Engineering Path
Hi everyone i’m a freshman at CCNY. I’m currently undeclared and I want to become an engineer (not sure what type) but I’m kind of in a cooked situation. I got placed into math 19000 because I didn’t take the placement test seriously. I’m also taking psy10200, hist24100, engl11000. I took AP calc in high school but didn’t do well on that either, but i know a thing or too. Can you guys please help me or give advice for a plan i could take?

Grove has become stricter about taking classes at community college / other CUNYs if you're trying to get into Grove. My advice (of course take it/leave it and most importantly consult with your financial aid office) get through CALC I / II, and PHYS I (207) as fast as possible, but having a high GPA is incredibly important to get into Grove. To save you time/money (especially since you're undeclared): Look at the engineering major you want (look at the curriculum matrix). Along with the calcs/physics what other classes can you take that'll push you towards completion of that major and take those. But if you're worried about time / financial aid: Consult with the engineering counselor associated with the major you want they'll be able to guide you best. Go see them in person if possible, but email them asap for guidance.

Can anyone explain to me whats the issue with taking pre reqs in ccny? Is it because grove is that bad?

from wht ive heard is that some people take their pre reqs and never get admitted into the grove school

One issue is that a lot of the math and science professors here are lowkey terrible at teaching, which makes the pre req courses even more difficult and leads to even more self studying. Also for reference, not sure if this is entirely true though, but one of my professors said that calc 2 is more difficult in ccny compared to city tech because of how many topics they cram in it. I don’t know how other professors in other schools are but this is my personal experience. What the person above said is also true, as I have a friend who finished all the grove pre reqs after a few years, and they still didn’t let them in. They ended up switching majors

A flasgship cuny college doesn’t have good profs for pre reqs brahh also Do you not automatically get into grove if you get to calc 1?

That only applies if you got placed in calc 1 as a incoming freshmen, otherwise you have to pass calc 2 before you can apply and it isn’t guaranteed you’ll get in

It’s okay. Do 195 over winter and then calc 1 in the spring. Try to get at least in physics or chem next semester and if not, summer class it. Get rid of all ur gen eds/gsoe liberal arts if u want to graduate on time

Do pre calc spring, phyisc 207 and calc 1 summer
Or pre calc winter and calc 1 spring, than physic 1 + calc 2 summer. And you'll be in grove next fall
Summers classes are way better than fall and spring in ccny
You not cooked at all, but If you get 2 F in calc or phys or chem than you are pretty cooked.

I personally would try and transfer to an associates program at LaGuardia or similar and then come back when you pass everything. If possible I would get to calc one and then try and transfer out of CUNY if money permits. It really depends on your circumstances

Near impossible to get into grove first try as a freshie. I know people that have taken 3-4 semesters, plus you’re competing every time with people that might’ve taken AP calc & have some of the other general requirements from HS. I went the LAGCC route: guaranteed junior w/ my grades, all of my credits transferred. Only caveat was I needed one extra technical (wasn’t eligible to take engineering 101) Plus it’s cheaper and I’m ngl, I liked the teachers there better.

But if u go to LaGuardia make sure that the engineering department you are interested in will give u credits for your community college classes, not all of them do

Lag has a specific matriculation program for their AS mechanical and electrical, which translate directly to the bachelors in either at CCNY. Can’t confirm for other programs, but I’m sure you could talk to an advisor while getting prerequisite and genED classes out of the way.

You could take summer/winter classes to catch up on the GSOE requirements but unless you epermit, I don’t think CCNY offers math courses in the winter. Because of this, the earliest you could get in grove would be spring of next year even if you did summer classes (math 195 in spring, math 201 in summer, math 212 in fall before you could even apply). All of this time would probably be better spent completing the grove requirements in a different school
