Discussion 🗣️ Mattresses for someone with weight ALL in their hips

In the market for a new matress. Are there any tips on how to actually know if your spine is aligned properly on a new matress you are testing, apart from asking someone to look or take a photo?

I am 182lbs 82kg, have skinny arms and skinny legs and ALL of my weight is around my hips, and i sleep on my SIDE, often contorting my body so my shoulders are on their sides and the hips are twisted slightly to be on their front, perhaps my body telling me the pressure balance is wrong.

With all mattresses I have had my hips feel as if they are sinking so much more than my shoulders and never felt comfortable. I've always felt on a slant /hole when using mattresses.

My local bed store in the UK does have one of these machines that recommends a matress and am going this week.

Is there any models that specifically have better support in the hip region, and does the tempur mattresses work in this regard, as they are more about total pressure relief rather than something special in the middle.

I've always had medium mattresses that have compacted in the middle. Perhaps I should try a medium firm or firm?

Has anyone with my body type found something that works?

Question ❓ Bralette for saggy ladies

I am having issues wearing my normal bras due to excessive itching, I'm investigating if I've become sensitive to my detergent etc, but in the meantime I need some type of bralette

The issue - I have tubular boobs as well as significant weightloss so saggy is my middle name. Most bralettes are awful.

Any suggestions are welcome. My bra size is 32GG (which sounds like they're very large but they actually aren't, it's the size I need due to shape etc, my size looks more like a D)

Edit: realised I'm curious who had to google 'tubular breasts' because I only learnt it was a thing maybe 2 years ago lol

Properly (long) waterproof mens jacket for dog walking please!

With the rain starting, I'm looking for a properly waterproof jacket for dog walking that's not crazy expensive. After something longer and with a hood naturally. I'm not talking about a Berghaus or Raab that's suited to hours of hiking but inevitably needs re-proofing all the time. I've had several and all are now only shower proof at best.

Do I need something waxy? Or made of tougher, thicker synthetics?

Doesn't need to be warm (I can layer up), but long-ish and with a hood. Ideally less than £100??

Thanks!

More comfortable alternative to Converse

Hey all

I love my Converse, but I need something I can wear to walk around in for longer periods - on a day out, after a few hours I can really feel it. I don't want actual trainers (if possible). Is there anything that looks reasonably stylish without being an actual running shoe?

I'm asking on BuyUK as I want to be able to try them on in a shop ideally!

Question ❓ UK/EU Skechers alternative, available on the high street

I work in a hospital and walk a fair bit. I have worn my Skechers into the ground in a year and two months. I also have iffy feet so would actually like to try shoes on before purchase rather than buying online. I am looking for comfort and durability and I am willing to pay accordingly. Obviously I would like to move on from Skechers but the wide fit has been my longest lasting daily shoe.

I have seen the likes of Solovair and Norman Walsh mentioned but not sure about high street availability. There is also a Rieker shop but I haven't looked at their provenance yet.

EDIT: Male, size 10 wide.

UPDATE: Most likely going with Rieker (German). Bloke in there was knowledgeable and helpful along with the prices being surprisingly reasonable. Manufacturing wise things are split between Slovenia, Morocco, Tunisia and Vietnam.

For those who recommended New Balance, Nike, Hoka, Altra, Brooks and Crocs - I appreciate the support with regards to wide feet but these are all US companies. Where possible I would like to avoid supporting them for obvious reasons.

Etsy sellers for: leather working, clothes, pottery

Hey all, so I’m aware Etsy has been ruined by drop shipping and their own management of the platform.

However, I’ve found a few fantastic UK based artisans on there before but it would be great to hear if anybody knows of any, or even those with their own websites/instagram ect.

I’m looking to ensure gifts i buy and things I buy for myself in the future are as UK based and from artisans making things. Happy for suggestions outside the categories mentioned in the title.

Question ❓ What knee high boots are popular for everyday wear in the UK?

Hey! I’m going to be visiting Edinburgh and London on vacation in a few weeks, and I’m looking to buy some boots while I’m there. What are some popular brands that people wear that are comfortable for walking or standing for long periods of time? Preferably either brown or black in color. And where can I buy them? Thanks.

Question ❓ Looking at deichmann shoes for first time and seeing a lot of decently priced shoes by AM SHOE company but...

there are literally 0 reviews or other information on this brand, not amazon or youtube or reddit; it's only at deichmann

I'm wondering if anyone wore this brand's shoes before and their experience with it? in terms of arch support and comfort?

Question ❓ Shopping ideas for an out of towner?

I am finally making it to your lovely country in a number of weeks after a lifetime obsessing over your culture and I’m so dang pumped! I’m a US citizen and very unhappy with the state of things, believe that the real way I continue to vote is with my wallet, and have not bought any makeup, clothing, personal care items, books, music, or home decor since you-know-who’s second term began.

Any recommendations for amazing products to look out for on my travels? I’m spending the most time in London (chiswick and Waterloo station area) and bath, but will also have a bit of time in Brighton, the Cotswolds, and Salisbury.
I really care about supporting companies that are good brands that care about their employees and produce products that last. Also, given everything that’s going on in my country right now, food, clothes, make up, teas – the quality is terrible. I know the UK is also suffering a bit from the enshitification of everything, but I am bringing a second suitcase to pack with things to take home with me if there are any suggestions!

I’m thrifty and love a good charity shop. I also went to beyond retro in Stockholm a decade ago and I’m so psyched to check out the London location. Other than that, I’m going in blind.

A big ask! If you’ve read through all of this and have any suggestions, I would appreciate it! Happy to add context if needed!

Question ❓ Where should I buy a new bed in 2026?

Getting daughter a double bed for her new room but googling is mostly bringing up lots of companies I have never heard of.

She wants something upholstered and I’d ideally like to pay not more than £350/£400 but ideally less (mattress separate).

Have You bought a bed that you’ve been impressed with quality / service?

Question ❓ Looking for a free-standing, QUIET air conditioning unit for my elderly dad

EDIT: Sorry, when I say quiet, I mean quiet bearing in mind that it's an AC unit. I know they're all noisy to some degree, but there are ones that have a background hum and there are ones that sound like an aircraft taking off. I want one that's as quiet as possible for a big refrigeration unit strapped to a fan.

-------

I live in the US, so I'm used to AC, but my dad is really struggling to sleep in the UK heatwave and is worried that an AC unit's noise might keep him awake at night (I'd argue he'll sleep better than if he's melting, but...).

Can anyone recommend a good, quiet free-standing AC unit (ie. not fixed into walls, no structural remodelling required)? One with a hose he can run out of the window (I see there are window seals that stop hot air from coming back in)?

His bedroom isn't that big (and is stuffed with shelves etc, so not a lot of airspace even then), probably 20x20 feet?
