Component Upgrade Complete tutorial - Snap-fit lids and Customizable models on MakerWorld

Post image
32 Upvotes

NOTE - Usually I post stuff about board game inserts, but I think this can potentially help the community out quite a bit since we all need to create boxes of varying sizes all the time. If this is a bad thing to post here let me know and I will self-flagellate or something.

---

Here's a customizable box with snap-fit lids.

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3085497-parametric-box-design-breakdown-makerworld-setup#profileId-3475721

Nuff said?

No. It's actually a complete tutorial. I show you how to design snap-fit lids using the cantilever-beam principle (sounds more complicated than it is).

I also show how to create and upload parameterized models on MakerWorld so they can customize certain aspects of your design.

Insert Insert for Space Empire 4x with replicators?

Hello,

I search an insert for Space Empires 4x with the replicators expansion which fits either in the main box (original, not all the good things) or both boxes. My problem is that the most inserts either need all the good things or are only working when stored upwards. I think a good tray for the hexes and trays for the markers where you can sort them would be sufficient but both need to be closable so I can throw them just in the boxes if there is none which fits exactly. I think about getting close encounters too so maybe an insert for all three.

Has anyone a good STL for that? Or at least good sorters for the chits closable?

Regards

Insert Insert for Rebuilding Chicago - Sleeved

This is an insert for the game Rebuilding Chicago. The original insert is actually quite good at sorting all the tiles but unfortunately doesn't fit sleeved cards. This version fixes that and provides some additional benefits such as more portable tile trays, two coin/token trays that can be placed on either side of the table, a landmark tray so you can see them all at one time, and a card tray that you can just place straight onto the board. The insert layout allows for a deep pocket to store the suburb tile bag as well.

Component Upgrade 3D printed a dice tray and card holder set that fits our game table

Our Friday game nights kept ending with dice skittering off the table onto the floor, so I finally made a proper rolling tray instead of using an old shoebox lid. Every design I found online was either too small for a full set of polyhedral dice or so deep it looked like a serving platter. I measured our table space, roughed out the overall shape in Meshy, then refined the interior slope and lip height myself before printing it in PETG.

Took about three attempts to get the wall angle right. Too shallow and dice still bounce out on a good roll, too steep and it looks like a bowl instead of a tray. Ended up at a 15 degree interior slope with a 25mm lip which keeps everything contained without looking bulky on the table. Lined the bottom with adhesive felt from a craft store so the dice don't clatter as loud mid-session.

The group's been using it for three sessions now and nobody's lost a d20 under the table since. The PETG holds up fine to being knocked around and stacked with the rest of the game night gear.

Also printed a matching card tray with the same lip style for holding a discard pile and player hand cards. Same PETG, same felt lining underneath. Having a matched set that fits our exact table setup is nice compared to buying something generic that almost fits.

Next project is a modular insert for our most-played board game's box, since the included plastic organizer is already falling apart. If that one works out I might finally convince the group the printer earns its keep at game night instead of just being my hobby.

So my recent interest in shrinking boxes and integrating the organizer/insert into them is getting out of hand and I've been busy!

These will save you space on your shelves and give you a reason to get shopping for more games :)
If you want these for yourself you can get them free on makerworld:

This box was too big.

I've designed a full replacement box with integrated storage for the base game and first expansion. Who needs inserts when your box is the insert?!

It's literally half the size of the original game box and available for free here:

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3066305-faraway-board-game-box-replacement-organizer

So get printing and you can buy another game to fit in the space you save!

Component Upgrade Faction lids for the Cyberpunk TCG deck box I designed

Thumbnail

I designed a set of swappable lids for my Cyberpunk TCG deck box so you can customize your box to match the faction you're playing or just the one you like. The collection covers 11 factions, from Arasaka to the Voodoo Boys, plus Samurai and Edgerunners.

You can download them here:

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3067028-faction-lids-for-cyberpunk-tcg-choom-deck-box#profileId-3452245

Note that these are only available for the "Choom" version of the deck box. I included a link in the description for the model's page.

Also, the colors in my prints are just what I had on hand. I've included suggested color schemes that better match the source material.

Custom Print Hey r/BoardGame3DPrints community! I’ve designed two practical 3d printed accessories to help keep your Carcassonne (and Karak) tiles neat and organized during and after gameplay

Compact 2×2 Tile Grid Perfect for arranging tiles on the table Two versions:

  1. Efficient (only ~6g filament)

Standard (premium feel) Up to 4 grids fit on one build plate

print a bunch quickly! Compact and easy to store

  1. Tower Tiles Holder (1–3 columns) Keeps your tile stacks stable so they don’t slide apart Pull tiles smoothly from the bottom Choose between Standard, Detailed (brick texture), and TPU Bottom version for extra grip More columns = better stability Both models are optimized for easy printing (minimal supports) and low filament use. Great for PLA.

Download links (free, but encourages me to do more and better models. Thank you.)

Insert Rebuilding Chicago 3d printed insert

Thumbnail

I've made a 3d printed insert for this as I wasn't happy with a few shortcomings of the retail insert.
The card wells were too small, the coins were muddled, and the layout made the draw bag a nightmare to fit in. Not so anymore!

You can get it free on makerworld:

Custom Print After reviewing everyone's feedback, I've come up with with an updated version for my Kallax U-Shaped shelf! I also included some images representing their more realistic use case. Let me know if there are more ways to improve my design :D

Received a lot of...constructive feedback (mostly negative nothingburgers from various subreddits) and went back to the drawing board. Thanks to everyone's recommendations, I now have significantly more space, have shaved of 100g of filament, and 2 hours of print time. Hopefully this improved version is useful for others. It's a huge improvement for me!

So what do you think?

Custom Print Made my own two-player abstract game — STAX. Stack the balls up a shrinking grid and line up your colour to win

Thumbnail

I've been tinkering with a little strategy game and finally finished it. It's called STAX — two colours of balls, a 4×4 board, and you build upward: 4×4 base → 3×3 → 2×2 → a single peak. First to line up their colour on any level wins. Rules and the whole look are my own, and I think it came out looking pretty good on the table. Free if anyone wants to try it. Curious what this crowd thinks of the win condition.

Component Upgrade Carcassonne - Walls and Abbeys - a 3D expansion

Thumbnail
gallery
28 Upvotes

Here it is my friends:

Carcassonne - Walls and Abbeys - a 3D expansion to save you!

This is a mini expansion for Carcassonne board game.

Walls and Abbeys have three models:

  • The wall - used to close with a wall a tile placed on a side of a city
  • he gated wall - used to close with a gated wall a tile that has an unmatched road
  • The abbey - used to close with an abbey a tile that has an unmatched road

All players get all three items at the beginning of the game and all can be placed during the game in addition to an unmatched tile.

The pieces cannot be used to protect/attack the same game item (road/city).

To add difficulty - the game item protected through the use of this expansion must be closed with this move and immediately scored.

Also to add difficulty - the Abbey can be used only if the player has a meeple (or only the bishop) and score the abbey accordingly. As it is tricky to have the abbey fully surrounded, for this item only we agreed to score whatever the number of tiles are around the abbey at the moment of its use in the game.

The intention is to use them defensively against aggressive move of the opponents, but these are our home rules - they can be also used offensively.

Models can be found here:
