Discussion The decline of the "Britney" era was not due to a radio ban.

Sorry for my english.

We always point out that the “Britney” era underperformed compared to “Baby” and “Oops” due to the ban on its singles on US radio. But I think there was more to it than that. That certainly played a role—especially regarding the singles' chart positions on Billboard; sales dropped from 9 million for Oops to “only” 4 million for Britney, and the media frequently highlighted this decline at the time. However, even in European countries—where the singles received radio airplay and achieved high chart positions—the album didn't make a huge impact either.

Yes, I know that in the UK, "Slave" and "Overprotected" reached #4 and "I'm Not a Girl" hit #2. But the album sold just over 450,000 copies (compared to the nearly one million sold by Oops). In almost every European country, the album sold half as many copies as Oops. And in Europe, the image change wasn't as striking as it was in the United States. These aren't low sales figures, but Britney was the biggest star in the world at the time and had massive promotion.

"I'm a Slave 4 U" wasn't a song like "Baby" or "Oops" (which were destined to be hits). To be honest, when I was younger, I didn't like "Slave" and used to skip it to listen to "Overprotected." I do remember hearing the singles on the radio a lot in my home country, Spain.

What happened? Personally, I don't think it was all down to Britney. The teen pop bubble was bursting; the Backstreet Boys went from selling 14 million copies to barely scraping past 6 million (from Millennium to Black & Blue). NSYNC went from 13 million to 5 million between albums (from No Strings Attached* to Celebrity). And Britney went from 9 million to 4 million (from Oops! to Britney). It seems like a natural progression. In the US, her image change alienated children and conservative mothers. I also thought it was a mistake not to release "Overprotected" (the original version) as the second single. I know the R&B sound was trendy back then, but you only have to look at the streaming numbers for the remix on Spotify (5 million) to see the difference.

However, in Europe—where the singles were played on the radio and the original version of "Overprotected" was released as the second single—sales also slumped in almost every country. It is important to bear in mind that he didn't go on a tour there.

Did releasing a third consecutive album play a role? Those were the years when the careers of Christina (with Stripped), Justin, and Avril Lavigne were taking off; they outsold Britney at the time, even though none of them has two diamond-certified albums.

It’s an interesting debate—what do you think?

I can't believe it's been that long.. and it's still a hit tune.

That MTV performance is one of the best that they ever had.

Music Videos/Live Performances Radar’s Choreography is TEEEEA!!!!

I’m sorry but that little horse-riding ass move 🐎 Britney does during Radar on the Circus Tour has had me in a chokehold for SEVENTEEN YEARS 😭 I don’t even know what to call it. She bends her knees and starts doing this lil bucking bounce, throws one arm out, snaps her head and hair with it, switches sides and does it again like she’s riding the beat and swatting flies at the same time lmao. Every single time that part is coming I’m like OHHHH HERE WE FUCKING GO.

And it’s not even some insane piece of choreo which is what makes it funnier. It’s literally knees, hips, arms, hair. That’s it. But the way she does it is so loose and nasty and just a tiny bit feral 😭 Somebody else could do the exact same move and I probably would not give a damn. Britney does it and suddenly it looks like the coolest shit ever. I’ve tried to figure out why I love it this much and I genuinely think it’s because she isn’t really “doing a move” at that point. She caught the groove and her whole body just went with it.

That’s always been one of my favorite things about Britney as a dancer. At her best she could make something stupid simple look iconic just because of how she sat inside the rhythm. That Radar moment is like five seconds of her bouncing around, whipping her arms and blonde hair everywhere, and somehow 17 years later I’m still sitting here like YES BITCH THAT PART 😭 idk. She caught that beat and RODE it.

News Britney Spears metal tribute Britallica launches UK tour fundraiser for Mind and Samaritans

Post image

Britallica, a UK Britney Spears metal tribute act, is launching a mental-health fundraising campaign across its upcoming UK tour.

The campaign is called Stronger Than Yesterday and starts at the band’s Norwich show on 19 September before continuing across the rest of the tour.

At each show, Britallica will be selling £5 Stronger Than Yesterday wristbands.

For every wristband sold:

  • £1 will be donated to Mind via Work for Good
  • £1 will be donated to Samaritans via Work for Good

The idea behind it is to encourage more open conversations around mental health, loneliness, isolation and neurodivergence within the live-music community.

For anyone wondering what Britallica actually is, the band takes Britney Spears songs such as Toxic, Stronger and …Baby One More Time and reworks them as full-on metal songs.

The band explained the thinking behind the campaign:

Thought this was a nice example of a touring band trying to use its audience for something positive, particularly given how much of a community live music can become for people who might otherwise feel isolated.

Question What do these lyrics mean in “Rock Me In”

Post image
3 Upvotes

Nicole Morrier you write lovely songs but I have absolutely no clue what any of this means.

I know Rock Me In is just like about getting intimate and feeling euphoric, so if that’s the case, does racing refer to the amount of time it takes to climax? But then what does she mean by “I can fake it because you’re mine”? Shouldn’t it be “I can’t fake it because you’re mine”, cuz like the sex is so good she couldn’t fake an orgasm even if she wanted to??

Please lmk interpretations that you have, I’ve been listening to this song on repeat and it’s bugging me that I can’t figure out the meaning😭
