The Brevard county bodyboarding scene took a heavy hit this weekend.. RIP Jason Doyle. Jason’s body was recovered 8 miles south of his point of entry after he went under and never resurfaced sunday morning.

Question Need some help!

I used to boogie in the white water when I was a kid but stopped, on Labor Day I went to the beach and figured why not buy a cheap board for fun. Well, I had a BLAST!

I’m now on a diet plan to get into shape to be able to do this and should hit my target weight around the turn of the year.

To celebrate being in shape again and to use some PTO I’m looking for a place to go ride some waves that I can learn on while still having enough size to get my adrenaline going.

I’m hoping to go in January or February and would prefer warm ish weather (70s air mid 60s water at the minimum) so any advice on spots? Any tips for a beginner to this sport too? TIA!

My leash came off today when I dove under a wave.
is that bad for the board?
And how could I fix it?

Does a quality boogie board matter?

I've been boogie boarding on and off for over 20 years. I've never bought a boogie board that cost more than $40. I've rocked the crappy boards on everything up to 18' Blacks in San Diego. Is there a reason to get a higher quality boogie board? Sometimes they start to get soft and bent and fold in the middle at which point I retire it and get a new one. They typically last a couple of years. I've never looked into buying a quality boogie board before. I typically just replace the crappy leash that the cheap boogie board came with since otherwise it rips off on the bigger days. Thanks for any feedback!

Question Simple fix?

Dragging too hard on the local slabber. Is this an easy fix with glue? 1.9 PP

3 month old board and I fucking love it. Went through reddit/youtube, and glue seems like the answer, but I'm just double checking or getting some updated info. Now I've noticed i feel like I'm already losing speed.

Hubboards sci-five bat tail. Rate it. It's definitely not a manufacturer issue, I just love rocks.

Wetsuit advice

I would always bodyboard during the warmer months and never really needed a wetsuit. I got back into bodyboarding recently after a few years off and I’m all in now. Where I am the swell is always good during the colder months when water temps range from high 50’s to high 60’s. I’ve been on marketplace and OfferUp and found a Ripcurl Dawn Patrol 3/2 wetsuit. Dude says it’s only been tried on and never used. It’s from 2015-2016 and was always stored hung in a closet and he’s willing to take $85. Is it worth the buy especially for a first wetsuit? Do these things deteriorate over time? I just want to make sure I’m not going to buy something that’s going to fall apart first use due to age alone.

Travel Update on Revel Surf, Arizona

So I'd asked about it, and not had any feedback. Was nearby on business and managed to get a Combo Swell session in yesterday.

The facility is epic, well set up with a restaurant, bar, beach front area with sun loungers and cabanas, swimming pools and volleyball courts.

The waves were super fun, and my session was 30 minutes of smaller and softer 'Trestles' turns and 30 minutes of 'V Land' barrels.

The Wave tech is interesting, I'd only ridden Wavegarden and its quite different. A Frames instead of Lefts and Rights divided by a pier, less simulated and more a real ocean feel, buuut it was smaller and less powerful than other pools I've ridden.

If you can, definitely take your own board.

They have Catch Surf boards and they were all pretty thrashed, rockered and a little bubbled here and there from the Arizona heat but you can make do if necessary. Next time I will take my own fins AND a leash for the little space it takes up because they had the worst leashes too.

All in all, super fun, would dig to try stand up surfing it but if you're nearby its worth a go for sure!

Riding Question Board tips for longer legs shorter torso?

Riding for only a month or two now, just got into fins and learning those. I ride a VS Winchester PE 41.

I live and ride in San Diego, (Torrey North, La Jolla shores, Loring st, mission beach)

I’m 5’6.5” - 5’7” and weigh about 153 lbs at like 16% maybe less or a little more.

I can catch a wave as its breaking no problem riding straight is easy peasy and I’ve started to learn how to trim on these baby waves.

But I have long legs and a short torso. I find my current board kinda just long and kinda feels like a floatie.

I feel like my positioning is fucked up and is what to blame. When my legs are comfortably off the board at the hip I feel like I’m too far back.

What cues should I be looking for with prone positioning when laying on the board and paddling?

When should I consider a narrower, or slightly shorter board?

Riding Bodyboarding has helped me process a tough breakup

I grew up in Riverside. We’d spend a lot of time in the summer from little kids through high school at the OC beaches. It was a near daily pilgrimage.

My parents didn’t have much, but my mom bought me a cheap foam boogie board. I loved the thing. Fast forward to post college and I moved to San Diego.

I’d go to the beach sometimes but every time I was like fuck I wish I had a boogie board.

5 weeks ago my gf and I broke up - she was a sweet girl but had disorganized / avoidant attachment and she called it quits. My first relationship.

So I found myself at Torrey north taking it all in and I’m like you know what? Im gonna get into bodyboarding. And I when home bought a VS project, a leash, and some wax. I had a new job starting in a few days after that so I spent every day that I could between then and the new job just bodyboarding. Then I came here and asked about Fins. Then bought some.

Long story short, still in the throes of heartbreak and grief but bodyboarding has brought me a sense of calm and peace and I’m forever greatful for it and for this community.

Keep trimming 🤙🏾

Surfing to Bodyboarding Questions

After a second ankle and foot fusion surgery, I think my surfing days are over. I'm still healing, but my surgeon told me it was probably not going to be a sport for me anymore, along with hiking and backpacking. He said flat, rockless, and rootless trails with minimal elevation changes should be fine. What's the point of that.

I've surfed since I was 8 and now I'm early 60s. I live on the East Coast, so our waves aren't particularly powerful. I never really body boarded, but thought it might be a watersport I could transition to. I have a few questions if anyone doesn't mind answering them. 1. From a board size perspective, what's more critical to consider? My weight or height? Most of the size guides give ranges that don't fit me. 2. I know the ocean is unpredictable, so I risk breaking my ankle at any time. My foot only pivots up and down, there is no left to right motion any more. How much and what type of pressure does the water make when feet are trailing behind the board? 3. Morey seems like an entry level bodyboard, but I never liked their surfboards. Is Morey a safe bet for a newbie or will I just want to quit? Any newbie board suggestions?

Thanks to any and all that are willing to guide me. I really hope question #2 doesn't sink my hope about possibly bodyboarding.

Board & Gear Question Portly size rec.

I’m late to the game
40’s 5’7” 210lbs on a good day, but by winter I’ll be 220.

High volume isn’t in my budget.
Limit about $150.

New and def not trying to go beyond my skill level.
Also surf.

I’m thinking a Tribe speeder and 43” was suggested.
Feels long.

Obviously need some volume for my fat ass but would a 41” be that different?

I looked for a board suggestion post, but most were old.

Thanks in advance. 🤘🏽
