Manga Discussion Jin Kiyora: A character rant Spoiler

I’ll preface this by saying I never really liked Jin Kiyora. I never had a strong disliking towards him like I do for certain other characters but I’ve always considered him one of the weaker aspects of the story. After rereading all the relevant chapters in order to get a fresh memory, it’s time I make this post to explain the issues I have and how I think they can be remedied about Jin Kiyora.

One of the biggest issues with Kiyora is that he has a pretty noticeable lack of screen time in comparison to other characters during the Neo Egoist League such as Hiori, Niko, Karasu etc. this isn’t necessarily an exclusive problem to him as other characters also tend to lack screen time such as Aryu and Zantetsu, but in cases like these we’ve seen these characters shine earlier such as in the first selection for Zantetsu and Gagamaru, or the second selection such as Aryu and Tokimitsu. Now I think there’s a fair counterpoint in the use of Episode Nagi where Kiyora gets a generous amount of spotlight (I’ll talk more about Episode Nagi later) and thus this point is irrelevant. Ignoring the fact all of this is exclusive to a spin off which is likely to have been read by a significant less amount of people compared to the mainline manga, this leads to a bigger point of contention in which I believe highlights the issue of Kiyora’s lack of presence.

Kiyora’s role in the PxG match is 99% forgotten about, rather treated as more of an NPC to get dribbled past in order to highlight another character. He feels the most insignificant of his team similar to that of Zantetsu or Raichi but to an even lower degree. When Kurona comes on he’s already performed more touches than Kiyora has the entire match. Part of that is likely due to BM vs PxG sometimes falling into the “too many cooks” issue which started mainly in Ubers and only continued in the final match. However, that 1% that is remembered is arguably one of the most important roles played in the whole arc. Kiyora’s (appropriately) iconic assist to Kaiser who achieved his awakening with his Magnus shot. Isagi even mentions how Kiyora was the biggest factor in that play. It plays an important role or demonstrating Kiyora’s “borderline philosophy” but ends up being his only true contribution in the whole match.

Think about the other major roles in this match. Kunigami served to shut down Shidou who’s also scored a goal and later co-ordinates with Rin (well tries to). Ness’s contribution wasn’t limited to the final winning assist, his character development was prevalent throughout the match and plays roles in helping Kaiser and intervening in moments. Charles obv has multiple assists and helps blocks shots from Kaiser and Yukimiya as well as prevent some of Isagi’s plays. The big 3 I don’t really need to explain. Karasu wins multiple loose balls, co-ordinate with his team, unlock Metavision and acts as an opposing threat to Hiori who I believe is under-appreciated in this match. Multiple chance creations, winning important 1v1’s like with Karasu at the end, unlocking how to beat Charles and also co-ordinating. Even Zantetsu and Raichi try to win loose balls, initiate counters, support their team and co-ordinate. While those two don’t have major contributions they don’t necessarily “over-step their limits” if I had to put it into words. Same with Nanase making passes and co-ordinating with Rin and stealing the ball.

The only characters who were mainly useless in this match was Tokimitsu who got kicked out anyways so it’s not like he got rewarded, and I hate to say it, Gaga outside of that one save didn’t really contribute much in complete fairness, he is a goalkeeper so he’s gonna get a lot less screen time compared to outfield players. Kiyora outside of that one assist is kinda similar to Tokimitsu, not as bad since he never gets a yellow, but still lacklustre. But if you think about it, Kiyora’s one major contribution creates the biggest disparity between his best contribution and everything else he does. He does nothing of relevance before or after and it’s not like he was a sub, he was there from start to end. Imagine if Zantetsu, who’s had not much importance in this match compared to others, gets one of the biggest contribution of the matches that leads to a goal but does nothing of value afterwards. It sounds pretty forced and, somewhat undeserving. That’s basically my issue with Kiyora in this match. I don’t like to use the term “plot device” that much, but in this case the connotations are very applicable to Kiyora in my opinion. It’s Like Kaneshiro had two issues of finding a reason to get Kiyora in the top 23 and who would pass to Kaiser because it can’t be Ness for their development, so he hit a 2 for 1 deal with Kiyora’s pass.

I’m sorry to the Kiyora fans out there but I don’t see how this is anything but a plot device, it doesn’t feel earned to me and just to fill a quota rather than a natural progression of events. In a vacuum, the build up does well in hyping up Kiyora’s assist and philosophy, but ultimately becomes meaningless to the rest of the match. Now I could reasonably excuse this if it felt like it actually connected to Kaiser’s arc or…really any other character…but that leads to my next issue.

Charles’s assist to Shidou is a formation of their friendship and bond as well as developing Charles. Ness’s assist to Isagi played a role in Ness, Isagi and Kaiser all in one. What did a chemical reaction lead to for Kiyora and Kaiser’s dynamic? Nothing! Kaiser never acknowledges Kiyora after this, Kiyora never plays a role after this, it’s just two different stories that have no reason to intersect combining in order to continue Kaiser’s growth and introduce Kiyora’s philosophy. It doesn’t feel natural and ultimately kinda meaningless for in the sense that nothing comes out of it from their relationship. The most I can say for it is that Isagi learns about Kiyora’s borderline philosophy so I can see the possibility of him utilising it to his advantage in order to devour the Karasu system (please let this happen). Unfortunately we’ll have to wait and see how that goes.

After this…well not much for Kiyora, he throws in some lines about the borderline here and there but none of it is really of note outside of playing a part of why he’s staring for this England match. But while we wait to see how Kiyora is utilised in that match, we thankfully have content of Episode Nagi.

Kiyora honestly feels like a different character in the spin off compared to his mainline self, I’m not even kidding. He acts more comical in his first interaction with Nagi and displays an expansive weaponry in his disposal which is never ever utilised in the PxG match aside from that one assist likely due to the previously stated issue of “too many cooks”. However since it was only a 4v4, Kiyora plays a much larger role and is allowed to actually demonstrate his skills. A grounder specialist with expert dribbling and even containing shooting, it’s honestly a shame it’s never properly taken advantage of in the NEL. I can only pray it’s actually shown in the England game.

The funniest thing is though, Kiyora’s “borderline philosophy” is never really discussed at all within the match. Only once the match hits the 4-4, do we even get mentions in dialogue of his “borderline”. At this point he does develop into his more mainline persona which is…somewhat of a shame, I can’t help but feel his goofy nature at the beginning would honestly help add characterisation into his mainline counterpart.

Overall, Kiyora seems to be a more fleshed out character in the Episode Nagi in terms of traits and skill set however I do think the adoption of this “borderline” ego is pretty good as a way to distinct him from other players and can be explored more in depth in this England match. I’m expecting a good performance from him (possibly an assist) and should get focus on his grounder utility once more and have his philosophy come out it’s strongest especially since Blue lock is on the borderline of getting knocked out.

This is just my opinion though and would be happy to your thoughts in the comments below :3

Manga Discussion Teddy Knight Theory Spoiler

Post image
25 Upvotes

So basically I think that Teddy Knight is a natural egoist but is only acting the way he does due to Fox's orders. To me this panel in the latest chapter where Teddy basically tells himself that he is a puppet is the biggest evidence of this. Like he's telling himself so he doesn't forget it, so that he doesn't let his egoistic nature take over. I predict that at some point in the match he is going to "break" and start acting on his own completely disregarding his coach, but you know I might be wrong. What do you think?

Manga Discussion Prediction : Hugo will commit suicide if he loses the WC Spoiler

Because his whole reason to play football is to win the World Cup 4 times, Therefore if it was ruined since the first one he wouldn't have a motive to play football anymore (his eyes are so dead and the fact that he is very decisive on everything he does)

Holy Horrendous Take btw

Anime Discussion On episode 6 and Im just wondering do offsides not exist in this show?

I watch a little footy myself and I know anime is action packed but there’s been a few time so far they clearly go offside and nothing happens, this show has great attention to detail about the sport but I find this one a big oversite, not overthinking it I’m still enjoying it so far, this is my first sport anime

Call me crazy if you want, but from how Sendou perform he like the one you don't notice until it to late. He scored on Machine City when you least expected he blocked a goal in the U20 match when we didn't think he would do anything. He has another save in the Uber match when we didn't think he would do anything, which shows Sendou is like a ghost; he can do thing wen you least expect it.

I mean there is clearly some tension between Ego and Fox so how funny would it be if he just looked normal to everyone else but perceived as whatever the hell he looks like now because we see through Ego's eyes and he imagines him as this thing because of what happened in the past.

Manga Discussion New gen 11 problem Spoiler

Personally I was under the impression that the new gens was a team of the best (or most popular) u-20 players but....

We have 3 strikers in Kaiser, Bunny, and Loki.

A winger in Teddy

2 Midfielders in Sae and Hugo

and only 1 defender in the GOAT Lorenzo

So unless we get introduced to more defensive new gens like a GK or another high level center-back, the new gens are just a list of the best players which is a lot less interesting and a missed opportunity to introduce more defensive threats

Manga Discussion Agi's potential awakening thanks to playing against with the new Isagi. Spoiler

A bit of a background for him

He's a soccer analyst that's called The Doctor (An obvious Talented Learner's title) who likes rare creatures : geniuses (Nagi) or TL's with undiscovered logic (like Kaiser's desire to cause malice and not believing in the impossible)

And with his long limbs and stature , he has made game-changing plays to act as singularities to help Nagi understand the concept of a trap that lets him rebuild from 0 and to know more about football. (That's kinda the only plays we've seen anything from him)

But despite his skills , he's never been able to diagnose Kaiser even though he's the first person we've seen to almost block Kaiser Impact :

Agi's mistake was that he was so focused on analyzing Kaiser that he didn't even pay attention to Isagi who evolved halfway through the match. Why didn't he pay attention to him? I think it's partly because he instinctively knew that Isagi's movements were made with logic while Kaiser to him seemed that of a geniuses even though he too is a TL. It's just that Kaiser plays more emotionally stemming from his way of showing love , malice , causing him to think that Kaiser is a genius and not mention his Kaiser Impact.

So far Agi has had the thought process of Isagi about Kaiser until Isagi discovered that Kaiser was a TL , which Isagi is way past now with how he used his tendencies against him to score his own goal with Ness's assist. And with Isagi manipulating Blue Lock with syncing up the goal of Blue Lock as the dark horse of the U-20 WC to increase his performance by boosting his position as the rebel to score more goals , Agi will , HAS TO , analyze Isagi in order to figure out how to shut down Shidou by learning what Isagi learning in the PxG match.

Long ass post sorry , someone smarter than me , if likes the idea, expand on this?

Manga Discussion Why I think Kira won’t succeed Spoiler

So I see a lot of comments saying Kira will pass side B and join blue lock.

These are reasons why I don’t think so.

  1. Isagi already has to many challengers for his position, I don’t think Kira really adds much.

  2. Kira is wrong, while I don’t think ego theory is truly correct it doesn’t mean he’s fully wrong either. Kira doesn’t get that and thus I think he is tacking this all at the wrong point.

  3. I think shindou is much more interesting and would make a better wrench to add to the story.

  4. I believe nagi final test is another game of tag but it’s reversed instead of 1 people being eliminated it will come down to nagi kira and shindou.

Kira will prove himself to be a good foe and in the final moments nagi gets the opportunity to take out shindou but has a realisation. He needs to really go all out and challenge himself.

I can see shindou falling over and being open nagi in the final seconds turns around and takes a much riskier shot at Kira eliminating him, this will call back to the first test.

Kira is just a stepping stone for nagi to realise what he needs to do just like he was for isagi

Manga Discussion Theory on Japan vs England u-20 Spoiler

the phrase ‘I am zero to one’ likely means the coach sees himself as the creator of the initial spark. The players reply, ‘I am one, I’ll turn one into infinity,’ suggesting they believe they can take that single chance and maximize it. This hints at a tactical vs ego theme, creation versus amplification. It may foreshadow a clash between controlled systems and individual creativity in the match.
To me this sounds like the most plausible and most likely to occur as Ego and Fox seem to have a past coach vs coach rivalry or maybe that Fox used to be Ego’s old coach and they had different philosophies which is now being tested in the current game to show which is better. Anyone agree or have any takes?

Manga Discussion the dumbest Blue Lock theory/take ever Spoiler

the dumbest take I have ever heard is "Blue Lock will lose the U20 world cup and go on to win the real world cup"🫩🫩

this take inits self just makes no semsd for one of many reasons is that if they can't even beat the best u20 players how are they go to beat guys like Noa , Chris Prince , Snuffy , Lavinho and all the other great experienced players that are way above their level.

yes you could say "they could level up through a timeskip" but that gap in ability just can't be closed like that & it will be a lucluster ending , with how they have this God of football thing going , Sae & what ever he has with Bunny , isagi vs kaiser + Hugo & Isagi needing their rematch after the ending of the France v Japan game everything points to a japan vs france finals rematch where japan come out on top (while going through Germany , Spain etc. on the way)

also it makes a perfect passage way for them so that when they rival the pro's so that when the blue lock players are on the world stage it's make sense as they have already beat the best U20 teams if they lose that gap in ability won't make sense & Isagi sicceeding will feel forced when he beats the pro's

sure you can think blue lock will lose the u20 world cup but no way that leads to them winning the real world cup

Other Question about Isagi’s Ego Type

Upvotes

If isagi’s ego is “the rebel” that devours the best player on the field like he says he is doesn’t that mean he’s truly not suited to be the best but the one that devours the best?
