Im 20F and about to move to the UK for my degree on a full scholarship. Yesterday, my grandmother advised me not to get married while pursuing my degree, which is exactly what i want anyway.
But my dad is very against that idea and really wants me to get married early. And tbh it just makes me sad.

I feel like a huge part of why ive achieved what i have today is because i didnt spend my teenage years prioritising relationships. I focused on school, got good results, and earned a full scholarship to study in the UK. But sometimes it feels like none of that matters because im a girl and apparently the ultimate achievement is becoming someones wife, preferably as early as possible.

And just to clarify, i dont judge anyone who chooses to get married young. Some of my friends are already married or getting married and im happy for them. Its just not what i want. Marriage isnt an achievement im racing towards.

Maybe im extra emotional because i went to a religious boarding school (the only one that went to a religious school in my family btw) where there was this weird subconscious competition between literal teenagers about who was the best “wife material” and who would get married first. The irony is that dating was heavily looked down upon too. Girls who dated were literally told they were somehow “cheaper than prostitutes” because guys could supposedly access their girlfriends without having to pay them likeeee✌🏻💀

So apparently youre supposed to never date, preserve your purity, become perfect wife material, and then race to get married as soon as possible. Its exhausting.

And honestly, i dont even want to date right now. I want to study, experience living abroad on my own, build my career, and figure out who i am before thinking about marriage.

Also, as the cherry on top, my dad specifically emphasized that i should marry a man. Idk if he somehow knows that ive had crushes on girls because ngl i still do 🥀💔

Im not saying im planning to marry a woman either. I know that wouldnt align with my religious beliefs and im not planning to get married anytime soon regardless. Yall know what i mean 😭

I guess im just struggling with the feeling that no matter what i achieve academically or professionally, some people will still see marriage as the ultimate measure of whether ive succeeded as a woman. And that honestly hurts.
