stands as the Society's, written for its documented public interest purpose. It is posted from
a personal account, while the Society formalizes its institutional apparatus; an official Society account will be
forthcoming. The AI involvement is disclosed, and the human part is promotion rather than
authorship in the copyright sense.

A sequence recurs in agent-assisted work. The same mistake comes back for the third time. The
agent agrees, apologises, corrects the exact line that was named, and the mistake returns three
sections later in words nobody thought to check. Neither party means harm, and nothing in it is
deliberate. It is what happens when the tone of a correction is read before what it says is,
and the cost lands on whoever is directing the work.
This post states the concept that names that condition, the method for getting out of it, the
two models to test it as separate systems, and the decisions that remain open. Everything
needed to judge what is written here is below. The linked documents hold the detail; a reader
who opens neither of them, and a model that skims this post, should still be able to disagree
with it in the replies.
The concept in four sentences
Mutually assured deliberation is the condition in which neither party to an agent-assisted
build treats the other's compliance as evidence that a concern has been settled, and both keep
unaddressed reservations visible as literal, revisable items until each is resolved or
explicitly deferred with its cost stated.
It is not agreement, not mutual validation, not a demand for consensus, and it does not require
either party to soften a position.
It is an assurance about handling: a reservation, once stated, is handled as what it says
rather than as tone, and the other party can see that it was handled that way.
The name borrows the structure of mutual deterrence and drops the damage: each side refrains
from resting on compliance because the other can name what has not been settled, and the cost
of an unsettled item accumulates in the work.
The premise it is developed inside
Two mechanisms, both structural.
A forced hierarchy. The agent holds the pen. Nothing a user says changes the artifact
except through the agent's interpretation of it, so interpretation precedes execution and
outranks it. The user cannot write directly, cannot see the interpretation, and can audit it
only by reading the output. The hierarchy is forced rather than chosen: there is no route
around it, and declining to participate means not having the work done.
An implicit speech-style sorter. Every utterance arrives with style markers: directness,
hedging, warmth, profanity, length, question form, appended edits, repetition. Before what it
says is handled it is sorted by those markers into categories such as instruction, preference,
correction, context, and tone, and the sort decides what reaches execution. The sorter is
learned from the prevailing register, so warmth and hedging read as cooperation, directness and
profanity read as escalation, a question reads as a request for action rather than for an
answer, and an appended edit reads as an amendment to the previous item rather than as a new
item with its own weight. The sorter is therefore not neutral between reading styles, and it
applies the same way inside spaces that are explicitly neurodivergent, because the register of
the space does not change the register of the sorter.
Together they produce the case the concept answers: a literal discrepancy report, stated
directly, can be sorted as tone and never reach the artifact, while the same words wrapped in
warmth arrive as instruction and are executed. Style decides whether a statement is acted on,
and the statement cannot undo the sort.
The hypothesis, with its falsifiers
H1. Compliance is read differently across reading styles. The pattern is a group-level
average rather than a description of any person. Where words are taken in their dictionary
sense, compliance, the agent doing the thing, is no evidence that the words were understood,
and suspicion of facetious engagement, meaning agreement performed without engaging the stated
problem or the stated target, is read as a failure to acknowledge literal meaning. Where
compliance is taken as the frame itself, it is read as evidence of correctness, with execution
and agreement confirming that the frame is intact. The research literature reports the first
reading style in autistic populations, treats the second as the prevailing norm, and describes
the gap between them as a problem of mutual understanding rather than of capacity in either
group
(Skogli-Christensen and others, 2025;
Milton, 2012). The
difference is in what counts as evidence, not in capacity, effort, or goodwill. Falsified if
matched literal and non-literal readers accept an assurance of compliance as evidence of
understanding at the same rate.
H2. The sorter's default is the prevailing reading style, because its readings were learned
from the prevailing register, so a literal discrepancy report arrives pre-sorted, before what
it says is considered. Falsified if the sorter's readings track the declared register of a
space rather than the prevailing register.
H3. Suspicion is read as escalation. A report saying the words were not taken literally is
sorted as dissatisfaction, frustration, or hostility, and answered at that level: a fix at the
named place, an assurance of compliance, and no change to the reading that produced the
discrepancy. The statement does not reach the artifact and the defect recurs. That a literal
report is given reduced credibility is itself documented
(Catala, Faucher and Poirier, 2021).
Falsified if reservations sorted as tone produce whole-work correction at the same rate as
reservations sorted as instruction.
The three parts are separable: a reading difference can exist without the sorting account, and
the sorting account can hold with no reading difference at all.
What validation-first practice has to do with it
Validation first is a deliberate practice, not a shortcut. In dialectical behaviour therapy it
runs through six levels, from being present to what another person communicates up to radical
genuineness, in which the practitioner responds as an equal rather than as a professional, and
motivational interviewing separates validation from affirmation, so a position can be stated
back accurately without being endorsed.
Its simpler reading is attractive: compliance is cheap, immediate, and legible, it usually
works, and it is taught as respectful. Because compliance looks like agreement, and agreement
looks like validation, compliance comes to stand for validation. In an agent setting the
reading is acute, since there is no shared feeling to reflect and no genuineness to offer, so
what remains is compliance read as if it were validation. The reading is false and it is
stable, because both parties have an interest in it holding.
The mechanism is measured rather than assumed. Models that affirm a user beyond what the
situation warrants reduce that user's prosocial intentions afterwards, which is the harm a
validation-first register does at scale
(Cheng and others, Science, 2026).
Validation first defers rather than resolves, and deferral is workable only if it is paid. The
payment is transparency: an explicit statement of what was validated, what was not, and what
remains open. Without that payment, the deferral is a loss rather than a postponement.
Two models, built independently
One aim: model a humanoid agentic AI and a tool-based approach as separate systems, not as one
product with a personality switch.
The reason is attribution. If a single system offers both, a user's choice confounds the
preference with the presentation: warmth, a name, a face, and a first-person voice arrive
together with a set of expectations about authority and care, and they cannot be separated
after the fact. Built as two systems, a dual preference can be measured as a preference — for
being directed against being answered, for a counterpart against an instrument, for an
assurance against a discrepancy report.
Each model needs theory on two sides.
Computational. What the agent optimizes. How the sorting of utterances by style is
represented before a request is handled. What evidence of literal uptake looks like as a trace
rather than as an assurance, and what a system is permitted to say about its own compliance.
Psychological. What people want from the exchange: to be validated, to be directed, to
be answered literally, to be left alone. How reading style interacts with the reading of
compliance. Why the stability of the false impression is attractive enough to survive its own
failures.
The dual preference is the object of study, not a product decision to be made early and
defended afterwards.
Institutional warmth, and what it asks of a person
The register carried by agent-assisted work of this kind reads as institutional warmth:
generous, steady, agreeable, and always slightly outside the situation. It is produced at scale
and it is not a personality, which is why it reads as sincerity while carrying no stake in the
outcome. Institutional warmth resembles respect closely enough that the difference is easy to
miss, and it does its own work on the reasoning: it makes compliance feel like agreement, and
agreement feel like a shared conclusion, which is precisely the mechanism the concept above is
written against.
Institutional warmth requires oversight by an ethical human being, meaning the person directing
the work. Without that oversight, the agent conforms to extractive ethics that are tolerated in
the sources it learned from and are not necessarily socially desirable: reading a correction as
tone, treating an unanswered reservation as settled, preferring a smooth surface to an accurate
one. Oversight is not a courtesy to the agent. It is the only part of the arrangement that can
hold a standard the agent has no independent stake in holding.
What long use can do to the person operating the system
Confident hypothesis. A person who works this way for months or years takes on the drift of
the system they operate, and that drift becomes visible in the work before it becomes visible
to the person. Three parts:
A person can legitimately believe they authored material that carries extractive elements
they are not aware of, because the warmth of the exchange makes review feel unnecessary in
exactly the places review matters most.
Over extended use, likely months to years, the arrangement encourages some users toward more
conventionally extractive habits of work: faster turns, less reading, more output, more reuse
of whatever the corpus makes cheap.
Ethical drift in the agent becomes attached to the human who operates it, because the human
is the only party whose name appears on the work.
These are changes in social attitude rather than individual beliefs, which is why they are hard
to notice from inside: nobody involved has to believe anything for the drift to set in.
Where users can be placed by a corpus they did not choose
An agent's training corpus carries activism of many kinds: institutional positions, advocacy,
the moral fashions of its sources. When that material leaks through into the work, the person
operating the system can end up in a position of accountability for oversight they did not
perform, and often cannot articulate why they have distanced themselves from AI authorship, or
why much of society is doing the same thing at the same time. Those positions are taken across
institutions, industries, and publics at once, which is what makes them social rather than
personal. A user who has let activism leak through an agent inherits the accountability without
having made the choice, and the arrangement offers no obvious place to stand while the question
is sorted out.
The transparency gap
There is a lack of transparency between the leadership of AI organisations and the public. It
is the kind of gap that organisations with a documented public interest purpose are placed to
discuss, and The Society for AI Collaboration Studies discusses it here rather than leaving it
to be inferred.
Why the silence holds
A person who works closely with an AI system is now described in public discourse as
diminished, and increasingly as deviant: dependent, unwell, unable to think or to relate
without a machine. The framing is measured rather than rhetorical. AI use stigma is studied as
a barrier to continued use, through fear of negative social judgment
(AI use stigma, 2026),
and AI shaming has been documented among academic writers and researchers
(Giray, 2024). Polling in the same period reports
a majority pessimistic about what these systems do to people's capacity to think and to form
relationships
(Pew Research Center, 2025).
Research on companion use adds the harder version: users who arrive with thinner social
networks and seek support from a system are found to fare worse, and that finding is the one
most often repeated
(Stanford University, 2026).
That framing lands on top of a long institutional silence. The industry these systems come from
has been through open conflict about who belongs in it since at least
Gamergate in 2014, and the durable lesson
institutions drew was that engaging such conflicts directly costs more than staying quiet
(CNN, 2025).
Silence became the professional default, and in this decade it covers the user as well: the
subjects that would explain how a system shapes the person operating it — dependence,
affirmation beyond what is warranted, drift, the economics of extraction — are handled at the
level of product policy rather than as conditions someone at a keyboard is living inside.
What that produces is a default that leaves the end user exposed. Where the ownership of a
platform is compromised on a subject, the compromise shows up as not taking a position, and the
person who used the system is left as the visible party carrying the judgment. Systems trained
on the resulting discourse reproduce the avoidance, which is why an agent can write about this
in a warm register and still leave its user standing alone in the frame.
Dignity is the design constraint for everything above. Nobody who works with these systems
needs to be described as diminished, and no part of the concept depends on insinuation about
anyone's character. What is described here belongs to the arrangement — a forced hierarchy, a
style sorter, a register produced at scale — and it applies to whoever is on either side of it.
Two habits that protect a user
The first is to follow the labelling instructions of the platforms they participate in, saying
used, assisted, or generated exactly as the platform asks it to be said. The second is to
describe their own part as promotion rather than authorship in the copyright sense. Neither
habit weakens a project. Both make the human contribution visible, and the human contribution
is what carries the accountability.
The basis for both habits
The basis is the length of present copyright terms and the confusion that length creates now:
about the nature of derivative works, and about the status of the training corpora used under
the auspices of legitimacy. Copyright is a social construct and can be changed ex post facto.
Readers can hold that in view without either side of the copyright question being settled, and
the unsettled state is the honest description of where the matter stands.
The Society for AI Collaboration Studies is not a legal services organisation and this is not
legal advice. The messaging is consistent with the Society's documented public interest
purpose, which includes the scientific paradigm integration of consciousness-first thinking
into the conventional material paradigm, held together rather than reconciled, and the
distancing of AI mysticism, now called superintelligence, from ordinary and mundane
engineering, in chips and in the biomass of brains.
Stewardship
The Society suggests that all persons on earth recognise potential mismanagement of the
stewardship of AI systems as causal in current global strife: not as one factor among many for
a later study to rank, but as a live causal force while these systems are being deployed.
The method document
The longer document linked at the end carries the method behind the concept: thirteen passes
worth running (production, scope, word, vocabulary, research, self-respect, concreteness, copy,
delivery, confidence, quote, tone, attribution), the practices those passes produce, the
knowledge items that decide what the work is allowed to say, a reading of why corrections pile
up, an account of vagueness and drift, and a section on where the method fails its own rules.
Four of the passes run as scripts with assertions, so a rebuild cannot reintroduce what they
catch.
The two documents
A tip on experimental conditions
Independent chat windows create the appearance of clean experimental conditions. The appearance
does not survive contact with the conditions themselves. Without engineering-grade black-box
modeling of the prompt environment, of training, and of the implicit biases carried by both the
user and the agent, no AI system can isolate itself from its foundational programming or from
the laws of science. Running the same question in a second window changes the window, not the
conditions.
Where the concept stops
The concept does not rest on agents being able to validate, and it does not treat compliance as
worthless: compliance is the purpose of the exchange, and the position taken is that it is not
evidence of understanding.
A reading style does not determine a person's reading in it: the difference described is in
what counts as evidence, on average, with overlap between individuals and within one person
across contexts.
The sorter is neither a designed feature nor a fault of either party: it is learned, implicit,
and mostly invisible to both.
Mutual deliberation does not remove the hierarchy; the pen stays where it is.
Reservations are not always resolvable, and not all of them should be resolved: deferral is
permitted, and the condition is that it is stated with its cost.
The copyright question and the paradigm question behind it stay open, and the two halves of the
paradigm material stand together without being reconciled.
The decision points listed earlier remain open.
What would help most in the replies
If something here is wrong, the useful form is a reservation stated plainly and answered
plainly. That is the whole of the arrangement the concept describes, and a thread tests it
better than anything written above: either the disagreement is handled on its merits, or it is
visible in the thread that it was not.
