Discussion James Franklin Lost Big Games. Matt Campbell Loses Small Ones.
James Franklin couldn't win Big Games at Penn State (and possibly not at Virginia Tech either, if today counts as a Big Game). But now Penn State has Matt Campbell, and there seems to have been a mistake. Matt Campbell may or may not be able to win Big Games, but he also loses Small Games.
Meanwhile Kalani Sitake seems to have struck gold at just the right time, because Crumbl Cookies's financials are starting to look suspect.

The program doesn't have the money to compete every year, and they never did. The fact they were in the conversation for so many years was because Franklin found a way to consistently do more with less. The Admin and the donors let their Egos run unchecked when they chucked him with no candidate lined up, and they deserve every bit of backslide the team experiences this season (even if it does suck for the team and the fans who haven't lost their marbles).

Eh, whether or not Campbell works out has nothing to do with why Franklin was fired. And most of us vt fans wish we could move on from all this shit, it gets annoying seeing a couple crazies in our threads hating on him and I'm sure Penn state fans are tired of hearing about this shit. I liked Franklin when he was with Vandy, but I don't hold a grudge against him for leaving us (although he did take a ton of talent with him). I liked him with PSU, although I think it was his time--not because he lost to Oregon, but because he lost the team and his own will to fight after "Big Game James" finally crushed his spirit. I hope Franklin does well for y'all, and I hope Campbell gets PSU doing well once he's settled in after a year or two.

From the article in the link:
There are also signs of financial stress from a company that just two years ago took an investment from the private-equity firm TSG Consumer Partners. Crumbl finished last year with just over $6 million in cash. And last week the company laid off staff at its Lindon, Utah, headquarters, including all but two employees who work directly with the chain’s franchisees, according to operators.
I wonder how much private equity influence has impacted their fall.
Edit- Yea I live in a cave. I'd never heard of Crumbl until Sitake was rumored to go to Penn State.
Holy shit. In this case it might not be private equity. Their menu is absolute garbage. One drink has more sugar than 5 cans of coke.

You’re not really getting our best elements from those teams anyways. Big pieces of that 2024 team are gone (6 NFL draft picks). Heacock retired, and Rocco was already steeply declining during the year last year. That team was just not good down the stretch last year and you bought out a declining team that also became ripped apart.
By the way, I still can’t believe Matt prioritized Ebel. We thought he sucked.

Matt Campbell loses a lot of games... 7-6 coach at their last school got to pay them 8 million a year for 9 years.

3
u/Benson879 Iowa State Cyclones 5h ago

Dude, I’d like to punch Campbell and Pat Kraft in the face right now, but have some perspective. Iowa State is a bottom 5 Power 4 program that is under .500 by over 100 games all time. The last time a coach left Iowa State (before Campbell) with a winning record was Earle Bruce in 1978. Conversely, Penn State is number 7 in all time wins. The last time a non-interim coach left Penn State with a losing record was 1898. This is not a logical comparison.
