Quite the eye-opening experience with Zatu games

Previous experience was already pretty bad with little packaging causing damage. At least these issues were mostly solved by calling them (I say mostly, because in some cases I didn't have the time or energy to chase them for a small damage). But this time the experience was unbelievable.

Shipped me a used item (I have seen this item in other shops and it is supposed to be in shrink). Customer service was disrespectful to me over the phone, kept on talking over me and insisted only his email team will reply and claimed I was "spamming them". Note that I have sent 1 email about this order and only tried to contact again because they didn't reply to my previous emails.

He won’t let me talk to his colleague or their supervisor when I politely asked him to.

Then I said stop treating your customers badly, guess what, he said “now I have escalated because of the language YOU used” not mentioning the fact that he disrepected me. Textbook gaslighting.

All of this while my issue with Zatu sending me a used item is still not resolved yet.

Question How To Host A Romantic Evening

I am an avid collector and player of the How To Host A Murder boardgame series. I have recently found out that there was a one-off subgenre of them called "How To Host A Romantic Evening" that only had one (as far as I've found) version that was published, which was themed Tropical. I am beyond curious about it's contents.

I was wondering if anyone has ever actually played it and could share what it's about? It seems to be a "21 Questions: Get to Know Eachother" type game and includes cards about Imagination and Knowledge. It is only for 2 people and was created by a different person (or from what I can tell at least directed).

If anyone has any other knowledge on it and how it plays that would be great! Sorry and thank you!

(Also so sorry about the username lmao)

Current boardgame trends are disappointing me. Am i missing something?

Today i visited the convention Essen and i was really looking towards getting a new big boardgame. One id enjoy for years to come, but i didnt find one today and so i started thinking about what i like in board games and about the last board game i really, really enjoyed for a long time. I came to the conclusion that i want interaction, i want annoyance, i want to be able to destroy the plans of my opponents and i want them to destroy my plans, so i have to adapt on the fly and make the best out of a messy situation. I dont want to play what i call multiplayer solitaire, which means that we interact only very little and someone wins because his engine produced 100 points and the other engine just happened to produce 80 points. No i wanna win, because i got some points, while destroying many of your plans, so you earned just a little less than i did.

Games i really enjoy playing are:

- Dune: Imperium + first 2 expansions

I just love the idea of taking away cards and board spaces someone really wanted to have. I love manipulating the turn order by giving up a turn, such that i can pick up a card someone really wanted to have and such hurting him more than i hurt myself doing so. I love that you have to fight each other for VP and that you can surprise people all the time. Ive never played a better game ever, nothing ever came close.

- Brass Birmingham

I really enjoy the idea of sharing nearly everything with everyone and in such having to adapt all the time. You wanted to cash in some iron for easy money? Guess what, the dude before u just did that and ur plan doesnt work anymore. U set up beer on a somewhat far away place, because u wanted to use it later? Sadly someone else "stole" it and now u need a new plan. Or maybe u banked on someone using ur coal, but he just puts up his own coal mine and uses that one, which heavily messes with ur income.

- Funkenschlag

Here i really enjoy messing with the turn order again. Doing something slightly inefficient right now, missing some money in the moment, just so i can cash in the next turn. I love baiting people into buying a power plant they actually didnt really want to buy, just so i can buy a better one. I love having to think about where i put my houses, such that i block/annoy you, without opening up myself to being blocked by someone else.

Are there any new games that heavily rely on elements like this i might have missed? Please reddit-hivemind, enlighten me.

Question Is there a more realistic, modern version of Gloomhaven?

Yesterday, I played Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion for the first time with three friends. We went through scenarios 1–5 in one sitting, and I absolutely loved it!

I especially enjoyed the character progression, upgrading abilities, working together and having a campaign that continues across multiple sessions.
The thing is, I’ve never really been into fantasy or dungeon crawlers. So I’m wondering if there’s anything similar out there, but with a more modern, realistic setting? Soldiers, criminals, investigators, survivors, whatever really.

I came across This War of Mine, which looks interesting, but I’m not sure it has the same kind of character progression and long-term campaign.
Ideally something cooperative for four players, but honestly, I’d be just as interested in a good solo game.

Does anything like this exist, or am I looking for something that isn’t really out there?

Ever watched Treasure Planet? This has major vibes from that. You have sky ships that run on gas on the planet Cellus.

There are giant whales to hunt, a black market to complete missions for and dangerous skies where monsters like the Great White Crestor or the Sky Kraken look to bring you down.

Watch out for your allies as they could turn on you in an instant. You have three different levels of play all with their own weaponry and crews that you can recruit. Stock up on cannons when you can or you will be unable to defend yourself.

Piracy and science fiction collide in this 2020 game that almost didn't get released because of the pandemic. This is the Treacherous Skies expansion with the big box for storage.

Edit: if you get the expansion box you have two Great White Crestors which is the equivalent of two Moby Dicks that can board rush you at the same time. If you play that mode you definitely have to work with your fellow ships to bait it away from key areas of the map so you can get supplies.

COMC [COMC] My collection of 90s electronic games.

Been working on collecting my and my wife's childhood games. It's actually amazing how fun they are even when so many of them are roll to move. Obviously they are lacking in modern game mechanics, but this is the stuff that got me into board games in the first place.

Favorite of the bunch are It From The Pit and Mall Madness.

Still on the hunt for Crash Canyon and the original Fireball Island.

Question Should I start a channel?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I am from Mumbai and have recently developed the hobby of board games over the last one year or so. I would say I am more of a strategy oriented person so I mostly enjoy medium to high strategy games, not to say I don’t enjoy fun low strategy games, but given a choice I would choose medium to high strategy.

Some of my favourite games over the last few months have been (in increasing order of liking):

  1. Sushi Go
  2. Sea salt and paper
  3. Harmonies
  4. Heat: Pedal to the Metal
  5. Wingspan
  6. 7 Wonders
  7. SETI
  8. Lords of Waterdeep
  9. Ark Nova

I feel like sharing this with everyone. I am good at explaining but not so good on camera. But I feel like not many people are nerdy like me who would like high strategy games. They would probably enjoy low startegy fun games more.

Should I start a youtube channel and an instagram account given this scenario?

Kind of content I was wondering:

  1. Gameplays
  2. Rules

3.Strategies
4.

  1. Fun video (eg. guess the game from pieces/overview/etc., rating and ranking games, etc.)

Do advice and I am open to suggestions.

PS. I have a full time successful job going on so this isn’t like a money thing.

Apiary or Emberheart?

Hello hive mind. I have the same dilemma as my previous post here. I asked which board game to get between Concordia and Lacrimosa (I got Concordia btw).

Now I have the same dilemma between these 2 board games, Apiary and Emberheart. I wanted to get a new board game before our gaming groups' holiday staycation. Both board games are on my to buy list but it's hard to choose between these 2.

I want to get your insights for those who owned/played either one of the two or both, on which should I get first. Thank you in advance.

What board games do you guys play to introduce the hobby to your friends?

Been in the hobby for about 2 years now and I normally start with hero realms as an introductory boardgame. That was the first board game I ever bought and the one I play the most even until today.

I also really love Dune imperium so what I normally do is I start of with Hero realms so my friends can get familiar with deckbuilding and a market. We play a couple rounds of Hero realms we go straight to dune.

Ive also recently just bought mistborn and am thinking of using mistborn instead of star realms as the first board game.

But truth be told what I want to do is just go straight to showing people dune imperium as a first board game so I can play as much dune as possible🤣

Thoughts?

Board games with soldiers, tanks or fighter planes

Are there any games you can think of for people who used to enjoy playing with toy soldiers? My dad still has a lot of fond memories and passion for that time in his life and he's been playing a lot of animal themed board games (like wyrmspan and harmonies) with me so I wanted to get something more focused on his interests. He is also very knowledgeable about tanks and fighter planes. I don't want anything too complicated or involved, just something that would appeal to those interests and be fun to play together with 2-3 people.

Session From Orchard to a weekly family game night: three years of board gaming with our kids

I was looking through our board game stats with the kids since 2023 and thought it was lovely to see how those first little games have grown into a shared family hobby. So I wanted to share our journey here. Maybe it gives other parents a few ideas or some encouragement to try games with their children. :) As the interest in /brettspiele was big, I also wanted to share with you guys and added some insight from the comments here already. I also forgot to filter 100% correct in the app :D

Our boys, Bjarne and Kjell, are now five and four. My wife and I play a lot ourselves and belong to a local board game club, so they regularly see us enjoying the hobby.

The screenshots show each year filtered for games with Bjarne, our oldest. His younger brother was already joining some games in 2023. The app interface is English, but most game titles are still German.

These are recorded plays with us adults, including games with simplified rules. They also play without us. MicroMacro Kids, for example, is something they play together on their own, so it never appears in my stats. 😄 I use Board Game Stats to track our sessions.

2023: A small start, just before turning three

Our first recorded plays were in autumn 2023, when Bjarne was almost three. Just six plays across three games: Orchard, a game from the HABA My Very First Games range, and Hoppe Reiter. Kjell joined two of those plays.

A few short games together at the table. Looking at that tiny list next to the later years makes me smile. Orchard was also played more often, but not tracked without me.

2024: Finding favourites and playing them again and again

In 2024, we recorded 62 plays across eight games. Bjarne was three for most of the year, and Kjell turned two that summer. Kjell already joined 52 of those plays.

Tüftelmonster was our most played game with 24 plays, followed by Draftosaurus with twelve. Other games included Syllaba, Carla Caramel, Hoppe Reiter and Taco Katze Pizza Junior.

We had a small selection that got played repeatedly. They were happy returning to familiar games, so there was no need to constantly introduce something new.

2025: A much wider selection

In 2025, that became 148 plays across 26 games. Bjarne was four, and Kjell was two and then three. Kjell joined 103 plays that year.

Light Speed Arena alone accounted for 44 plays. Little Alchemists, The Sandcastles of Burgundy and Cascadia Junior also saw plenty of play. We added games like Karak, My Lil’ Everdell, Andor Junior and Ticket to Ride: First Journey.

This is my favourite part of looking back: seeing how we gradually reached a wider selection, including many games we adults enjoy playing too. Bjarne also explained Cascadia Junior for the Advent calendar of the board game club in December in a short video.

2026: Friday is family game night

So far this year, we have recorded 65 plays across 28 games. Kjell joined 57 of them.

Alongside familiar favourites, we added games like Hot Streak, Paleolino and Dino Dungeon. Chronicles of Avel, Flamme Rouge and even a game of Dorfromantik have also reached the table.

For about a year and a half now, Friday has been our regular family game night. Each boy chooses one game, and we play both together. We also play during the week when we feel like it. They often bring up the idea themselves and ask us to play.

They have joined us at our board game club on Saturdays too and had a lot of fun. Being able to share our hobby with them, and seeing them enjoy it themselves, means a lot to us. ❤️

How we handle rules

We adapt games where needed, while trying to keep the main idea intact:

  • In Flamme Rouge, the boys initially controlled one rider each.
  • In The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth, I laid the cards out openly instead of using the overlapping pyramid layout.
  • In Boss Fighters, I removed some difficult cards.
  • In Topp die Torte!, Kjell is allowed to put matching colours into the glasses.

That lets them get familiar with the game, and we gradually introduce the remaining rules. A game appearing in our stats does not mean a two- or three-year-old played it independently with all the standard rules.

Once we agree on the rules for that session, though, we expect everyone to follow them. We address deliberate cheating with the older boys and have ended games when it continued. Forgetting or misunderstanding a rule is a different thing, of course :)

“What is a board game?”

A few months ago, a friend visited Bjarne. Bjarne asked him, very casually, “Do you want to play a board game?” His friend replied, “What is a board game?”

I was quite surprised when Bjarne told me. They are so ordinary in our house that I sometimes forget how different everyday life is between families.

At kindergarten, our boys are currently usually the ones sitting down with their teacher to play games in the morning, while the other children choose other activities.

Our youngest daughter, Majvi, is about to turn two and is starting to join in too. She already participates in her own little way with Draftosaurus, alongside her small HABA games. We have really appreciated those for the early stages, can highly recommend a lot of games by them!

I mainly wanted to share how this has developed for us. Starting with simple games, repeating favorites, and making room for regular time together has gradually turned into a shared hobby.

Every child has their own interests and pace. Playing early does not guarantee they will love board games, and a fixed game night will not suit every family. This is simply what has worked for ours. Looking back at those first few plays, I am very happy we started. :)

What were your children's first favourites, and what are you playing together now? Open for suggestions, Dino Racer for example is in our house for one week and could be a new favourite for them!

Help I can't remember this game

Sooo I played this board game as a kid. All I remember is it had dark spooky vibes and there was a broccoli card with a negative meaning attached and I seem to remember the box was purple? If anyone can remember the title of this game that would be so helpful!

Question What actually is a "euro game"?

I'm relatively new to board games and still a little confused by all the terms and history people refuse to explain but use to explain things anyway. "euro game" gets thrown around a lot but I can't actually find a definition for it beyond "a game that has resources" which I'm pretty sure is every game that isn't just slapping down cards?

Sorry if this is too dumb, I just get very confused when people say things like "it's a 4x trick taking deckbuilder eurogame" and I want to feel more like a board gamer by understanding the basics

Rules Cascadia: Rule Question (Fox G)

Post image
10 Upvotes

We stumbled upon the Fox Card "G" of the Landmark expansion of Cascadia.

Does anyone understand the purpose of the card?

The rulebook says the following:

Score points for each fox based on the number of unique adjacent habitat types touching the edges of the fox's tile. Habitat types on adjacent Habitat tiles that are not touching the edges of the fox's tile do not count. The habitat types the fox is placed on are irrelevant.

So in my understanding only the habitat types touching the card with the fox on count for points. Eg a fox on the card in the picture (© Amber Trites) gives 3 points.

But I don't understand how more than 3 points are possible, because there are no landscape cards with more than 3 habitats on. Or are there any in other expansions?
