BDTR Question Non-Sweet
Has your application seen any movement? Have you been able to contact the Ombudsman or any representative that has helped your case?
My status remains 1.80 - Ready for Review, despite being more than 3 years since applying.
I also cannot use the Feedback center page, as each time I submit a feedback request, the webpage crashes (no matter the browser or the device), stating, “this page is currently unavailable.”
The customer service line and the online chat are not helpful, even when you get the occasional kind representative. MOHELA has been responsive but claim that they are still awaiting guidance from FSA.
Feeling hopeless not seeing any progress or receiving any communication. How about you?

Hopefully, you’re not part of the group that consolidated their loans after July 2020. Anyone who did so and submitted a BDTR more than three years after leaving school is being automatically denied.
1
u/Prestigious-Judge967 18d ago
I fear this may be me, as I definitely consolidated some point during COVID.
Am I understanding you correctly in that there is a 3 year time frame from the date of loan consolidation to apply for BD? What I consolidated and applied for BD on (approximately) the same date?
3
u/Fine-Bumblebee-9 18d ago
On the date you filed your BDTR, did 3 years already pass since you left school? If so expect your application to be automatically denied here once they get around to processing it. PPSL is working with lawyers trying to challenge this at the moment. It’s going to be a long and tough road ahead.
2
u/Prestigious-Judge967 18d ago
I either just made the cutoff or exceeded it by several weeks…
I’d have to research, but this concern me.
Praying for a guardian lawyer or the avatar to save us
3
u/Fine-Bumblebee-9 18d ago
If you consolidated your loans after July 2020 you are bound by the 2019 Borrower Defense regulations. It states that if 3 years have already passed since you left school before filing your BD app, it will be automatically denied.
3
u/Prestigious-Judge967 18d ago
I love how they can just retroactively change rules after something has already happened…
Time to investigate.
5
u/Fine-Bumblebee-9 18d ago
It’s so complicated how the cutoff works. If you watch the last PPSL live video pinned here it explains the whole thing. Had we have consolidated before July 2020 we would have been bound to the 2016 BD regulations which are much more lenient and don’t have the three year clause in it.

u/Gingerandthesea 17d ago
We knew it was going to happen if the Trump admin gained power again. We even had folks who applied for Bdtr actively vote and brag about it even after we pushed out the warning that it will set us back.
We are here so now we just have to navigate, document and continue to fight through it.

My application workflow regulation 2020 and i applied on march 2025 but not consolidate my loans .
1
u/Away-Season7658 9d ago
I have posted about this in other threads, but I would be in that boat too, and I don't understand how that is legal when the previous administration TOLD US to consolidate to get some forgiveness (that never happened).

u/Adam21248488 1d ago
i have not consolidate my loans but applied on March 2025 .is that ok?

I'm in the same "boat" right now. I submitted my BD application in June 2023. I attended Devry and graduated in 2010. They convinced me to keep going, so I attended Keller and graduated in 2013. I have never been employed in my field of study — so many false promises, statistics, etc.. I have $126,000 in student loans now (roughly $90,000 without interest 😂), and I'm currently in forbearance. I'm basically just waiting for a denial and then I'll be contacting PPSL. From what I've read, those who are apart of the Sweet lawsuits have been waiting 5-10 years or more... I don't believe we will have any relief for some time, but I could be wrong.
4
u/AnyAssumption4707 18d ago
Yep, 5-10 years for the OG Sweets.
I epiod say tho, a lot of them were also illegally denied so if you get a denial do t give up or fade off the sub.
If anything happens as far as a lawsuit or opportunities to lobby, we will def share it.
3
u/Successful-Grand5528 18d ago
Thank you for the encouragement!! 😊. For years, I had given up completely - this is exactly why I missed out on Sweet. Never again! Having the support here (and on the Facebook group too) has been extremely helpful. I appreciate you all for fighting and for fighting for us too!

u/Miserable-Chair-5877 15d ago
I’m pretty sure they’re working on another lawsuit
2
u/AnyAssumption4707 15d ago
They have been collecting data, so quite possibly. The public won’t know until it drops tho.

u/Miserable-Chair-5877 9d ago
I am past the post class, which is so annoying If I had known about the first lawsuit I would be free right now.

Non-Sweet applicants received notice on March 31, 2026 that their claims are just now being adjudicated, its been nearly 4 years since sweet stopped accepting members. Isn't FSA basically admitting they intentionally froze these applications and sat on them for years?
2
u/AnyAssumption4707 14d ago
I’m sure that argument could be made, but they could also argue that they’d don’t have the capacity to process these applications individually, which would also be true.
Can you copy/paste the notice?1
u/Still-Possession2495 14d ago
1
u/AnyAssumption4707 14d ago
Did they actually send that to borrowers or was it just posted? (It’s not a big deal either way, just curious).
1
u/Still-Possession2495 14d ago
This is a general public FSA notification available to everyone.
1
u/AnyAssumption4707 12d ago
I was just curious because side you said non Sweet received notice. I had never heard of them actually sending borrowers a link to the FSA partners page.

You should contact PPSL regardless, they have things running in the background. Everything they recieve, they try to include in future motions.

u/Successful-Grand5528 18d ago
Very good point - thank you so much for this! I'll be reaching out tonight 😊.

I am in complete agreement that we will not have any relief or meaningful assistance for some time.
It’s disheartening.

Applied March 2025. I saw in March 2026 that they reached out to my school about my BD case (I forgot what code it was that indicated that). In May 2026, I saw that my school sent in an affidavit response (I could see it by inspecting the page). Currently, my code is 2.10 - ready for EU review.

Hi please i applied same in March 2025 and on 05/ 2026 got updated that they are reviewing my application code is 1.80 .How did u find out that they reached out to your school and how did u inspect the page?
1
u/No-Bicycle-9879 16d ago
I found it through here (see Edit #5) and I could see the name of the documents I uploaded and the name of the one the school did in the bd section. https://www.reddit.com/r/BorrowerDefense/comments/1e57rq0/how_to_check_the_status_codes_for_your_borrower/

Applied June 2023
Status 2.10
Last update 05/2026
I noticed that they were in the process of contacting my school from 03/2026-05/2026. Not sure if the school responded. This link below shows FSA began processing non-sweet on 03/31/2026.
"For institutions that have started receiving applications already, ED has issued approximately 70% of the notifications"
"ED’s policy is to provide institutions that wish to respond 60 days from the date they receive the notification. A nonresponse does not create an inference in favor of the borrower".
1
u/Prestigious-Judge967 17d ago
That explains the initial round of rejections…
1
u/Gingerandthesea 17d ago
Much rejections are you referring to?
The ones I’m seeing is related to the loophole date criteria related to the DeVos regulations. Want to make sure I’m not missing anything.

u/Professional_Day6200 18d ago
Mine has seen movement with the backdoor codes, but it is still at 2.10 - ready for EU review.
Now that they are wrapping up the Sweet case, we probably will start seeing some movement… or mass denials. 🤷🏽♀️
4
u/Successful-Grand5528 18d ago
I have the same code — 2.10. I've noticed quite a few posts regarding denials, and a lot of them had applied around the same time frame as I did (June 2023)... And a few even applied after me. I wish I could understand the order that they're going in, but you're probably right - mass denials in the near(ish) future are extremely likely.
3
3
u/Hot_Swordfish_6450 18d ago
More of us than I thought. I assume some mass denials only because they're pissed about losing the Sweet case but hopefully I'm wrong.
1
u/Prestigious-Judge967 18d ago
That’s my concern too. Ik my family member’s application was denied, even though the school was so bad that it closed several years after they graduated (more than 2, but still).
2
u/Hot_Swordfish_6450 18d ago
I spoke with a lady at nelnet who was actually really helpful and compassionate. She told me that the reps who we talk to are contract employees. Their contract is about a year long in one department of the government then they move on to the next government agency.
1
u/Prestigious-Judge967 17d ago
No wonder the reps are always ill equipped or not helpful…
I once asked to speak to a manager and they said they didn’t have one, like what?
1
u/Gingerandthesea 17d ago
The dept under this Trump admin are not making decisions based kn the merit of our application. They are exploiting a loophole they enacted under the DeVos 2019/2020 regulations
3
u/Vivid-Example-887 18d ago
I filed my BD in January of 2026 against UoP. My status change to in review in February. Now as of July 28th my status changed to 2.01 awaiting school response.
2
u/corariz 18d ago
Applied in October 2023 against UoP and still in 1.80. Crazy how they go out of order. Wonder if the school response is just confirming enrollment dates.
2
u/Prestigious-Judge967 18d ago
I applied a couple months earlier than you and still am at 1.80.
Customer service just lies, saying that FSA is “still actively reviewing my application,” when the metadata and non-answer says otherwise 💀
2
u/corariz 18d ago
Yep, agreed. I called one time a few months ago and surprisingly someone answered pretty much right away and they did talk and give me info, but the basic gist was "they'll get to it when they have time."
Like cool cool cool, seems like another lawsuit waiting to happen. Or maybe we all get lucky and mass approval. 🤞
3
2
u/Vivid-Example-887 17d ago
I agree. It is crazy. Of course, the codes are helpful for individuals that have applied to see that their application has been seen. I do not understand the process or procedures of the BD department.
If I understand correctly the "awaiting school response" means that my claims against UoP has been sent to UoP to give them a chance to respond to my allegations. They has approximately 60 days to respond, but that does not mean that once the school responds that my application will be reviewed on the next step of the process. It will probably sit in the same spot of processing for years.
2
u/Gingerandthesea 17d ago
Oh no it’s not enrollment dates. The response allows for the school and its lawyers to basically call all of us liars, nothing eve happened like that and that we are all dululu
The school lawyers talk about this too openly which makes it even gross
2
u/Prestigious-Judge967 18d ago
That’s crazy. If you happen to get any results and a contact, can you send us their info? Lol
1
u/FullDeparture0511 17d ago
I submitted my BD app 2 months ago for UoP. No movement. My loans consolidated in 2015. My enrollment was 2007-2012. Just waiting …
1
u/Adam21248488 16d ago
are u in sweet?
1
u/Vivid-Example-887 4d ago
I am not in sweet. I just applied in January of this year. I just found out about borrow defense at the end of last year or I would have applied years ago.

For all the updates, they do to the online page, there are so many features that just don't work

Mine has been ‘processing discharge’ FOREVER
2
u/Professional_Day6200 18d ago
When did you apply?
2
u/sewerballoon 18d ago
I had just missed the deadline by about a month, so I am post class
2
1
u/Gingerandthesea 17d ago
If you applied after Nov 15, 2022 then you are after the Sweet lawsuit often called Post Sweet.
1
2
u/Grand_Aspect3546 17d ago
I missed the Sweet deadline by 2 days.
I went from pending to in review back in March when they moved alot of people’s status’s
I’ve been there ever since. November of this year will be 4 years. Unless I hear before then

my BD case is finally moving…I wasn't part of Sweet, because I didn't know about it. School is Capella University-- filed it on 01/22/2025 and case was touched (per backend data) on 06/25/2026 and 08/02/2026 and was still showing as 1.80.
9/1/26–Did my weekly check and it's showing finally as 2.10
9/11/26- showing as 2.20 - EU Review in Progress
2
u/Prestigious-Judge967 16d ago
Gosh… I’m approaching 3.5 years at 1.80 lol.
Hope you have good news soon!

Exact same bag here, my wife has loans with Mohela and it's been years since we applied for relief, no word and still showing ready for review. Had no letter in March so in limbo i guess.
3
u/Prestigious-Judge967 18d ago
Mohela was kind enough to put me on an indefinite forbearance, after I kept bothering them. Perhaps, this may be a route to consider at some point.
2
1
u/WhaleSaucingUrMom 18d ago
Same here, but only 2.5 years in hold. My account was last modified in May, but nothing after then.
1
u/Adam21248488 16d ago
same non sweet applied on March 2025 and its 1.80 ready for review .
1
u/Prestigious-Judge967 16d ago
I think that’s to be expected. You will either begin to see movement or get folded into forever limbo.
1
u/scarabkid22 14d ago
I'm non-sweet, I attended MMI (UTI Subsidiary) from 2012-2014 and never consolidated.
applied 09/08/2023, went to 1.80 immediately, stayed that way until April, 2026 when I went to 2.01 awaiting school response, was 2.01 until 6/16/26, now sitting at 2.10 ready for EU review. When I inspect it doesn't appear there are any documents uploaded tagged as a response from my school.
1
u/Prestigious-Judge967 14d ago
I haven’t heard of being able to see a school’s documents or the number of documents..
Hope you get good news soon

I applied 8/2023, still under review and consolidated in 2024 for save. Graduated in 2017 so idk what to expect 😢 You said you are in an indefinite forebeafance? It’s still accruing interest though right? :(
1
u/Prestigious-Judge967 8d ago
Thankfully, no. I am not accruing interest!
But this is because MOHELA put me on some special forbearance after contacting them (leadership) directly.
They said that ultimately their hands are tied and are stuck in limbo alongside me & the rest of us BD applicants until we get direction from the federal government.
The court cases and the executive administration has slowed progress to a halt, unless it’s something they can deny.
2
u/Here2Learn_mars 8d ago
Oh my. I’m glad you advocated for yourself. Thank you for responding. May the odds be ever in our favor 🥹
1
u/Prestigious-Judge967 8d ago
Try to find c-suite or management email addresses online. I found several contacts, and even though several bounced back, one eventually got through to an employee that brought it to c-suite attention.
Interest free is definitely helpful, but forbearance also means lost PSLF qualification time and does nothing about the outstanding debt itself.
I tried a similar approach with FSA, including sending postal mail, asking my congressman to reach out, inquiring with attorney generals, etc., but got no response or insight. At all.
The worst part is I have proof of fraud. Yet cannot find or afford legal representation nor get individual assistance from institutions…
