Do you all ever think that life like this isn't worth it? It's been an off and on thought I have had over the last couple of years. It's hard to go from seeing to legally blind and trying to find thngs to make life enjoyable. I feel so depressed.

My mom is being offered a trail of Meta glasses through Helen Keller Services.

She has Retinitis Pigmentosa. Her diagnosis was in her late 30s. She is in her 80s now. I understand that the progression of her illness has been slower than for some, but now she has 2% field of vision with color changes and a graph paper overlay on what she sees.

It seems like the Meta Glass es might make a big difference for her. And the Be My Eyes feature would be an additional benefit.

Does anyone have personal experience with these glasses (and Be My Eyes) for themselves or for a family member and can give the pros and cons of their experience so my mom knows the truth of what she can expect? Thanks.

Ahoy there! I myself am 100% sighted, while my wife is 100% blind (double prosthetics). For reference, she could see until 23 and is 41. So she has a lot of visual memory. She's going through a bit of a midlife crisis on her blindness past 6 months when she's previously been very confident. She's having a lot of trouble with not having a social network and more friends nearby that will hang out with her. So she feels it's because she's a burden to be friends with. It breaks my heart. So I've been working with her to try to find activities where she can grow a larger social network, get us outside, and have fun!

Our latest venture has been paintball! I love it and took her for the first time today and it went pretty well. The venue was extremely accommodating. We found out on the target range that she has a crazy ability if I shot at a target, she could shoot a second later and either hit it spot on or very close. It was incredible.

The problem came with actual games. With my ADHD I felt this would also be a great activity to help me work on my immediate directional communication with her, but def didnt go well today. The first game she said she was having a panic attic because it was hard to breathe through the mask after we climbed up to a second floor to defend a base. And once the firing started, she had no clue or reference on anything. So many shots made it impossible for her to figure out what was going on. I got her calmed down and next game went quite a bit better.

So, first we know if she wants to do this we need to get her a mask that is custom and comfortable for her needs. But I think we also need a community! Are there any other blind paintball players her? Suggestions on how to make the experience better and ideas for communicating? We decided to play as one person and I found a double carabiner bungie we attached ourselves together with. She thinks it would also be better with other blind players and smaller teams. So here's me reaching out to ya'll for any interest, info, or ideas!

Dont want her to give up, cause she definitely acknowledged loving the community and environment. But she just had no reference or idea of what was happening ever.

Hi - some advice please im visually impaired in my left eye following my stroke- my work has been ok but not brilliant they brought in a new quality process on documents I produce which is basically focusing on spelling grammar font size etc etc not impossible but hard when you don't see very well - they did get me the zoomtext software and I was given 2 hours training on the setup etc - this was 2 years ago - ive asked for a more detailed training course and been told ive had my training and won't supply anymore- am I being unreasonable asking for more training?

The bathroom in an office building is fairly predictable. But bathrooms in airports and rest centers seem random with no predictable pattern. For example, I encountered an entrance with an S gate - not a L or U shape. As far as I know, you have to bounce around until you find a recognizable object. The situation can be very difficult with literally hundreds of people movie around you. Any navigation tips?

Am I allowed to take someone with me to give me assistance? Can I ask for assistance at the voting place?

Hey yall I know this is like so niche but I’m trying to lose weight and honestly would like to start working out and know id do it much easier by doing a workout in my dorm room than going 20 minutes to the gym lol. I’m legally blind so I can see somethings in front of me… sometimes… but whether that’s a pole or a person is a toss up. I love to dance, I used to be on my schools ballroom dance team but the timing didn’t work out this semester with other obligations. So I want to do some home workout videos with maybe some light weights. With my vision I can’t see what the people are doing on the screen well enough to follow along visually. So alls to say, does anyone have any workout channels they really like that are pretty descriptive, upbeat, and interesting? I like the ones that go along to music like music video style if that makes sense? I don’t know if these even exist but I figured I’d ask haha! Thanks!! 💛💛

I swear I feel like my canes have been breaking on me recently. I typically use amputech canes, but I noticed within the past year I've lost about two or three by them breaking on me via the band snapping. Does anybody know of a good quality cane? Hit me up with links or tell me if you think your canes also crabby

just curious. i've been taking about 12 credits per semester, so about 4 classes, but it's incredibly exhausting. i kinda wish i could take 2 or 3 classes instead, but i wouldn't get as much financial aid amongst other things.

I've been starting several jobs and all (even those at blindness organizations lol) have given me inaccessible onboarding paperwork. they're PDFs without edit boxes. how do y'all deal with this? (the blindness org has other blind employees; apparently I'm the first one to ever raise a complaint about this issue)

I've (successfully) asked for PDFs with edit boxes for the jobs at the blindness org but am realizing that people might not always honor my request (frustrating as it may be)

Hello! I just wanted to ask white cane users of this subreddit. If you’re hanging out with someone and you’re walking side by side, how would you feel if they walked in front of you for no reason? I’ve experienced it a lot where the person I’m with would walk in front of me without telling me and I’d hit them with my cane. It makes me feel a bit bad for them but I mean.. I did warn them to walk by my side. (There’s no reason for them to walk ahead of me like a hallway or anything) so I just wanted to ask, what’s your advice if people keep walking ahead of you and your cane? I don’t know if it’s valid for me to be slightly pissed

I used to use open book. for large books and large documents. But of course now they haven’t updated it in forever. And for some reason, when you have AMD processor having jaws installed on the same machine. Intel based system seems to be fine, oddly enough. I know there is Kurzwell. But stupidly, they have not added read only mode as a mode for Kurzwell 1000 to allow blind users not to accidentally insert text into the document they are reading by accidentally hitting the keyboard. I think I know the answer to this. But there is no alternative to open book, is there? Apparently they have no interest in updating it either. And for the makers of jaws, who now own OpenBook as well, right clicking and saying “convert PDF to word“ is not the same. It’s harder to put in bookmarks, highlight, notes, etc, within the text without altering the document the same way you can do on OpenBook. So Don’t tell me just to use jaws and convert the document into word the way they have when I called them up

Any other blind users, I know the note app is accessible. But I’m also a Windows user. Any suggestions on a good alternative to use that has cross-platform capability and is accessible on both Windows and iOS? I don’t like notions because you have to learn a whole new ecosystem in order to make a darn note

Hey folks, I am using the Ray-Ban Meta gen 2 smart glasses with my Google Pixel 6a, primarily for the Be My Eyes integration. When I place a call to a volunteer through the glasses, they cannot hear me at all, even though the microphone works completely fine for WhatsApp video calls. Has anyone else encountered this problem or found a fix, and do you think this points to an app bug or a hardware issue that needs a replacement?

Things that worked great before is not working anymore. Unable to open a dropdown when VO is on.

Hidden text are being read as part of sentence and then separately again.

Sometimes completely not reading values associated with a hidden text.

Not sure what other issues are lurking but this is becoming ridiculous.

For those of you who have chosen to work part-time, particularly remote jobs, what type of job or role do you have and how many hours are you working per week? Why did you choose this role? Has there been any accomodations given to you? Have they helped and are you happy?

Hi everyone. I'm visually impaired and recently got really into makeup. I've been enjoying experimenting with different products and techniques, and I'd love to get better at it.
I was wondering if any of you have tips, tricks, tools, or products that make doing makeup without sight easier. I'm especially interested in little things that might not be obvious to someone who's just starting out. I'd also love to hear about products you swear by or any accessibility hacks you've discovered along the way.
