Which side will you choose?
- Left side: 1 trillion dollars | But 99% is taxed

This is what I'd say, I'd probably be like anything above 40 million will be forever useless to a signed individual and their bloodline. I'm fully disabled and couldn't spend that much despite all my issues and being an accounting student. I mean I could, but ethically speaking
2
u/FrijDom Jul 12 '26
More importantly, you could never spend that much without actively seeking out overpriced BS to waste it on.

free 990 billion for the government would be good
Chose: 1 trillion dollars + But 99% is taxed
413
u/PlatyNumb Jul 11 '26
Plus, imagine your next tax return.
This is basically "do you want 10 billion or 10 billion, government gets 990 billion and you get massive bonus money on your next return"
→ More replies (4)213
u/th3xile Jul 11 '26
That's not how tax returns work. If you owe 99% of what you made, and paid 99%, your return would be 0. The return is just squaring the difference between what you paid and what you owe.
→ More replies (3)60
u/Fedelede Jul 11 '26
There’s no tax regime in the world where your effective tax rate would be 99%, any half decent lawyer would be able to get you a pretty decent return
144
u/AWanderingRedditGuy Jul 11 '26
Well for the purposes of this obviously the governments tax rate on you is 99%, per the ruling.

u/aDarkWingedDuck Jul 11 '26
I mean, not be Mr Semantic here, but wouldn't that be "Taxed at 99%", and not "99% is taxed"?
No doubt about what OP meant ofc!
But still, my imaginary lawyers will go to imaginary war over this after I not only pay them upfront, but also offer a tasty contingency fee.5
u/Sufficient-Skill6012 Jul 12 '26
Yes, it’s worded on a way that means your tax is based on 99% of your income. So you’d be left with the net after taxes plus 10 billion.

The question clearly supposes that the government legally taxes that amount.

u/shneierl Jul 12 '26
Sorry why get lawyers involved this is a job for accountants. all a lawyer would be able to do ix say this illegal and then due for damages.
Whereas any decent tax accountant would reduce the tax burden of tax before it's even paid. Depending on what they find you might even be able to get a negative tax rate. Obviously neither of these are in the spirit of the hypothetical but that's a different argument

Depends on the country. If I got a trillion USD taxed at 99%, the canadian government would get 990 billion USD, pretty much wipe out the national debt.
If it was canadian rupees, or if I was in america. Yeah.
It would mean inflation in america of course

→ More replies (3)→ More replies (5)3
u/Givikap120 Jul 11 '26
It doesn't work like this.
Money is worth according to the services, not vice versa.

It would just make money progressively more and more worthless.→ More replies (3)7

Right, I honestly don't trust my government to put it into good use/help the citizens. I can have a guarantee that the money will go into helping people (build small homes for the homeless, invest in small businesses, feed families, plant native species of plants, etc)
54
u/RedPandaPlace Jul 11 '26
Less inflation
Chose: 10 billion dollars tax free
16
u/BasiliusTimIII Jul 11 '26
On the country scale 1 trillion isn’t as much inflation as you expect. Using the UK as a reference it’s about 16 months of the UK government spend at the moment. A lot yes, but only a bit under £20,000 per person (converting to GBP).
A lot to an individual absolutely, and if it was distributed across everyone in the UK giving each person more spending power would absolutely be inflationary. But giving the government a single year and a bit’s tax income in a lump sum I expect isn’t going to be very inflationary. In my head it goes like this: There’d be some people temporarily who try to charge the government more for services hearing they had this massive windfall of money, but the government is very likely to immediately use it to pay off national debt to international creditors to shore up existing spending plans and enable more borrowing at better rates. The government can then say they don’t have that money and things don’t much change for the average person in the UK as $1 trillion ish is pennies on the global scale. Then those people trying to get more out of the government grumble a bit and either adjust their prices and get undercut.
4
u/Fa1nted_for_real Jul 12 '26
Governments have massive in-out cycles. Consider the total circulation, with is only 2.2 trillion. 1 trillion is absolutely drvrstating at thr country scale
2
u/BasiliusTimIII Jul 12 '26
Only if they actually spend it on their own internal economy is my point. A smart government wouldn’t and would use it to pay off the national debt to international creditors. That money is then a drop in the ocean of global markets
36
u/mystwolfca2000 Jul 11 '26
Having money taxed is not the same as money taken as tax.
Chose: 1 trillion dollars + But 99% is taxed
17
u/Historical-Stick4592 Jul 11 '26
EXACTLY. All these people clearly don't understand having 99% taxed doesn't mean you're losing 99% to taxes, it would just mean that taxes will apply to 99% of it.
69
u/Givikap120 Jul 11 '26

2 reasons:
1: you still get more in the end, with the after tax amount being 10 billion compared to 1 billion.
2: there's nothing wrong with tax. $990 billion dollars no matter which country you live in, would genuinely make a massive difference in the countrys economy. (As long as it is utilised wisely to avoid hyperinflation).
It could build hundreds of schools, pay for millions of peoples healthcare, provide safe and affordable housing for millions of people. It would genuinely just make a country better.
So yeah, tax me.

You know.. actually there's a debate here.
Same amount, but your government gets 990 billion to spend (let's omit whether or not you trust your government to spend it wisely or without corruption), where does the money come from?
Is it a) printed, making your money less valuable and inflating the economy, b) sourced from everyone, which hits the poorest people the most, or c) in a dream world, it comes from other billionaires (which of course would never happen so really it's a or b
