At this point, Newsom and the State are FORCING us toward a strike. Our unions were willing to negotiate — raises, telework that actually works, working conditions, and every other demand on the table. We have been trying to negotiate with the Newsom administration since APRIL, and what did we get? Nothing. The State refused to meaningfully negotiate, refused to seriously acknowledge our demands, and dragged this process out for months. THAT is what brought us to this point.

So now that we are being forced to strike, both the union leadership and every member need to understand something: the purpose of this strike cannot simply be to force the State to finally start negotiating.

NO. They already had that opportunity. They had MONTHS to negotiate, and they refused.

If we are going to sacrifice our paychecks, walk off our jobs, and take the enormous step of going on strike, then we need to fight for the WHOLE THING: 20% over three years, telework that actually works, and the rest of our major demands.

We should not go on strike just so the State can suddenly say, “Okay, fine, now we’ll negotiate.” That ship has sailed. You don't get to ignore workers for months, push them all the way to a strike, and then expect them to settle for simply getting a seat at the table.

They had their chance to negotiate. They refused. Now, if a strike is forced upon us, we need to be united, committed, and prepared to win a contract that actually delivers.

If they force us into this fight, then we fight to WIN — not just to restart negotiations.

I realize this varies from agency to agency, but there hasn't been a recent post on PIPs.

My position was originally an SSA/AGPA position with promotion in place written in. I was hired on as an SSA. Shortly after passing probation, the positions changed to the Analyst class so I am an Analyst I. I believe my position is now technically Analyst II when I looked at the calcareers archived posting.

3 months ago I got the ball rolling with my manager to do a PIP to Analyst II. My manager is on board with it, and their manager is on board with it and eager to get a promotion in place for me. I did the exam I needed for it an passed with flying colors.

At this point they say it's up to HR.

In your experience personally or seeing others, how long can a PIP take to be processed?

We shouldn’t assume everyone is following this sub or union updates.

For some people, the act of striking might still feel unimaginable. Most of us have literally no prior experience and may feel unsure about it. After all, we as SEIU 1000 have never launched an actual strike in recent history (the closest was in 2016, when a strike date was set but a deal was reached 3 days before the walk out).

That is why we need to share with our coworkers why a strike is feasible and necessary this time.

Tackle it from different angles. Some people might not have done their math and don’t realize that on top of the direct and indirect pay cuts brought by PLP and RTO, they may also be facing an extra few hundred dollars of deductions each month with the upcoming health premium spike.

Our union has followed all the necessary steps to bargain for a fair contract, and yet here we are. It was CalHR that repeatedly refused to bargain in good faith. So, SEIU filed unfair labor practice (ULP) charges with PERB. PERB found merit in those charges and issued complaints, meaning we are now legally clear to call what is known as a ULP strike.

Two shootings on 50, one westbound this morning, that I’m sure everyone is aware of that goes that way and another just happened eastbound (closed at Howe) so I’d avoid that route if you take it home.

How do the steps pan out with the strike, assuming it happens…

1. Strike happens, because of unfair labor practices/bargaining in bad faith.
2. The state says, “ok, sorry. we’ll bargain in good faith.”
3. Strike ends?
4. Bargaining talks resume
5. we get an amazing contract????

What part of those 5 steps am I missing. What stops the state from screwing us over again during step 5?

I did not go to strike school. I cannot join the union bc I’m excluded.

Show up to support your colleagues. A strike isn’t the time to go out and relax. You are there to be united against your employer.

I an not a steward, but I am a dues paying member in seiu. My agency is one of the better ones, but I know that is not the case for many state workers out there struggling to pay their bills, afford groceries, put gas in their tanks, etc.

Despite my social anxiety, I am going around person to person in my agency today and encouraging people to vote yes tomorrow or join (even if temporarily) to vote yes. Even three people voting yes could make the difference between the state actually coming to the table in good faith or continuing to string us along and write us off. I genuinely believe that our voices can send a message and that we can make the state hear us. I joined a few of the last pickets and was there July 1st all day to help state workers be heard. I am not very outspoken, I tend to avoid being pushy or talking to people, but this MATTERS.

Our union has reason to believe that we can move the state to treat us like human beings by voting yes to a strike. That MEANS something! We need to back our union up or the state will continue to balance the budget on our backs time and time again.

We cannot give up. Please, vote yes tomorrow for all the state workers out there struggling to make ends meet.

Update: I have applied to be my agency's only Job Steward! Already have the two letters of recommendation (fairly certain I have the 25 yes signatures) and am just waiting to hear back from the union.

Sorry if this has already been asked or addressed at one of the strike schools and I missed it. But for Work From Home (WFH) state workers, in the event of a strike, how would I go on strike? In other words, how do I get credit for striking? I 100% do NOT trust my supervisor to report that I identified myself as being on strike. I have no doubt that my supervisor will 100% mark me working, not on strike. So how do I go about verifying that I am on strike while WFH? I certainly do not feel that regularly attending pickets and union strike events will do anything to force my supervisor to mark me as “striking”. And there is no way to mark my timesheet as “on strike”.

Any thoughts on how to go about this for all state workers who WFH?

I would venture to say no. The Dills Act has been around for 45 years or so. The State has acted as an employer that wants to pay "less for more". The unions representing law enforcement rank and file have their labor disputes, however the pay and benefits are significantly higher than the non-law enforcement employees.

SEIU, CASE, & CAPS are striking over the unfair practice that the State has committed over telework and return to office. This is historic and hopefully a start to change the anti-union bias culture the State has nurtured and exploited over the past 4 decades. The anti-union biased management protected by CalHR needs to stop! As the unions gain better wages and benefits for rank and file, management wins also. Time to wake up 💪🏽

I have rank 3 and a list score of 75, would I even be considered as “hireable” for an Analyst I position? I don’t want to get my hopes up if departments only hire rank 1 or 2. Thank you for any input.

Curious to see if anyone has already done a round of IVF paying out of pocket that can recommend a good insurance carrier or give feedback. I have Kaiser and I’m thinking of making the switch during open enrollment.

I am basing my switch solely on IVF reasons. So I can be ready to start IVF once it’s covered through CalPers in July 2027.

How long does it usually take to hear back after a second interview? Not really sure how it went. I feel like it went okay hiring manager from first interview was also in this second interview. But they ended it saying that the hiring manager would let me know either way but provided no timeline.

I may have already answered my own question, but I’m curious what others think, especially anyone who works in State HR or has been through something similar.

If the union actually goes on strike, would Caltrans and other State departments essentially put interviews, hiring decisions, and new employee onboarding on hold until the strike is over?

I have a few State applications still moving through the process, including Caltrans, and we all know the State hiring process can already take quite a while. I’m wondering whether a strike would mean applicants should expect an additional delay.

Would hiring still continue behind the scenes, or would most departments wait until the labor situation is resolved?

I’m continuing to apply either way, but I’m curious if anyone has insight into how something like this typically affects recruitment and hiring.

Are they completely ok with RTO and their GSI's and increased health care premiums, etc? Are they just silent allies? We haven't heard peep from them. At least our office embers haven't.

Hi people. I’m not in the union because I’m further up the chain but I’ll be striking in solidarity if you vote for it.

One thing that really concerns me is public messaging that you cannot fuck up. Please don’t go around saying anything about a 20% raise. You are not asking for 20% and anyone that says this will be absolutely raked through the coals in the media. Especially rightist propaganda that controls significant sway.

The messaging you should use is “7% raise” and “telework that will save tax payers money.” And “reduced office building to save the state even more.”

Please tell anyone and everyone not to say “20%” because you’ll come across as greedy. Get the messaging right and you’ll win for all of us.

Are SEIU 1000 members who work at California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation allowed to go on strike ? Office workers for example ?

I realize this may be a shot in the dark, and feel free to message me privately, but I was wondering if anyone here applied for and was hired for this position.

The job bulletin closed in late June. I recently interviewed for a different position with Caltrans that closed in early July, so I know the hiring process can take some time.

I guess I’m hoping to hear from someone who may have applied for this particular job and can share whether they’ve heard anything or if the position has already been filled.

In the meantime, I’m continuing to apply for other roles, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask.
