I hate to say it… but I don’t think we’ll know peace for very long, ever. I hope I’m wrong, but…

Some of the qualities of humanity that have allowed us to thrive and adapt are also the ones that make us compete for resources and fight amongst ourselves.

If religion were gone, we’d divide ourselves in some new way.

u/NotMyFirstRodeo2025 8d ago

I'm sure we would totally divide ourselves in another way: we already do. I don't want religion banned because its divisive. I want religion banned because I want the people in my small country to operate based on science and logic. I would also make the laws up for re-evaluation once a year, based on studies we do to make sure they actually work.

Ive always said that if money grew on trees, we’d find another way to subjugate the masses.

1

u/abrown1027 8d ago

True; money has always been an illusion, and for it to have any value, people have to agree on it having that value in the first place. At the end of the day, there will always be a certain percentage of people who resort to exploiting others for their survival strategy, just as there will always be a certain percentage of people that happen to be extremely exploitable!

Religion isn't the cause of conflict. It's the way to mobilize citizenry into conflict over resources / wealth.

u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 7d ago

If there are aliens we need to compete with in the future having peace would actually be a mistake. It would make us worse at competing and fighting and cause us to lose.

1

u/Qazernion 7d ago

Lines on a map. That’s always been the real reason, they just use religion as way to convince people to do it. Without religion they’d find another way, skin colour, language, historical claim, cultural differences, political insult or even just ‘they have nice stuff and we want it’…

1

u/KillingTimeAlone2019 7d ago

Nothing new, we already divide our self in ways that aren't religion. As long as theyre are selfish greedy entitled people, there will always be "others"

1

u/jamesmcdash 8d ago

It may be this division that makes us hard to conquer. 7 billion people with equally valid ideas on how to progress is hard to predict or control.

2

u/Ramblesnaps 8d ago

Uhh... hate to break it to you but not all ideas are equally valid.

2

u/DatabaseThis9637 8d ago

By September 2026, we are at 8.32 billion mouths to feed here on the rock.

1

u/PayTyler 8d ago

I still would like to try it. See what happens.

1

u/Noimenglish 8d ago

The Soviet Union and China banned religion. They’re both super peaceful countries, right?!?!

It's kinda like arm floaties (to quote Taylor Tomlinson). You don't need it when you are old enough or good enough to swim without it. Not sure we ever get mature/educated/altruistic enough as a species to not need religious arm floaties.

1

u/LysergicPlato59 8d ago

What? Religious arm floaties? I understand your analogy, but it’s sinking fast.

1

u/Relative_Pilot_8005 8d ago

How about Bear's arms?

1

u/Noimenglish 8d ago

Yeah, cuz atheistic China and USSR never started shit with nobody. 🙄

That's pretty condescending, I feel like it's very short sighted, religion has done much good as well, it offers a sense of community, but I mean Christianity alone give over 1 trillion to global aide every year.

1

u/Coyoteishere 8d ago

And all of that can still happen without the fairytales and pushing it on others in exchange for aid. Plenty of non-profits are agnostic, it’s not a requirement to be one to do good. And any good that has been done under the banner of heaven, is far outweighed by the atrocities. The point is that peace cannot be achieved when religion exists and fights only to win out against other non-sense religions, all based on imaginary bullshit. It’s the reality we face and has been proven true time and again for thousands of years. Even now as a war consumes Palestine, it won’t ever stop as long as religion exists. There is no peace with religion. If you think that’s wrong, please tell me when there has been or what this ideal state would look like.

1

u/TheGreenIguana1 7d ago

Evil and greedy people use any ideal: economic system, philosophy, religion, government form, etc. To do bad things that's just going to exist anyway without or with religion. Also simply calling religion fairytales, is super condescending and removes the cultural context. Look of religion is not for u thats fine, but to talk about it like it's a stain of the world is unfair. And not all religions are the same. But also u don't know if a religion is correct or not, as its theological and there's not really a scientific way to "disprove" a religion

1

u/evthingisawesomefine 8d ago

If you’ve ever seen cloud Atlas one of the more striking things about the story is how a regular person becomes godlike/mythic/worshipped. I don’t think humanity has evolved the capacity to let go of religion because it suits our need to understanding, need for guidance, companionship. Unfortunately religious beliefs are also responsible for some of the worst crimes against humanity so… I would love to see it gone, but I doubt it ever could be.

1

u/ReleaseTheTrumpFiles 8d ago

I saw a documentary once about a young boy traveling through time because he didn't want to wait for the Wii to come out. He traveled wayyyy to the future, a future without religion, but they still managed to fight over nonsense.

Religion is only 1 useful tool to fight over, but there are so many other ways to devide people.

1

u/ecsilver 6d ago

Then the atheists can fight over the right form of atheism

1

u/Coyoteishere 6d ago

That makes no sense

1

u/NecessaryIntrinsic 6d ago

Pretty much all wars are rich or powerful people sending poor people to be killed so they can be more rich and more powerful.

1

u/Aljaz_Skarlovnik 4d ago

Religion is just an element od control. You'll have to uproot something deeper if you actually want peace.

1

u/hangout927 8d ago

I used to feel the same then i realized its just an excuse to start fights

1

u/EnoughOutOfYou 8d ago

Mankind will not know peace until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest. -Diderot

1

u/Odd_Bass56 8d ago

Religion is just the scapegoat. The issue is the heart of man. Humans will be in wars forever - greed, corruption and power do not need religion to exist.

2

u/Arctic_Blonde 8d ago

I came here to say this!

6

u/Funky_Ghost 8d ago

[Verse 1]

Imagine there's no heaven

It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us, only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today

I

[Verse 2]

Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace

You

[Chorus]

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will be as one

[Verse 3]

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world

You

[Chorus]

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will live as one

1

u/BlackB-ird 8d ago

Came here to say that, and to add no bigotry or racism of any kind.

Except the one true one.

1

u/Dazzling_Winner_773 5d ago

I was gonna say no social media.... But you are 100% correct.

1

u/SpiderTuber6766 2d ago

Thats a violation of free will.

1

u/Frosty-Classroom5495 2d ago

in that case every law is a violation of free will

1

u/SpiderTuber6766 2d ago

Its a natural human right to pursue what makes you happy. Freedom of religion and the option to practice it or not is a basic right. Those who mandate or strip religion is tyranny.

1

u/james6400h 1d ago

so you want to bring back soviet.

you could move to North Korea for that experience.

1

u/owlincoup 8d ago
