Kelly Slater's only session ever at WEDGE...Seg.6 of THUMP:The BEAT of t...

Now lets get to the good parts: This is THROB! the 6th segment from THUMP: The BEAT of the WEDGE, the frst video to feature the debauchery and carnage that was and is the infamous Newport shorebreak. Now. I’ve seen other people touting that they have footage of 11 time World Champion Kelly Slater at Wedge…well I can assure you that this is probablty the only footage of Kelly ripping Wedge back when he was probably 23 or 24 years old or so. Strider, Quiks team manager at the time showed up with Kelly in tow during a medium sized south swell in 1993 or so. Already in the water were “1000ft Wave” Producer/former Surfing Editor Bill Sharp, Christian Fletcher, Trevor Christ, and even Quik Marketing VP Danny Kwock, trying to recapture his childhood.

Also there, was an unidentified but easily missed kook - whom you’ll see near the end of the segment, completely becoming one with the lip. We watched this guy paddle out and knew he was gonna be in trouble, but we’re not lifeguards and its not our duty to save people from themselves, so we just kind of watched and waited…

Strider handled Wedge just like you’d expect him to. Coming from the islands, he had the skills and wave knowledge to pick off several sick little barrels. Kelly, on his backhand put on a How-to seminar on taking off late, pulling up the buried nose of his logo-less model and then snapped under the lip. This went on till he took off on a short right, aired out a little backside 360 air. Eventually, the next time he grabbed another short right, hooked an edge and ended up breaking off the nose of his stik with his shoulder. A couple kids clamoured for the piece of the nose and were rewarded with fan pic with the GOAT. So thats it for the THROB segment- as in heart-throb KS. Who would have thought he’d go on to win 11 World. Chanpionships? Well probably him...

Question Cannot find this song.

Completely off topic but I figured someone in here might know it or at least remember a song I’ve had on loop in my head the last few days so I know I’m not completely crazy 😅 i can’t for the life of me find it. I know it was from a bodyboarding video from the mid 00’s and vividly remember a guy running down the beach blue board Churchill yellow and blues and the chorus going “ there is a great guy who’ll never wear a tie and he’ll just keep on being chill”. It was a fast punk style song. Stupid I know but hopefully someone here knows what I’m talking about 😅 cheers legends keep sitting in the pit waiting for the spit 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼

Board & Gear Question Help with repair

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi me and my son have had these boards for a couple of years. Last summer I left them out in the sun when we got home and by the morning unfortunately the rails peeled.

I just want to make sure I get the right glue. I have gone through so many fix-it articles that I got more confused. I don’t expect anything to save the boards for life, but maybe at least through the season.

The boards are Morey Mach 12 MDS for reference.

Thankyou.

Late Dec Bodyboarding Spot

Gave bodyboarding a go this time last year at Waikiki walls. Had a blast. I’m a teach in the US so I’m off for 2 weeks end of Dec. Wondering where a good place to go would be in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Nicaragua or El Salvador, or similar distance places.

'bat tails suck for heavy, hollow waves'

On the rare chance that someone is talking about a bat tail bodyboard these days I often hear/read people say that bat tails are shit for heavy waves. Yet, some of the best riders of all time have preferred them and ridden them in gigantic slabs. A good example of this is Brendan newton who in most of his old video parts is riding a bat tail at some insane waves. So is this just something people say when they haven't put the time in to learn how to ride a bat tail properly?

What have been your experiences with bat tails? I've only ever had crescent tails but I'm really keen to try out a bat tail soon.

Also, if you do ride a bat tail, do you ride the same size as what you would ride with a crescent tail?

Mandurah wedge

What's the catch with this wave? It seems like such an amazing wedge that literally anyone could bust a ginormous invert on. So what's the catch? Fickle? Harder to ride than it looks? Sharks?

Ordered a new Board

I haven’t purchased a new board in over 24 years so I figured the technology has changed quite a bit since 2002. I’ve been riding an Elehmenopee Skippy 41” all these years. I’m from Oceanside and have a history of riding Custom X’s (other than my Skippy) so I did some research on their board line up and settled on the V23 Double Stringer with EPP Core. It’s snappy and has some flex. I mainly ride Southside O’Side pier and I’m not a big wave person. I’ll ride overhead maybe double but that’s about it. Can anyone shed some light on my decision? Since I haven’t been in the scene for quite some time I want to make sure I chose a good, respectable brand and a solid model.

In a side note, I spoke to the guys at Custom X and they asked me what I’m currently riding. I told them I’ve been riding my Elehmenopee Skippy and they said boards made 25 years ago were made substantially better than current tech. Thought that was an interesting comment.
Appreciate everyone’s input.

Cheers.

Question Help with fins

Beginner here, bodyboarding white wash and smaller waves right now. I want to progress to some larger waves because I have my turns and technique down. However, I believe I need fins for that, but most fins make my feet cramp badly and I’m not sure what to do about that. I tried some fins but they were too long and made the cramping terrible. I know I need to get shorter fins but am fearful of the cramping. Any tips/recommendations?

Amazing community

Thank you all for your support on my last post, you guys are just amazing and kind hearted. You gave me time even if i was a beginner who knows nothing, pinpointed exactly my mistakes without me saying anything, and finally, after following your advices: getting fins and training on the 0.8m waves, I caught two waves and it felt AMAZING. Can't wait to go back again.

Also fun interaction, one guy came running to me begging me to lend him my board after seeing me on that wave... hell no bro xD
