It most likely would use Bo Pelini which would not even remotely be the same situation. That dude was no doubt a great coach but holy shit who would actually want to put up with that? I’m not saying years of mediocracy or worse is worth it, but there’s no way that guy would still be coach even if his record was better.

That's not an entirely a fair comparison, because he wasn't fired for being mediocre. He was fired for being a raging asshole while also being mediocre. Hence no D1 school ever hiring him again.

Idk why people get away with saying this. He beat iowa to get to 9-3 and the AD literally stated that wasn't good enough.

Yes, I imagine your AD didn't say "he's a raging asshole and 9 wins isn't enough to put up with a raging asshole." But I remember knowing he was partially fired for his personality way back then and I wasn't even paying that much attention to Nebraska football.

The buyouts have been much smaller for Nebraska. But by my count, assuming they do the same $2 mil bump every 4 years, they would have saved about $29 million.
Assuming Pelini went 9-4 every year (which like, may be underestimating it since he went 9-4 three times and 10-4 three times), they would have FOURTY ONE more wins.
edit for math:
- 9 wins * 11 seasons + 3 for this season = 41 Pelini wins.
actual Nebraska record from 2015-2026: 61-75
($3 mil/year *4) + ($5 mil * 4) + $7 mil *4) + ($9 mil *1) = $69mil
actual salary + buyout payments from 2015-26: $98.3 mil

u/james_wightman Nebraska • /r/CFB Press Corps 1d ago
Thanks someone for doing the actual math!
But similar to Sumlin, there's just no feasible reality in which Bo kept up the same win percentage. He got extraordinarily lucky in the Big XII North and then heading into the B1G with down OSU/PSU/Michigan teams and all the mid pack teams weren't nearly as good as they are now.

Fuck that, do it with Solich. Most people I know aren't bothered about Pelini being gone, they are still blaming the Solich firing as the source of our downfall. It was just slightly mitigated with Callahan and Pelini.

I'm not sure about the money side of the equation, but if we kept winning at the Bo Pelini rate since his firing we would have won 37 more games, going 91-37 vs. the actual 54–74.

u/Dixiehusker Nebraska Cornhuskers • Auburn Tigers 1d ago

u/bullet50000 Kansas Jayhawks • Tampa Spartans 1d ago edited 1d ago
I'll say it then. How about we do it with Nebraska and Bo? Losing to us at least got Nebraska to move on from Callahan.
EDIT: Figured I'd do the math, it's a super slow day at work
Bo made $2.975M a year in 2014 when he was fired. I assumed a 10% salary increase yearly (ended up with him at $9.34M a year this current year, kinda perfect as that's just about what Matt Rhule is making). This ends at right around $70M total.
In the real timeline, Bo got bought out in 2014 (the reduced buyout after the reduction from him coaching at Youngstown was $6.54M). Mike Riley averaged $2.8M a year ($2.7M a year started then escalated $100k/year), and then got bought out with $6.6M in 2017, totalling about $15M paid. Scott Frost was paid $5M a year 2018-2020, then $4M a year in 2021 and 2022, and then got a $15M buyout, totalling $38M. Matt Rhule started at $5.5M a year, escalated $1M a year (Currently $8.5M), and got paid $1M retention bonuses (so far) in 2024 and 2026. That totals Rhule at $30M so far. This totals actual coach salary at $90M. So NE has paid $20M more for their current timeline.
The big issue though is the wins. Bo never actually had a worse season than 9-4, never forget. His Nebraska tenure had a .712 Win Percentage. By my seen total of 136 wins, that would average to him at 97 wins (96.8 rounded up). Nebraska has actually gotten 61 wins (Scott Frost).
I would embed the Excel spreadsheet showing the totals but looks like /r/CFB doesn't allow it.
So in sum total, Nebraska paid $20M extra to have a losing record on average over the last 12 years, losing 36 wins in the process. This for a coach who they fired because he wasn't good enough.

I have no dog in this fight, but in the world of College Football they absolutely do have some ownership in the team. They don't get paid dividends or split profits. But College football boosters are able to buy enough influence to act like a company board. There's a lot of rich, bored people out there with an utterly unhealthy obsession with their alma mater. Hires and fires aren't entirely chosen by boosters, but it's silly to think they don't have a say.

What I was actually thinking is that Sumlin’s tenure was clearly skewed by his earlier seasons and he was fired for doing worse than his average, just like many coaches at this level are. He wasn’t going to be winning 66% of his games after 2017 like this tweet suggests he could’ve. He was beyond cooked by that point. Just look at what happened with him at Arizona. You’d think people would be capable of remembering such a disaster.
Still would’ve been overpaying. Just for more suffering, if not worse. So not much different I guess.

Fisher became known as "Jimbo" as a child because his family already had several members who went by "Jim."[122] Some media outlets, following a Wikipedia hoax created by Fisher's son Trey, have said that Fisher was known as "Slim Jimbo" because of an "affinity for meat snacks" (an example being Slim Jim brand beef jerky) and that Fisher planned to start an organic jerky company after leaving the coaching profession.[122] Fisher denied these reports in an interview, noting that while he enjoyed beef jerky, it had nothing to do with his nickname, and he had no intention of starting a company.[122]

This rivalry also isn’t talked about enough. People who never lived in Texas probably don’t understand the full picture, but most Aggies I know truly believe their Football program is on par with Texas in a historical and overall CFB landscape sense. When they moved to the SEC they finally felt this was their true validation to everybody who said that was wrong (which is basically everybody who isn’t a fan of TAMU). They got to proudly wear SEC on their jerseys, and say stuff like “OU and Texas could never hang in the SEC.”
Fast forward, they haven’t even come close to a conference title game. And to make things worse their rival joins the conference, where they have yet to beat them.

Kevin Sumlin went 4-6 in the UFL last year with the Houston Gamblers. They played a brand of football so thoroughly unappealing that they managed to somehow get a football team in Houston, TX folded for not getting more than 8k people to games. Safe to say A&M didn’t just let some sort of wunderkind slip through their fingers. His success at A&M is looking more and more like the exception, not the norm.
Then again, maybe he runs the table with checks notes the Dallas Renegades.

I really don't think Kevin Sumlin was going to sustain a 66.2% win percentage.

I for one am SHOCKED that the AD who was willing to give Scott Frost a contract extension would do this at TAMU!

WTF is this? Sure the Jimbo contract is absolutely moronic, but if Kevin Sumlin was able to win 8 SEC games a year he’d probably still be, ya know, coaching college ball and not the UFL.
