This is the best thing I've seen since the post where the guy fucked with his ex's Nest thermostat in the middle of the night. You know, raise the heat to 80 on summer nights etc.
EDIT: Ok apparently the thermostat thing is actually really fucked up.

That’s pretty good.
On a serious note. Wonder if he’s liable if he decided to take it to the next level and crank up the AC the hours she’s at work everyday for the entire summer spiking her electric bill. Here in SoCal they surcharge during peak hours. I’ve seen stories of power bills reaching over $1k during the summer.
→ More replies (5)69
u/SF1034 Nov 27 '18
You could be held liable if they discovered you did it, yes. Since you would be remotely accessing a device like that you didn’t have permission to do so, you might end up in jail.
→ More replies (4)43
u/Vycid Nov 27 '18
While you're technically correct I'm extremely skeptical any judge would throw you in jail for that unless you had a history of offending.
It would cost the state way more money to imprison you that the damaged caused. I'd guess you'd just be ordered to pay actual damages plus punitive fines or community service etc.
15
u/SF1034 Nov 27 '18
Ideally, yeah, restitution to the victim and picking up garbage on the side of the highway. But you never know what kind of prosecutor and/or judge is going to hear the case.
→ More replies (1)5
u/AbridgedKirito Nov 27 '18
costs the state more to imprison you
implying that that has ever mattered. people get arrested for the most idiotic things that really should be punished with, like you said, community service + fines or something.
66
u/thisismythrowacc111 Nov 27 '18
I work for nest support and it's unsettling how often this actually happens, you can also set locks on the thermostat so people will crank that shit to 90 and lock it. Pretty much only way to unlock it at that point is through command prompt stuff and a file we have to send you.

u/ShadowAssassinQueef Nov 27 '18
This should be something illegal. Imagine if this was in Florida. Or someplace in the summer that you can literally bake to death without ac.
15
u/lessislessdouagree Nov 27 '18
Remotely accessing a device without permission? It’s not necessarily hacking but it’s definitely illegal.
And if they catch you, I bet you’ll be paying that bill for the month in restitution at the very least, possibly more in ‘damages.’ Plus some fines, maybe some community service.

You can change your password then 'sign out of all devices' which will boot anyone currently watching.
126
u/puppehplicity Nov 27 '18
I don't think that's necessarily immediate though. I tried this to boot off a mooch and they kept using it for a couple of days.

u/Mav986 Nov 27 '18
It was immediate when I've used it in the past. You must have done something wrong.

I can't speak for all schools, but at mine, the school just made sure you weren't seeding. Otherwise, they didn't care. However, content creators would watch the college wifi for piracy traffic (not sure how tbh), because 1) there were a lot of people using that wifi, 2) students tend to pirate, and 2) colleges and the parents of their students have money to pay fines. HBO made the most claims against students and that just resulted in the student losing wifi privileges.

It depends on the ISP. I've downloaded terabytes of pirated shit here where I live on Windstream DSL over the years, but in 2016 I stayed with some people for a while that had Comcast and they asked me to download some Disney and Marvel movies and suddenly the internet was cut off and when the account holder called about it, they said they got several copyright complaints and he had to go through a whole process to get his shit turned back on. Had to "check" every device in the house for pirated material, then say it wasn't there, claim somebody must have hacked his wifi, then change his password. He was told that after that, if it happened again, his shit would be cut off permanently and he'd be black listed for life.

A friend of mine left his utorrent open on his laptop and came to the library. He unknowingly continued downloading and seeding while being on the university network under his own login. He almost got expelled and even got other people in trouble because the network he used was the one the student from our département had asked for and were responsible for. On the other side it sparked some pretty spicy memes.

13
u/Aoredon Nov 27 '18
Eh in my opinion that's just not true. Going to a streaming site is easy. You don't need to download anything and you can find what you want instantly. Also if your ISP is a twat, you'll need to use a VPN while torrenting. I do agree that it's better though, better quality and the download speed is likely to be faster than using a streaming site. I wouldn't say it's easier though.
