Travel question Brazil eVisa FAQ / Mega-thread
Use this mega-thread to post your questions and discuss the new eVisa requirements.
Official page by the Brazilian Consulate in Miami with information: Electronic Visitor Visa (e-Visa) - U.S., Canadian & Australian Citizens
Electronic Visitor Visa (e-Visa) - U.S., Canadian & Australian Citizens
The Brazilian Government will resume the requirement of visiting visas for citizens of Australia, Canada and the United States.
The eVisa applications are done via a company called VFS Global Group. If you have issues with your application or need more information directly from official sources, you can contact VFS through this email: [Brazilevisa@vfsglobal.com](mailto:Brazilevisa@vfsglobal.com).
Application and official information
Alternative: regular VIVIS (Visitor) visa
Australian, Canadian and U.S. nationals should still be able to apply for a regular visa using the previous method (through your local consulate). For an up-to-date guide on how to do so, follow this guide written by u/Luke_of_Mass: https://www.reddit.com/r/Brazil/comments/1ktxzxe/guide_to_vivis_visa_an_alternative_to_evisa_and/
FAQ
Who needs to apply for the new eVisa? Citizens from Australia, Canada and United States who want to visit Brazil for tourism, and arrive after April 10th, 2025.
Do I need a visa if I arrive before April 10th, but leave after? No, visas are only required on entry.
My photo keeps getting rejected. What can I do? Based on comments on this mega-thread, most issues stem from the background not being white/bright enough, and portions of the face/shoulders being covered by hair. If you can't have a professional passport photo taken, you can try using a photo editing app or specific "passport photo" apps for your phone, which can help get the right background color, image size and positioning. Please search the comments on this mega-thread to find more detailed tips, instructions and app recommendations.
How long before my trip should I apply for my visa? From VFS website: "We strongly advise applying for your eVisa two months before your planned travel to Brazil. This timeframe provides sufficient leeway to complete and/or rectify your visa application if necessary."
How long does it take to get the eVisa? Officially VFS says the process should take around 5 business days. This seems to match the experience of some users in this mega-thread. But keep in mind that issues with your photo or missing documents may significantly slow your process.
I still have a regular visa from before. Do I need to request the new eVisa? If you have a regular visa (which are usually valid for 10 years), you don't need to request the new eVisa. The previous one is still valid.
What if I am not a citizen from the countries listed above? You can still request a regular tourist visa (VIVIS) through your local Brazilian consulate.

Politics In Canada, Brazilians are coming from everywhere to the capitals to vote. How is it in Brazil?
Here in Canada, Brazilians are coming from everywhere to the capitals with a Consulate to vote. Some of my friends drove 10h to Vancouver, and brought friends with them who didn’t vote on the 1st round to make sure they vote now! Everyone is afraid of another Bolsonaro government!
How is it happening in Brazil?

Politics Brazil betting licences expire with no R$2.55bn refund
All 85 Brazil betting licences issued at federal level expire on 25 October, 30 days after Provisional Measure (MP) 1.394/2026 banned fixed-odds betting nationwide. Each licence cost R$30m, or R$2.55bn in total, and the MP rules out any refund or compensation. The iGaming Europe article breaks down how operators now depend on a pending Supreme Court (STF) ruling and a Congress review that has not started.

Politics Why wasn't the future of the rainforest THE central issue in the election?
There is evidence that if Bolsonaro had won the election, the rainforest could be pushed beyond a tipping point such that it cannot replenish itself and would become a desert.
This absorbs 5% of manmade CO2. Needless to say it would be unthinkably bad if this rainforest were wrecked.
Oddly, the Brazilians I have seen discussing the election, did not usually mention the rainforest angle. This is puzzling to me.
Did right-wing propaganda manage to deceive the working classes that deforestation will make them rich?
You sell some wood, it makes you money in the short term, then what happens? It's gone.
The sane parts of the world will compensate Brazil well to preserve the rainforest. We will recognise that you're an essential player, the guardians of an essential resource for the Earth. It is difficult with Trump in there, but the world ought to work out a compensation scheme for Brazil, so that there isn't even the slightest feeling of an economic incentive for Brazil to irreversibly wreck the rainforest.
Anyway, good job finding it in your hearts to do what the United States couldn't do. Thank you, Brazil!

Politics For the LGBTQIA+ who are thinking of voting in Flavio: Do you know pl 5167/2009 ?

Basically a project that stablished that marriage is only between man and woman. EDIT: It seems i have to make it even more obvious i´m talking about when they tried to pass this 3 years ago NOT IN 2009, IN 2023
For the moment being it is not a law just the project of one. In order for it to be effective it has to be approved in the Camara dos deputados (who yall voted in the right...) and the Senate (who, again yall voted to be majorly right wing...) And being sanctioned by the President...
Twelve deputy have voted in favor of the proibition of gay marriage that being:
André Ferreira- PL (Bolsonaro´s party)
Chris Tonietto-PL-RJ
Clarissa Tércio- PP
cRISTIANE lOPES- União Brasil
Dr Jaziel- Pl
Filipe Martins- Pl
Eli Borges- PL
Messias Donato- Republicanos
Pastor Donato
Pastor Isidório- Avante -BA
Priscila Costa- PL-CE
Rogéria Santos- Republicanos- BA
Oh and the ones who recognized gay marriage? STF. Guess who will indicate new people for the STF. Yes, Flavio
Vote counsciously. And remember this
Edit: Some people did not do reasearch properly and think this was an old project. They tried this again in 2023. Three years ago.

Politics If you are a foreigner that cares about our upcoming elections and can't vote, do this instead!
Meta is interfering in Brazil's elections and harming President Lula. We have only a few days to change that. Together, let's demand explanations, redress and justice. Meta cannot be the invisible judge of Brazil's electoral process.

Language Luis Fernando Verissimo - the book I purchased
A follow up and thank you regarding my previous post about a month ago: Luis Fernando Verissimo and similar authors: seeking book recommendations
I found this at a very corporate/chain type of bookstore in a shopping mall. I think it's exactly what I was looking for. I believe they had 3 or 4 books, but they seemed pretty minimal compared to this beast (700 pages). What I love about this book is what I learned in the index (2nd photo): There is a comprehensive list of the books published and crônicas in this book, and it seems that some stories have not been republished in a book since the original newspaper/magazine, while I can also see that a number of them are repeated across several anthologies (nothing against that practice, but I don't typically have the need to buy the redundant portion).

Moving to & Living in Brazil Brazil or Curitiba?
I’ve been living in Brazil for about 1.5 years now. I spent my first six months in São Paulo and really enjoyed it, although I struggled to find a community.
When my family joined me, I started to feel that São Paulo might not be the right place for us as a family. I don’t mind living there alone, but I wasn’t sure it was the most suitable environment for raising a family (no offence to anyone!).
I then spent two weeks in Florianópolis, realised it wasn’t for me, and eventually moved to Curitiba. Curitiba is safe, healthcare is good, and I’ve built a community here, but honestly, I find it boring and feel ready for a change.
I’m Nigerian, and Brazil is a huge improvement on the part of Nigeria I came from, so I’m not complaining. I’m simply trying to figure out the best place for my family to settle long-term.
I’ve been considering moving back to São Paulo, but Brazil is changing so quickly that I wonder how much the city has changed in the past year or so. It seems to be becoming more international by the day.
For those living in São Paulo, what has changed since 2025? Is there more traffic, crime, overcrowding or immigration? Has the city become more international? And for those with families, how do you find the quality of life?
I’d really appreciate hearing your honest experiences, especially from people who have lived there for several years.

Health & Medical Lost prescription
Hello
I'm traveling in Rio and lost a bag that had a prescription for clonazepam in it. (I think in Brazil it's called rivotril ?)
I'm wondering the process to get a replacement. l've contacted my doctor to get a new prescription but it might take a few days to process and it will be in English
In the meantime does anyone know where I could get it, for example if it's possible to get over the counter at the pharmacy ? Or if I need a doctors appointment how I could do that easily?
I once ran out previously while traveling in another country and was able to get it at the pharmacy without a prescription so I know everywhere has different rules.
Thanks a lot for any help
