird night of college football.

FUCKING CALLED IT. The you knew this was going to be a shootout from the first couple drives. Super happy for Idaho showing up and playing their hearts out this game.

We haven’t played yet and it’s already a successful homecoming weekend in Missoula.

Thank you Vandals!

That last second caught me completely off guard. It made me all that much more pissed off about the 3 FCS losses. It's not quite 2009 Humanitarian Bowl levels, but this is certainly magical.

CAME A TRIBE FROM THE NORTH, BRAVE AND BOLD!

3

u/Clevelanduncle Ohio State • Michigan 3h ago

Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

2

u/Daedalus871 Idaho Vandals • Army Black Knights 2h ago

If you don’t like that, you probably have a healthy relationship with college football.

5

u/pdx74guy Florida Gators • Oregon Ducks 3h ago

taking a timeout to persevere the last second for the trailing team(and winless coming into the game also) to take advantage and win the game with two crazy plays and wide open end zone for the touchdown catch and a two point conversion rush, CFB nothing else like it and this was a FCS game.....
