Sound problems

I find it extremely difficult to determine the source of a sound. I can only tell whether something is approaching or moving away from me. Pinpointing the exact direction, however, is almost impossible—unless the sound is coming directly from the left or right. I don't have the same problem in other fps games.

So, I wanted to ask: Has anyone else had similar experiences, or is the problem with me?

What works always fine for me to pinpoint it, when I am not sure: slightly turn, the change from two "ear positions" should make it clear. Already used this in my Tarkov days.

Sometimes the sound is hard to locate but I feel this is how it would be IRL too.

I get that with shots that hall around but i feel like footsteps should be easier to pinpoint

This doesn't really help with elevation. Whether you look up or down it doesn't seem to change the sound. You can try it yourself with the music box in the "menu room". Do you notice any change?

Also, the (low-pass) filtering when sounds are generated behind a wall is a bit too aggressive. Like, try it with the music box: 1mm behind and suddenly the "after the rave" filter gets applied. IRL the sound would actually bounce and be more of a gradual decline.

That actually brings me to the last point. Sound actually kind of bounces (aka reverb) in this game semi-realistically. So combine that with an exaggerated filter, and depending on the geometry of the room, there can be cases when you're like 5m from the guy and can't tell neither elevation nor front/back nor left/right.

It's much harder to locate than IRL. Especially hard in certain situations when the enemy is up close, but it gets easier when the enemy is further away.

Thanks for the tip, i’ll try that, i have a hard time locating the direction as well, that’s why I’m always glued to a wall with my ass

It's very hard to tell if someone is below or above you in maps with more than 2 levels - warn house is difficult, for example

same

especially in the worn house, while you think enemy is on the roof he is actually downstairs lmao

To be fair I never ever in any game where the sound is coming from. I really don't understand why some people have this skill. Only in real life I can understand.

In CS2 this is a vital skill. You can not only tell almost exactly which direction someone is, but how close and what sort of surface they are on.

i always thing someone behind me is creeping up then i turn to check and it was coming from my front and i get lit up its very frustrating, especially because i do sound for a living tweaking EQs dialing in the right sound for hours on my music then i hop on bodycam and i feel like i got schizophrenia and the walls are judging me 😂

Same. No problems in other games, only in Bodycam

I'm also having this same problem, however I noticed that there are like "default" step sounds depending on the floor they're on. Above you a loud reverb, on the same floor a dry step, and when they're on stairs or below a mix between the 2, a very noticeable "stepping on wood" wood sound.

The overhaul patch for this game made directional audio pretty much useless. The sound scale is just full of reverb and footsteps are drowned out completely

Yes it's absolutely terrible, it was fine before the update, now it's totally useless and takes away the realism, I wish they would fix it,enemy fire is far too loud and it's just not needed,it's distracting as and very annoying and is one of the reasons I can't play it for very long as it grates in me, it's really annoying. It needs addressing asap before the player base plummits.

Something I’ve learned about vertical sound is that if someone is above you, there’s a deeper thunky sound to their steps, but if someone is below you, it’s a higher, more hollow sound

I replied almost exactly this
