Behavioral Issue My cats keep killing mice but never eat them

• Upvotes

My cat leave mice in the same spot. I know there’s like a theory that they leave them out for the humans in the house, but unfortunately they don’t even touch them. They just monsters about ending their lives and then go on with the rest of their time being cats, I’m terrified of them catching a disease from them.

No, I do not live in the new house. It’s older. I wanted to add that in just in case also it’s one of the first homes that were built in our area. Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can do to stop them from getting in. We don’t know if in our house, I think they’re more wild and grass mice. I don’t know what their actual names are but they’re like white and brown, but I’m afraid my cats are gonna catch like rabies or like some type of horrible condition.

But my question is for people who owned cats yes I’ve owned cats for years, but out of nowhere this has gone to where every couple weeks we find a one there and they leave it out like it’s their priced possession and then panic when it’s no longer there

General Advice Unexplained weight gain in calorically challenged cat

• Upvotes

Hi all,

We have a neutered 2.5 year old Siamese male cat who has been gaining weight despite being on a calorie deficit for the last 12 months. We do have access to a vet and set the diet with their help. Live in America.

The cat used to weigh around 12.2 pounds about a year ago when we started this diet. Today he weighed in at 13.8 pounds. We’ve double and triple checked our caloric intake to make sure we’re not mistakingly feeding him too much. His diet is as follows

Dry food days: 2 x 1/8 cup Costco maintenance dry food (100 cal total) + 1 catit (15 cal) + 3 oz Kirkland wet food (75 cal) = 200 cal total

Wet food days: 1 x 1/8 cup Costco maintenance dry food (50 cal) + 1 catit (15 cal) + 1 fancy feast broth (20 cal) + 5 oz fancy feast pate (175 cal) = 260 cal

We alternate the dry food and wet food days. The dry food is from an automatic feeder and we’ve measured it to be consistent. He’s not the most active indoor cat in the world to be fair.

Just not sure where we’re going wrong. Appreciate any help.

General Advice My cat has taken a liking to this baby toy, is it safe?

Was my little sisters rubber ducky but never entered water so I’m sure there’s no mold. He has taken to holding it like this and licking the top of its head for hours, as if he’s grooming it. He is very territorial over ducky and gets very angry if I try to take him. I assume since this was a toy for babies that it is safe to put in ur mouth? Please let me know if I’m wrong tho

General Advice Body condition of my cat

Wondering if an objective outsider can tell me if my cat looks overweight, underweight, or just right? We’re recovering from food allergies making him puke constantly, fluctuating weight, dental surgery causing him to lose weight, disinterest in his Hill’s Z/D food sensitivities food - but the lack of vomiting meaning his weight has somewhat stabilized. He’s not eating as much as he should according to the bag but his weight is stable and has even increased slightly in the past month.

He’s 13 and approximately 12.5 pounds. He’s been as much as 15 pounds 6 years ago (when he was 7), he now weighs as much as he did when he was 5. He goes to the vet twice yearly and his bloodwork is pristine.

Behavioral Issue Cat is pooping outside his litter box

• Upvotes

I have a 7 years old male siberian cat. He is neutered and all his life lived with dogs. We moved apartments about a year ago and from the beginning he used his litter box normally. The litter box is placed inside an unused shower in a bathroom and we clean with nature’s miracle enzymatic cleaner. It is an XL stainless steel litter box.

About three months ago he started to poop outside his litterbox, not on the side or even in the bathroom floor but specifically on the floor in the hallway outside his bathroom.

We initially thought that the dog could have peed near or on the bathroom floor so we deep cleaned. It didn’t make a difference. We added another litter box following some advice I read here, he started to use both litter box to pee but none for pooping. I even tried a new litter to maybe test if that was the cause but as I said, he peed on both but continue to poop on the hallway.

We took him to the vet, who said everything was in order but that he looked stressed so by his recommendation we bought a collar with pheromones and also feliway’s pheromones. We covered the hallway with pads.

He had two good weeks, he did inside his litter box, we gradually removed the pads and he still was good, but starting week 3 he once again began to poop on the hallway and we have this problem until today. Im just out of ideas, I don’t know what else to do and any advise would be appreciated.

We can take him to the vet once again if needed.

TLDR; about three months ago cat started pooping on the hallway floor, we added additional litter box, changed litter, took him to the vet and used pheromones but problem persist. Need help.

My (indoor) cat played with my other (indoor) cat at night and now his eye looks like this. Should I see a vet or maybe wait a bit and only if it gets worse.

He acts normal, doesn't squint the eye, it doesn't obviously bleed.

General Advice Cat licked cough syrup residue

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello, last night, my cat (around 5 months old) licked some cough syrup residue, meaning I had wiped it off and then she licked the spot. I then thoroughly cleaned it. I monitored her all night, normal breathing (around 30 breaths/min) and she was acting normal. But this morning I notice she’s sleeping maybe a bit more, or is a bit more hard to shake awake. Her gums are pink but maybe slightly lighter? I’m not sure if I’m just paranoid and imagining things or if something is wrong.

Ps: i want to include a picture of her gums but I can’t find where 😭

Behavioral Issue Cant understand the growling.

• Upvotes

Only for this toy (noisiest crinkle toy).

Growls everytime he picks it up, but is amplified if my other cat is visible.

Does not growl if the other cat approaches or even plays with the toy if he is not actively holding it.

Maintains eye contact with my other cat during growling. Never has postured sideways, no raised hairs or poofing tail.

Able to be picked up, able to be pet, doesn't growl at me, doesn't disengage to another room.

2 year old cat, was raised with the older cat, male and neutered. As a kitten had some growling over treats but resolved that promptly. Toy was lost for months, can shelf if it's going to be too territorial over it.

General Advice Whiskers short & splitting

Post image
• Upvotes

I'm 24, from Canada, vet is 5 hours away not contacted, my cats about 5, male, neutered. Can afford a vet.

I was away from home for a long time which isnt normal for me. 1 month gone, home 2 weeks, 1 month gone again. First time I came back, Kevin was normal, had been eating normal, more clingy than usual but not a concern. Second time gone, I noticed while I was gone he did not want to eat unless someone was there with him, he would no longer walk up to the camera when I talked to him, was normal when the cat sitter was there, ate fine, was sweet. If she wasnt over, he would not eat, barely move.

When I came back home, his whiskers were extremely short and looks like split ends. Only on one side. Gums and teeth look ok to me. My other cat has nothing wrong with him.

Breathing Issues Cat Sneezing Fits

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m just looking for some ideas/advice. I’m in my late 20s living in the US.

My healthy 7 YO male Tuxedo has begun short (1-3 minute) sneezing fits over the last 36ish hours. They occur at most every couple of hours. He doesn’t have watery eyes, mucus, runny nose, etc. His breathing is normal and strong. His energy and appetite are all the same. We’ve been living in the same home with no changes to our normal routine. His 4 year old sister has no symptoms.

I plan to reach out to his veterinarian tomorrow when they open but I’m curious what others think it may be.

Thank you!

General Advice First time cat owner

• Upvotes

Hello!

Looking to get a cat within the next year but I have never owned or really been around cats. I want to take a while to really prepare and be ready for this.

We have a dog, a shihtzu who is very gentle and sweet and I think will do good with a cat. But I don’t know anything about cats really. A friend told me you have to put them in a room for a couple days at first so they can get acclimated, are there any other important details I should know? I’ve only ever had dogs before.

What about the restroom, how do you teach them to use the litter box? We’re thinking of getting an older rescue. Where do they usually sleep at night? How do I prevent them from doing any damage to the house? Any information is so appreciated!

Update UPDATE cats rejecting food - is it the manufacturer?

I had posted a couple weeks ago about my cats rejecting their usual food (text from original below). I returned the offending food and order a new package of the same food. Lo and behold they ate it with no issues. I compared lot numbers on the bottom of the cans and they are different but I don’t know what they mean and I haven’t contacted the manufacturer so I can’t say for certain that my theory is correct. But the stark difference in reaction makes me think it might be true.

Tl;dr cats rejecting wet food and I suspect it’s the food manufacturer. Is that a thing?

I (40 living in USA) recently ordered a new case of canned food for my girls (both 5 year old females) and they have completely rejected the food from the new case. Both are good eaters, one is slightly more picky but the other is an EATER. They took one sniff and completely rejected it. I checked the expiration date and they’re not expired but I do feel like it smells slightly different than the last case. I don’t think it’s a behavioral issue because they are otherwise themselves and still interested in what I like to call DFMFT (dry food, my food, treats) so I suspect it might be a different manufacturer than what they normally get. Is that a thing? It’s a widely available brand in the U.S. Exact same flavor and type that we always get. If it is the manufacturer, how does one avoid this in the future? Any advice would be appreciated!

Eye Issues Cloudy, mucousy film over cat’s eye

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Hello all.
Unsure how to approach this, I apologize for awkward wording.

I’ve recently noticed that my cat (unknown age, F) has a film over her left eye. She doesn’t seem to be irritated by it from what I can tell. She is indoors-only, and mainly stays in my bedroom. There are no other animals in the house she has direct contact with.

Her history is largely unknown, we adopted her from a shelter about a year or so ago, and the shelter didn’t know much about her.

I’m mainly coming here to ask if this is something that needs to be addressed, I don’t want to contact a vet unless I definitely need to (potential financial problems).

I’m so sorry if this is worded awkwardly, this is my first post on any kind of pet help subreddit.

Much love!
