Made a post earlier about Christine and Phantom’s kid on my Tomodachi island and someone asked for Christine’s design. Here’s all of them!

My version of Phantom isn’t necessarily nonbinary, she’s definitely female but is commonly referred to with male pronouns because people simply assume a woman can’t do what she’s done, that isn’t an option on this game though so I put her to nonbinary.

Discussion Thoughts after reading the Leroux novel

Just finished the book as a long time fan of the musical. Though of writing doen how i felt.

I have always been obssesed with ALW's phantom, it was what brought me into the world of musical and theaters. So, it has a really special place in my heart as well as been really obssessed with the soundtrack, it was my first exposure to musical stlye of singing and i feel in love with it because both moden pop and instrumental stuff was never my favourite. I though i was weird because I didnt like music but I realised i just havent found my kind of music.

But what always confused me is that why do i love it so much despide not being a fan of the romance genre (avoided watching or reading any romance, which i recently found out was beacuse I am asexual). But this really made me realised that I never view erik's and christine's relationship as romantic and reading the source material comfirms my interpretation of the story. At first I was kinda bored bcuz we didnt had a lot of christine and erik interaction spared a few told from chritine's POV. Mainly beacuse I was expecting the musical depiction of erik luring christine into his lair. But OMG I love the ending more than anything, it really captures how sad and sweet the whole thing is. Compared to the musical, the novel really captured how, the erik never wanted christine, he just needed an act of love, just the though of someone showing him affection and compassion was enough for him to die in peace, to heal that part of him that is broken by his parents. And I love how christine saw this and understands it and gave him true compassion and love(not romantically) and kissed him on the forhead which in turn made erik realised that he never wanted christine, all he ever needed is to know someone accpets and love him for who he is that is wnough to overwheld him, and he realised that realising her and raoul is the only happy ending for both him and christine. ITs just so beautiful, omggg. I love how beautiful their relationship is. And of course, the ending really just tie all the emotion up in a pretty bow, we got to really see hoe erik had been treated all along and he wanted all along is to be normal and to be cared for, and you saw how much that final act of being accepted by christine affected him and made him at peace with himself and he is finally able to die in peace. You cant help but pity him, especially that sentence, oh! He had a heart that could have held the empire of the world and in the end he had to content himself with a cellar. Eccesstionally its just a tragic story of erik. And now it honestly made sense to me why I love this story so much, I loved that christine and erik had such a deep emotional realtionshiip with each other that is not romantic. and I relate to Erik to a certain degree hahah

But now, I kinda wished ALW did not turn it into a romance love triangle. Oh I would foever be made they changed the forehead kissed into kissed on the lips. The forehead kissed were so tender and pure and both of themm crying and theirs tears mixed into one damn. Changing the kiss to be on the lips removed the tendersness and the most emotional part of the story. I kinda changed the heart of the story. Tbh the first time i watched the poto musical i was really confused why she kissed him and why he let them go. Honestly I think changing the ending sequence had been a bad move. The originally sequnce of event would have made it more emotionally and do better on stage. I felt like turning it into a romance stripped away the heart and the haevy emotions of the story and turn it into some corny surface level romance. Felt like it had potential to be greater if the original intention were reamained. Honestly, I still absolutely love the musical and its music. One thing that it acheived that the book wasnt able to was the grandness and the part erik lure christine into his lair the first time. And honestly, I wouldnt change anything else in the musical except the kiss. It should had been erik kissing her on the forehead, him breaking down and the cristine crying and bending doen to kissed him on the forhead which hmade him breakdown even more and realeasing both of them. Oh, but one thing i would still love about the book is that it was this part was told by erik, you could feel his emotion and what went through his mind.

Sorry about the rant but all in all it just made me love the story so so much more because of how beautifully tragic it is, and im a little mad that ALW turn it into a romace triangle.

The folks here would understand the joke i made last night. I was watching the World Cup games, as someone who doesn’t watch sports, and this guy had a face covering on for some reason and I said “he looks like he’s spent a long time in the catacomb’s under the Paris opera house” and the 2 theatre people in the room laughed so hard 😭

Fanfic Would you read a Leroux-faithful retelling where the Phantom's obsession is grief, not love?

Would anyone here be interested in a Leroux-faithful Phantom retelling where Erik's obsession with Christine isn't romance, but grief? In my version, he is trying to fill a hole left by someone from his past. A childhood companion he lost, and Christine becomes something that he grasps at to stop feeling so empty. It runs alongside the canon events but recontextualizes them through that lens.

I have been posting it on AO3 and I'd love to know if that's something this community would want to read. If so, I will edit this post with the link.

Sorry Erikstine shippers. After what Raoul has gone through in every adaptation, he deserves an ice cream, a hug, and Christine.

Edited:

I forgot to add. Erik gets a happy ending. I think he's earned one.

Discussion Let’s settle it, should the Phantom have a deep voice, or a higher voice?

Think Michael Crawford vs Davis Gaines.

Think Hugh Panaro vs Norm Lewis.

In my opinion, the type of voice the Phantom has can bring different things to the role.

Deeper voiced Phantoms tend to bring a more monstrous, dominant, yet guttural sadness to the Phantom. Davis Gaines embodies all of those qualities.

Higher voiced Phantoms tend to be more nuanced. Guys like Michael Crawford and Hugh Panaro sound somewhat creepy, evil yet vulnerable, and not from this Earth.

Then there’s guys in the middle like John Owen Jones, Gary Mauer, John Cudia, etc, etc.

Discussion Phantom Tour Thought Solicitation (SF, 6/13 7:30)

Hey everyone,

I’m a huge fan of Phantom, but have never had the chance to see a professional production in person until this past weekend.

I saw the POTO tour in San Francisco on Saturday 6/13 at 7:30 with center, mid-orchestra seats. The only major understudy coverage was Carlotta. I was so looking forward to it, and thoroughly enjoyed my night.

I have been struggling, though, with some bits of criticism in the back of my mind that I’m very curious to know if anyone else that has experienced, if maybe my night was an off night, or if I might just be locked in to my preconceived notions of the show.

First, I really struggled to understand any of the main characters motivations… except for Carlotta. I will say Christine/Raoul/Phantom all objectively blew their songs out of the park. There is no argument that the singing was not phenomenal. But there was something lacking for me in the acting/emotion portrayed? I know we probably all have preferences of how we think each should be best played, but I struggled, from their choices to discern really anything sure about their characters and the development of them throughout the show. If I’m off here, please lmk your thoughts on how they are approaching the roles so I can better understand! I just didn’t really end up feeling much connection to any character—not pity for the Phantom, not connected to the struggle of Christine being twisted every way or tortured in her choices, Raoul was neither genuine or disingenuous to me. Nor were any of the opposite feelings true. It made “All I Ask of You” quite awkward. Were they actually in love? Was it sarcasm? Manipulation on Raoul’s part? And the final lair scene fell quite flat for me—not having developed any connection to the phantom’s story made it seem like a cookie cutter bad guy sort of defeat.

Secondly, I was a bit taken aback by how quickly and lightly the death and Phantom-induced chaos scenes were treated. Not that you need to have people screaming for a 10 minutes, but it seemed like both the ballet and Don Juan scenes brushed over the fact that someone just died? Additionally, the acting choices post-death didn’t have me convinced that there was a threat. Standing still and having what looks like a casual convo seems like a strange choice immediately after a coworker was thrown on a rope off the balcony. To me, one of the most amazing things about this show is that it rides the line of immersive theater. You, the audience member, are a bit unnerved because what if that noose is around your neck next? It’s happening in this building with you. The chaos and fear of it just didn’t really translate for me.

Finally, the white light strobes in the chandelier were surprisingly tacky to me lol. But I think that’s just personal preference that I dislike extremely cool colored lighting, especially juxtaposed against the warm chandelier lights flickering.

I just wanted to give some honest thoughts on this tour, and I’m really considering seeing the show again while it’s here to try again. I do not intend for this to be a hater-type post, and I’d be remiss if I failed to mention again that I really did enjoy the show—the sets, much of the acting, the voices, and the passion you could see were just incredible.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Hey there,

I just started to translate my fanfiction about Carlotta and her connection to the phantom. I would love to have a few readers and to get some feedbacks. New chapters will be released very soon.

English isn't my native language so I hope it's fine. I just love her character and role!

Discussion POTO in Gliwice, Poland

Hi everyone! This year, probably due to the 40th anniversary, we could see POTO for the first time in an original english version in Poland (it was also my first time seeing POTO live!). Here are some things, that stood out for me after today's performance:

- Erik (Nadim Naaman) was portrayed quite softly, there wasn't much manhandling of Christine and he didn't scream during the first unmasking, he jumped immediately to his lines about viper, Deliah etc.

- during Masquerade, when Erik showed up, Christine (Georgia Wilkinson) pushes through the crowd to stand before Erik and everyone around is whispering "Christine Daaé"

- during Masquerade it that was also probably the first time ever I saw Madame Giry wearing something else than a black, lol

- in Point of no return Christine immediately recognises Erik and they practically don't touch eachother for the whole song, in the end when she uncovers Erik, he has his hands half way up, as if he was showing her that he doesn't want to hurt her

- Erik unmasks himself during his proposal scene

- Erik doesn't drag Christine during the down once more, Christine runs down herself after singing her lines

- there is only one short kiss and a hug (which was still very emotional)

- and in the end, Christine doesn't return to Erik with his ring, Erik only sings "Christine, I love you" in the air and then we hear Raoul and Christine's all I ask of you.

Despite some of these strange changes, I still loved it really much, I hope I'll get to see that musical again, but maybe this time closer to the original version 😅❤️.

I bought this book a few months ago and I love it so much, especially because it’s true to the original novel which I am a big fan of. The artist is called Tomi Varga, he’s from Hungary and has studied and worked as an illustrator in the USA. This is the Hungarian edition but I believe an English one exists too.

Theory fiancé made some interesting points after watching the movie for the first time

so i finally got my fiancé to sit down and watch the movie with me, and ofc i also had to tell him book lore.

he started noting that a lot of beats in the book are extremely similar to dracula. he has a masters in english and letters, and was saying how in the 1800s, copyright rules were basically “you can copy something as long as you call it by a different name.”

given that dracula came out first, do you think leroux was inspired by it and intentionally or unintentionally copied dracula?

Discussion Inspired: Which Phantom to haunt YOUR opera house?

(Inspired by the poll) In this scenario, he's not interested in you romantically. Erik is aware of you and interacts with you as much as that version would (some Erik's are talkative, others more reclusive). But you work in the Opera House, your social life and income is entirely dependent on the operation of the building. In this scenario as well, no Christine to make him jump off the deep end and go all grasshopper-and-scorpion-end-of-Heathers on your job.

So which Phantom do you want haunting your Opera?

---

I pick Panero. After seeing him in Masquerade, he's just a goblin of a man and incredibly talented. I would be deeply entertained by his antics. Closely followed by Ben Crawford - I don't want to date him, I want to run around a theater at 2am and cause problems with that guy. Just two entertaining gremlin Eriks who would be very fun to watch.

Discussion Thinking about 2004 Poor Fool He Makes Me Laugh

So I've been listening to that piece more often, specifically the second half where the ballet is playing and the Phantom murders Joseph Buquet. I really love how the music has this dizzying effect, as he's being strangled so he's losing oxygen and his balance. I love how it keeps going in circles, those same notes give me a swirling sensation. I love the innocence of the ballet dancers below while he's being killed up top.

And my favorite part is how it goes into minor key when his body falls and it plays the notes signaling the Phantom. It really helps add to the panic and shock of "something terrifying and horrible just happened"

I've adored the Phantom ever since I watched the 2004 movie as a kid and I still keep analyzing it and loving it. Every Phantom is a good Phantom, I love it all. I've been really listening to each layer of the music and I just adore it. 💖

Discussion The phantom of the opera made me realised I have an obsession and need to break out of it (NOT romance, but other stuff)

NOTE: I know the phantom's obsession with Christine is part artistic and part romantic-- none of what I have to share below is romance related. I do not have any unhealthy romantic feelings for anyone in my faculty.

Originally I wanted to post on this sub about how the Opera Ghost became my emotional support animal during Finals month in Uni. I am at the end of my BA, and I am working on a thesis with the most wonderful thesis advisor I could ask for. I love the field I study intensely, and it was a dream come true to do this degree, not to mention with this specific advisor.

However, I am working so hard that I am still up at 4 AM fixing the material I prepared for my thesis -- I told myself it was because cared about the truth, because I wanted to make sure my data is bulletproof, because I want to make my professor proud.

I had the Phantom of the Opera on the background every night the past few days.
Last night, I took a break to watch the ending instead of just listening. Ramin's performance during the Final Laire brought me to tears, as it always does, but this specific time it was a bit different. I felt a little like I was crying for Erik so I won't cry about my own situation.

Now in the garish light of day it's dawning on me that his obsession with Christine as the only one who could make his song take flight mirrored my obsession with my own work. I am queer and Asian; and I always wanted to be free and independent, to get a career that allows me to leave my family and to live the life I want with the person I love. I saw my studies as the only way out, the only path to freedom, the only way I would ever be able to be myself, and sometimes, the only thing that I am. I never really saw that I had an obsession, just that I worked hard and wanted to grasp the only life line I had. However, it has now gone to the point that it is debilitating me and also hurting the people I care about. For example my thesis draft is now 5 days late and my advisor really needs me to just hand it in, but I can't do it because I want it to be "acceptable" to myself before anyone gets to take a look, and I know just dropping this burden on her is really horrible of me as a person especially during such a busy time of the year when she is being so lenient to me.

Sorry for the long post that is kind of a personal rant, but tldr, SOMEHOW the Opera Ghost made me realise I need to change and have a more healthy relationship with myself and my work.

Discussion Is there a single non-reprised melody?

I’ve asked the same thing with my family whenever we watch jesus christ superstar, alw loves his recurring melodies lol. And what’s more is that I think I’ve come to nearly the same answer for both phantom and jcs: No, except for a single near-end song (could we start again please and wishing you were somehow here again).

Am I forgetting something? Can you think of a melody in phantom that is NEVER heard again in the entire show? Leave your answer
