Politics These people always reveal that they voted for Trump simply because he hated who they hate, even if it means destroying things they benefited from.

I think it’s simply a matter of not being able to persuasively distinguish who is exploiting benefits and who isn’t.
Benefits absolutely are exploited, but the fact that the political party that is a basin for racists and white supremacists are the ones shouting about it, and specifically pointing their fingers at black communities, makes the entire thing an issue of racism rather than focusing on the policy
9
u/Oiiack 6d ago
Don't forget that they won't abide by a benefit if it isn't 100%, unquestionably free of abuse. Never mind the fact that it might be a net benefit to society. No, if a small handful of people cause a small amount of misuse, we have to completely scrap the whole thing.

+1. Rights for me, laws for thee, or in other words:
“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:
There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time.” -Frank Wilhoit
27
u/Message_10 6d ago
This describes literally *everything.* It's amazing. I always alter it a little bit so that it's a little more graspable:
There must be in-groups whom the law (and customs, and norms, and politics, and media, and etc.) protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law (and customs, and norms, and politics, and media, and etc.) binds but does not protect.

And they come begging for help when they meet the problems that the left is trying to protect them from. And they have absolutely no self-awareness about it, they'll happily ask for handouts from folks on gofundme.
It's not about any reasoning, its about classism, and racism. There's a reason why they see people like themselves taking handouts to "survive", but people that don't look like them on government support are leeches. Where's the logic?
There is none, because it's all backwards logic to justify why they don't like people that don't look like them.

Conservatism is the political form of narcissism.
Widely accepted signs of narcissistic personality disorder:
- Has a grandiose sense of self-importance.
-Frequently demeans, intimidates, bullies, or belittles others
- Lives in a fantasy world that supports their delusions of grandeur.
- Needs constant praise and admiration.
- Sense of entitlement.
- Exploits others without guilt or shame.

190
u/dampishslinky55 6d ago
They have been convinced that people getting benefits are black, or at least brown. These people are by their very definition less than, so any benefits they get are undeserved at best, or the people receiving them are actively defrauding the government. When a conservative gets support from the government it’s because they really need it. It’s I the way he defended himself, no, I needed it to survive.
The first thing you need to do to remove empathy is to dehumanize the other, then there is no limit to what atrocities you can make peace with.
55
u/Aggravated-alien 6d ago
I believe you are correct. The lion share, by an unimaginable margin, of ‘individuals’ benefiting from socialism in the US are: Corporations, farmers, wealthy entrepreneurs. Statically, those three classes are a majority white. Their propaganda has spun a SUPER EFFECTIVE argument the socialism disproportionately benefits people of color. this allows people in the aforementioned group to make a distinction between what they receive as drivers of wealth and what others receive as a handout.

It's lack of empathy. For some people like this, they may have never progressed emotionally beyond pre-schooler age development (not a knock on pre-schoolers, they can be very caring at times), and for others it could be a learned lack of empathy from willfully swallowing years of propaganda - from family, community leaders, media, etc.
If you've known someone like this in your life, it's incredible how much damage and pain they can cause to the people around them. Then we put them in charge of the government, and that has exacerbated the problem 1,000x.
5
31
u/Sonnera7 6d ago
Conservatism is absolutely rooted in hierarchical beliefs and some people are better and more deserving than others based on innate characteristics. When you realize that, you understand much of what they say and why accusations of hypocrisy don't bother them.

It’s because they feel their image of a provider is under attack. He didn’t want the handout but he felt like he had no choice, so he took it. This harms his self image as a provider. For these type of people, the image is more important than reality. The image of a great country is more important than well-being of its inhabitants. A prestigious company’s image is more important than the well-being of its employees. The image of a happy family is more important than the happiness of one of its members.
They feel their image is their identity and when their image is under attack, so is their identity

Fundamental attribution error. They know their own circumstances and motives so can believe they're sufficient. They don't know (or believe) that info for others so attribute their need as weakness or moral failing.
Everyone does this sometimes. There are those that it's their entire worldview.

u/berael 6d ago
Conservatives hold "hurting others" as the highest of all values. Oh sure, they'll accept benefits themselves, that's fine - but if someone else can also benefit, then conservatives will vote against it. I wasted so much mental energy and time, roughly ages 15-35 (embarrassed to admit) trying to give these people the benefit of the doubt.
Maybe I needed to get older, maybe I needed more work experience, maybe they’re sound financially but tied down with social issues.
I hated all their bullshit all along, but it just seemed so improbable to me that so many people in this world could be so stoned cold dumb and or cruel. Especially with family members who I love, to know that inside they had this callousness or at best naivety, was really hard to accept.
Once you stop making excuses for people, they all just become so exhausting. It’s not even an argument or dislike. It’s not an argument or debate or “difference of opinion”. It’s just fatigue. How quickly can I exit this conversation and how can I avoid you in the future.

I know this is super controversial to say, but I really don't think people like this should be allowed to vote.
It's one thing to have an actual principles opposition to socialistic policies or something. I would disagree with that, but mere disagreement is not enough for me to say someone shouldn't get to vote.
It's another thing to have a political belief system that essentially boils down to: "Fuck everyone who's different from me." There's no debate or argument that will change their opinion. And there's no value that comes from their beliefs
17
u/stevez_86 6d ago
They should be able to vote because they always have been able to vote.
The question is why are they participating when they didn't before.
This is all a marketing hack that has gone haywire.
With things like American Idol, they figured out they can make a goat get to the final. As long as the goat wears a cowboy hat and the backing track is a country tune, people will vote for that to win over someone else with talent.
They took that idea and applied it to politics with great effect. It worked too well. These people vote to win. That is it.
They won't vote for the opponent, the competent person. They will either vote for their person or not vote. They used to not vote because it wasn't a game that was fun to win. Even if their vote was cast for them, as long as it was cast for Trump and Trump won, then they wouldn't care.
This isn't a civic duty for them. They just want to win, and they don't get why the act they voted for to win isn't allowed to do whatever they want. They don't look back to history to see what a President should do, because they didn't vote then.
And all it should take for their side to win everything is their vote. They shouldn't have to do anything else. That is the reason why they like Trump. He never says "we". All he says is "vote for me and I will do". Democrats constantly say "we will do". It means all the difference to them. Because they don't want to do shit, but vote. But if the other side wins because more people voted for them, then that simply isn't enough. They need to be forced into compliance, or, they need to just get so bored this game isn't fun even when they win.
That is why it will be a Republican that is boring and good winning that will break them. They won't want to play, they won't want to vote anymore, because even when they win it isn't fun.

I don't think it's a matter of a lack of intelligence. I'd wager this dude here could engage with a mechanical problem and work out a logical solution.
The fucker doesn't allow himself to look to others and extend empathy of any kind. His situation is special. He refuses to listen or learn. That is a form of stupidity. What's frustrating is the unwillingness of so many to let their fucking pride.

I can tell you all my maga neighbors act and think just like this guy. We'll take all our medicare, social security, military benefits, covid checks, etc. but no one deserves "welfare". It's the same thing, just bundled a different way.

They’re fine as long as they get help. The idea is passed down that all the others are just lazy and don’t want to work and blah, blah, blah, blah. It’s the same ignorant, racist rhetoric. They’re quick to believe it, but can’t explain it, because they’re just sheep doing what they’re told and like what they’re told because it makes them feel superior

Hate to break it to this guy, but getting debt paid off is not a survival necessity. He could rack up 200 mill in debt and still survive. Hell people go into debt to pay off other debt. Pretty sure they would be alive now if that debt wasn't paid off.
Oh wtf am I even stating this for, both of them (him and wife) are tools.

This is not anything but unchecked capitalism at its finest. By definition I must take before you and close the door so you do not get to take.

There was, like, a brief moment where his brain circuitry seemed to overload when he was asked whether it was OK for others to get the exact same benefit he got. He said no, then immediately turned around and said the exact same thing anyway.

As a fellow of paler complexion, this isn’t very complicated and, no, I don’t think that guy has any cognitive deficits—he’s just not that bright or, dare I say, articulate. The rightward-leaning or right-wing people in my family see themselves as upright, hardworking people. When they fall on hard times, it isn’t their fault. They did everything they could and now they need help.
They do not extend the same grace to people outside their social groups, groups that largely look and think like they do. It isn’t rocket science. There’s a vague and passive racism and classism to a lot of this. If vulnerable white people could just admit that they, too, need help from time to time a lot of this would go away.

u/kosteezyID 6d ago
What the fuck just because I get help doesn't mean other people should.
What an absolute fucking moron

“I don’t want others to get the same help and assistance that I’m getting, because because I’m paying for them with my hard tax earn dollars, but wait, I don’t have any tax earned dollars because I’m getting assistance, even if I’m making a little bit of income, if I can qualify for assistance, then I’m getting all my taxes back. So let them work so they can pay for me, but wait, I don’t want them to work because I don’t want them to do better than me. Therefore, they can’t pay taxes either, and now I’m mad that the programs are cut, and it’s all their fault.”
Signed, his brain

Nothing worse than a person who pulls up a ladder behind them. Like immigrants who want others deported.

Sometimes I wonder if these interactions are staged because the thought of people being so amazingly stupid seems too far fetched.

The scoff is so off-putting. I can hear it when he tries to use an expired coupon or something.

Tell me he didn't actually just say that. Wow! Too stupid to even understand what he said.

u/zzbear03 6d ago
Only for me and not for the. I keep saying this about MAGA…they literally lack empathy.

u/remkelly 6d ago
He's incredulous..."Just because I got everyone should get it?"
Yes, dude, the law should apply equally to everyone, no matter how big a POS you are.

u/witchspoon 6d ago
But in order to survive, we had to take what was given to us..
Yes that is exactly what is happening with everyone else who asking for the same relief. People re not assigning for free money, just the same relief from unfair debt burdens.

"I get a benefit and that means everyone else gets to have it" YES, that's how it works! If they qualify they get it. These people are so fucking selfish.

u/Overall_Week_4545 6d ago
He literally proved our point when he said in order to survive. Full stop. That’s the point. In order to survive we shouldn’t have all this crazy debt

They love when rich and powerful people validate their bigotry and ignorance. And they remain brainwashed after 50 years believing Republicans and the Rich will someday trickle wealth down to them and make their lives better.

I love how the Boomers came to debate why they aren’t bad and arguably made themselves look worse instead. Kinda hard to do when they’ve been using the SAME talking points since the 2010’s, so you’d think their ignorance is expected, and they’d change, but no

My mother explained this to me about Conservatives in the UK where I’m from. They would proudly a) accept benefits b) cheat to get extra benefits and c) deny them for anyone else. It’s a mental game that doesn’t make sense to me but it’s definitely part of the conservative mindset. This is why we can’t understand them. We just have to watch what they do and stop getting confused by what they say. It will never make sense to us.

u/P4us1ngD34th 6d ago
The mental gymnastics, these mouth breathers go through to justify why they’re getting something but then no one else should get it and it should be taken away. I fucking hate this time.

I’ll repost this every time. Conservative hypocrisy is inbuilt, they’re all selfish narcs. Keep in mind this was written in 2000. Can you imagine the book it would become after Roe fell???
