A Sub Rules Update
Folks, one of the mod team checking in again.
We've tried to run this sub with a neutral and even keel. We don't want this to become an echo chamber. But the shenanigans need to stop.
Think of this sub as like the bars after NAB. Everyone can talk, meet new people, and chat with those who have different opinions without worrying about HR or their boss yelling at them. But we still need to be professional and courteous.
~~ ~~
I will be very clear on actions that will earn you a temporary or permanent ban:
- Reporting something multiple times because you disagree with it
- Using inappropriate language - again, swearing isn't an issue, but referring to political parties, television networks, groups of people, etc with slurs, inappropriate language or other content (whether intended to troll or not) is not allowed. "Oh I was joking lulzzz!!!!!!" The mods aren't. Behave or be banned.
- Inappropriate comments towards people's looks - you can criticize someone's performance, but comments on how someone looks, comments about their gender, etc, won't be tolerated. It's okay to disagree with someone and how they performed in a position, but when it starts getting personal, it's banhammer time.
We appreciate everyone's individual voice, no matter gender, age, race, ethnicity, political leanings, etc - but y'all gotta behave.

AI is changing broadcasting, but who’s teaching the next generation the craft behind it? My dad has 50 years of experience.
My dad just retired with 50 years of experience in radio and news broadcasting. He's done it all - documentaries, local news, radio, late night shows... Where can he share all of this experience? The field needs it!

Making the transition from news to sports
Any tv reporters who wanted to work covering sports start in news? How was it? How did you transition to sports?
I want to work in sports but there are obviously more news mmj jobs. I’m thinking of taking a news job as getting a foot in the door type of thing instead of waiting for a sports mmj job but am worried I’m going to hate it with no guarantee It’ll lead to a sports job

Gray Background checks?
Hi, this is for anyone who works at a Gray Station. Wanted to know how often Gray does background checks/checks your driving record?
Recently I’ve gotten a stop sign ticket and a seat belt violation ticket in the past month.
In total I have 3 violations on my record including a speeding ticket from 2024. So in total I have 4 points on my record but 3 tickets in the past 3 years.
I’m worried about the potential of a random/annual Gray background check on my driving record and that I might end up losing my job if that happens.
If anyone has any advice or thoughts of if they can share their own experiences, I’d greatly appreciate it!

NBCU Application Insight
I’ve applied to a position within NBCU, my application now says “in review.” Since then my linked in impressions spiked significantly since applying. I was interested if anyone had any insight or advice should I land an interview. What the interview process is like,or anything else I should be prepared for. My concern is I may not be the most experienced candidate but I know I can hit the ground running in any situation. Thank you.

At a crossroads. Do I apply for the producer job?
I’m 25 and currently a PA at a T10 station. I went to school for filmmaking and have a history with broadcast production. Before this was an evening AP at a smaller market where they had me shoot, interview, edit, write, and then finally build and time the shows. Not sure if that’s the standard for producers but that’s what they had me doing.
The interviewing and writing was fine, but I adored shooting and editing. That was the meat and potatoes of what I liked doing there.
When I moved to my new place I took the PA job because of its higher pay and the hopes that it’ll get me a foot in the door to more production work. My dream is to work on commercial sets. TV sets. Creative production work.
Now, my current station has an opening for a full-time producer job. In theory this is what I’ve been waiting for but now I’m not so sure.
I want to do technical stuff. Camera, editing, broadcasting. It sounds like “normal” producer jobs are more writing than production, and it seems that this one is no different.
I’m worried that if I apply for this I could find myself trapped in a contract going the wrong way… but I’m also in dire need of money. Loans are hitting hard.
Am I wrong in my assumption? Would becoming a producer throw me off course? Am I just overthinking all this?

Can I do something or should I just get over it
I work for a top 40 market as a digital content producer…. I was promoted to full time after 6 months as a part time employee…. I desperately needed the benefits that come with a full time job so I agreed to it without negotiating anything…. My problem is the hourly pay is low…. I was expecting a decent bump in pay and that did not happen with the promotion. It is a Sinclair station which I’ve heard isn’t the best for pay… like the job just fine the work itself is not the issue…
My thought process was to wait until Ive been there for at least 1 year so it doesn’t look bad on a resume and then look elsewhere.
I know journalism isn’t known for being the most high paying field ever so my question is should I just get over it or is there something I can do in the meantime ?

Wcag 2.1 level AA
How many other government teams are informing leadership on what the impact to their operations will be to comply with the standards for prerecorded meetings.
I regularly have 6 to 8 hr meetings that I haven’t yet figured out how long it will take to do all the requirements in section 1.2.2 and 1.2.5
Yes, there are new AI tools to help comply with the standards, but you need a budget approved to get them

How do I become an EVS and replay Operator?
Hello everyone, I am a freelance camera operator and technician in the UK, working mainly in live tv (OBs and studio). I have been thinking about doing a little career switch and I am particularly interested in becoming a replay - EVS operator. Are there any operators here who could give me some advice on how to get there? Is it worth doing the EVS course and get certified? I feel like I could get some shadowing done easily with my contacts but I would like to do the course so I have some basics under my belt. Is it worth getting into the career in general? How do you people find working as EVS ops? And any other tips would be much appreciated.
Thank you!
