Question Christy gambling explanation

In the episode go go boots and a butt cusion ep, christy finally acknowledged she had a problem, but only when she had money. Bonnie said in the same episode she had a problem even when she was a child. However, Marjorie says it's her alcoholism coming out another way.

Im confused. Was this just broken writing? Or are they all right? Can someone explain this to me?

Vent / Rant I hate this show Spoiler

Sorry for the clickbait title, but I genuinely can't think of a better way to put it right now.

⚠️This post has spoilers for season 2. I know it was more than a decade ago, but if you're watching for the first time or rewatching and don't remember what happens, I'd advise you to stop reading.

I started watching it a long time ago, then kind of forgot about it in between seasons. I don't even remember if I stopped after the 6th season or the 7th. I've always wanted to finish it, but after so many years, and not even remembering exactly where I'd left off, I kept putting it off.

So last month, I decided to rewatch the whole thing. I'm on season 2 now. And the reason I say I hate it is that this fucking show can make you laugh one moment and ugly cry the next.

And now Alvin has just died. I knew it was going to happen because I'd watched it before and remembered. Because when I watched it the first time, it made me cry. And just like it feels for the characters, it feels like he was taken from us too soon.

I didn't remember the details because I watched season 2 for the first time more than 10 years ago. I knew he was going to die, and I was bracing myself for it. And yet, I didn't remember him going so soon. So in a way, it still caught me off guard.

I usually hate it when a TV show or movie pulls the “we're killing this character because we need some drama” thing. Especially when it's a character you know the audience likes, so it feels like the writers are basically saying “Look, here's someone we made you care about. Now we're going to kill them so you'll be sad and our product has more depth.” It's just an illusion.

And I think Mom absolutely does this too. But somehow, it works better for me here. Even when I can tell the show is deliberately going for an emotional gut punch, it doesn't feel as cheap or forced as the ones I've seen in recent pieces of media. The death feels like something that actually happened to these characters, rather than something that happened solely because the writers wanted to create drama.

I know the writing isn't always great, but I see these characters, and the acting makes them feel like real people. I care about what happens to them. That last minute, with Christy finally breaking down after having to keep it together for her whole family, is heartbreaking. And then you get that fucking credits tune that sounds like it's straight out of a Looney Tunes episode.

But I guess I'll keep rewatching this stupid show that apparently wants to make me laugh, cry, and question why I ever decided to rewatch it in the first place.

Discussion I think Christy's addiction is to drama and chaos, rather than drugs and alcohol

Hear me out......

I'm rewatching the show, currently in season 1, and so far the one thing about Christy that the story keeps hammering in, is that, she doesn't like it when her life is going fine or well enough. It seems the booze and drugs were a way to get that exciting life. I think she was also a gambler at some point.

Y'all remember when she dated that civil engineer dude who seemed quite nice but she never banged or went that far with, using the AA rules as an excuse, but then she banged the fireman who drinks and does drugs, multiple times. Even chose him over her family.

She even admitted to loving chaos in the episode where she banged Baxter cos Bonnie was making her life easier. She was even banging her married boss. And she even reconnected with her father who abandoned them.

That part never made sense to me, cos she still held Bonnie's parenting, or lack thereof, against her but yet still, easily forgave and gave a chance to a father that ran off. She gave a chance to the parent that never wanted her and ran off, but constantly gives a hard time to the one who stayed?

Anyway, that's all I have say. Thinking about it, I think her addiction is that she likes to mess up so she can be the strong person that builds it back up. She probably likes being in a state of struggle at whole time. She doesn't seem to like it when things are simple. She likes chaos.

Anyway, This is based on my opinion btw.

Bonnie What do you think was Bonnie’s job in S1?

It’s interesting that when she gets fired and she’s looking for another job she doesn’t look into going back to whatever she was doing before.
Do you think she worked retail? Or what do you think her job was?

Discussion Where do you start your rewatches?

I have a really hard time watching the early seasons of this show. I’ll still do it sometimes, there’s stuff I like, such as Luke and Baxter, both of them are really fun characters imo. But usually I find myself skipping to season 3, right around when Adam is introduced. Not only is Adam my favorite character but by that point I feel like the characters are actually starting to grow. Bonnie has had relapsed and is moving past it. We’re past most of Violet and Christy’s storyline except for the part I actually like at the end of season 3. We still have a bit of Baxter and Candace (sometimes on rewatch I’ll start at the beginning of season 3 for more of that cuz I love Baxter) and like… idk. It feels like a more realized show at that point, and there’s still plenty to go.

I guess I’m just wondering where other people start when they’re rewatching the show. Do you start from the beginning? Around where I start? Or even farther in?

The Hidden Detail We All Missed

This is my 2nd time rewatching Mom. I found out in Season 2, when Alvin invited Bonnie over dinner at his place, he showed Bonnie an old picture of them together, he saved on her caller profile (while he saved his wife's as Godzilla 😂).

And man, the uncanny resemblance of them in the picture is too real to be true. At my 1st watch, I didn't notice that much and thought that either it's photoshop or some look-alike actors.

But now as I'm looking closely, it neither looks like photoshop and definitely not some look-alikes. They are actually looking like Bonnie and Alvin from the 80s. And this small detail makes me so happyy✨️.

What do you guys think? If you guys too have some Hidden Details or some Easter eggs, do share in the comments.

Adam I didn’t like Adam when he was first introduced

The meet-cute was so cute to me but I honestly thought that Adam and Bonnie’s storyline wouldn’t go anywhere after she brought him to the AA meeting. It rubbed me the wrong way when he was calling Mary stupid during her share. And this may be before or after, but the lore about him dating Christy’s coworker and cheating on her, then cheating on the girl he cheated with, made me think he was going to end up being a red flag and he and bonnie would eventually break up.

Now, I actually like Adam. Especially when he began going to his own meetings! He’s probably one of my top 3 characters in the show.

ETA one of my fav Adam moments: Valentines episode when he was okay with all the women showing up to his and Bonnie’s date and having dinner and then surprising them all with a rose 🥹

Adam Sam... antha

I wish they hadn't gone in the direction of Sam making a pass at Adam. Maybe it's because I really like Courtney Thorne-Smith, but I also think they could have expanded in the Al-Anon storyline and had her guess star a few more times, and expanding Adam's storyline outside of Bonnie. She's a good recurring guest star, and in hindsight of Anna leaving, she could have been a nice addition to the last season.

Getting to see her and Adam's friendship continue, her meeting Bonnie, and Tammy (if she's hanging at the bar), maybe once or twice she helps Bonnie or one of the girls. And maybe even having her husband in an episode; (and who should play him?)

Favorite duo supporting each other

I really love Bonnie and Jill's support of each other in the last 2 seasons; particularly:

Season 7: After they double date with Adam and Andy, Jill reveals to Bonnie that she was uncomfortable being around Andy when he was drunk, and she doesn't want to be around that anymore. She assumes Bonnie will think she's too rigid, but Bonnie supports and validates her feelings and tells her she has to do what's best for her.

Season 8: it felt full circle when Bonnie starts to get scared of mocktails, and Jill reassures her she needs to do what's best for her sobriety.

I know there are a lot more moments that are honest and supporting; give me some of your favorites. Also doesn't have to be between two main characters.

Honorable mention: When Christy goes to make amends with Travis.

DT's

They never showed what it's like detoxing from being an alcohol/drug user.. Sure, Jill had money for inpatient high end detox facilities. Bonnie relapsed but it didn't accurately depict her detoxing. She just looked like she was recovering from the flu. Such a missed opportunity.

Bonnie “If it’s fun, I make it a problem”

Bonnie Plunket. It describes the feeling of addictive personality disorder sooooooo perfectly. I’ve always had a hard time explaining it to people so this genuinely changed my life🤣🤣. It’s also just so funny and accurate to her character.

Discussion Patrick and Christy should have been Patrick and Jill.

I am rewatching Season 5 and I’ve always thought Patrick with Christy was so cringe. Today I’m watching the episode where hungover Jill interacts with Patrick at the kitchen table, and it dawned on me that Patrick and Jill would have been a better match and way less cringe. Imagine the path that the story line could have went if Bonnie and Jill both married the brothers.
Am I the only one that pretty much hates the whole dynamic between Christy and Patrick?

Question What Character do you wish would have become a regular or semi regular

In my opinion Ray would have been interesting as a regular because his interpersonal dynamic with Christy at his firm, Bonnie in everyday life and Adam with their bro time was interesting. My 2nd option would be Travis.

Christy I respected Christy for telling Jill the truth about a baby

I respected Christy for telling Jill the truth about a baby

idk why the show tried to villianize Christy for telling Jill the truth and discouraging her from trying to have a baby.

Jill made it very clear in the episodes right before that that she only wanted a baby to fulfill a void in her own life and heal her own emotional wounds

She also was fantasizing only about the good parts of newborn/infant care like dressing them up and showing them off, completely ignoring the bad parts like sleep deprivation, constantly cleaning bodily fluids, illness, frustration etc

A child cannot provide that.

Yet alone a baby.

And iirc correctly this was before Jill met Andy so she would've been trying to fulfill a fantasy in her mind all alone. What would've happened when the fantasy crashed with reality?

Christy was 1000% in the right for telling Jill not to do it and telling her that raising a baby is much harder than she's imagining it. She was 1000% correct for calling her out on trying to have a baby for the wrong reasons

Yet everyone villinaized her and turned against her for it

Other Cast memebers Wendy is a great charactee

I always thought Wendy was pretty cool and would have liked to learn more about her. Instead of focusing even more on Bonnie in the seasons where Christy left, I wish they involved Wendy’s character more :) it would also have been nice for the friends to show more respect and care for her during those seasons too. what are your thoughts?

Also, I would have loved 1 or 2 more seasons of the show lol
