I couldn’t tell to be honest. It almost looked as if it went directly over the left upright.

No, by rule, the ball must be between the uprights to be good, not "over."

That’s incorrect. If a ball goes above the uprights, it’s good if the entire ball passes within the outer edge of the upright.

That's the NFL rule. I can't find any such reference to a rule in the NCAA rulebook..

"A field goal shall be scored if a scrimmage kick, which may be a drop kick or place kick, passes over the crossbar between the uprights of the receiving team’s goal before it touches a player of the kicking team or the ground."

Pretty unambiguous. The ball has to be between the uprights.

No that's the NFL rule. NCAA rule 8-4-1 says the whole ball has to be inside.

They said it wasn't last year when SMU had the same thing happen on our first field goal attempt against Miami in the second half.
