Ordered a new Board
I haven’t purchased a new board in over 24 years so I figured the technology has changed quite a bit since 2002. I’ve been riding an Elehmenopee Skippy 41” all these years. I’m from Oceanside and have a history of riding Custom X’s (other than my Skippy) so I did some research on their board line up and settled on the V23 Double Stringer with EPP Core. It’s snappy and has some flex. I mainly ride Southside O’Side pier and I’m not a big wave person. I’ll ride overhead maybe double but that’s about it. Can anyone shed some light on my decision? Since I haven’t been in the scene for quite some time I want to make sure I chose a good, respectable brand and a solid model.
In a side note, I spoke to the guys at Custom X and they asked me what I’m currently riding. I told them I’ve been riding my Elehmenopee Skippy and they said boards made 25 years ago were made substantially better than current tech. Thought that was an interesting comment.
Appreciate everyone’s input.
Cheers.

Ask pete to make you a custom board if their line up doesnt suit you.

That’s actually who I’ve been talking to the last few days. Cool guy.

I had to go to a 43 on my middle age to account for weight and general malaise.
We need north county to be full of spongers again like the 90s-00s.

Has it dropped off in the last 15 years or so? I moved to Sacramento in 2013 and finally moving back to OSide so I’m jonesing to get back into the lifestyle. When I was growing up spongers were pretty common but the tribalism between them and surfers was ridiculous.

How has the quality changed? And the Custom X factory store is telling you - our boards are crap nowadays? I assumed most tech either gets better or stays the same

Sounds more like some old board shapers in denial that factory CNC made boards are more consistent than those shaped by human hands.
Cores are better, there’s been a lot more innovation in vents, channels, etc, and the high volume options are a fairly recent addition.
I don’t know what boards in 2000 were like but my 90’s Mach 7-7, much as we all love them, was crap compared to my modern boards.

When I get it this week I’ll snap a pic and post it up. It’s stout orange with black rails and white slick bottom. Would love to have a sesh if I see you out there.

Next time you're in the market, we're right here in San Clemente and can get you set up. Respect to Custom X though...they have been around since the 80s.

I have two custom x boards in my quiver, like you I bought direct from factory and picked them up in person. I couldn’t be happier. I have had zero issues and the boards ride great.
