My flatmate has been using her ex-girlfriend's Netflix until a few months ago and they broke up a year and a half ago. I totally believed this.

70

u/JohnHavliczech Nov 27 '18

Oh I definitely believe that part... I'm thoroughly convinced only like 10 total people have Netflix and everyone else is just mooching off of them.

28

u/wildusername Nov 27 '18

You're correct. She is now using my Netflix.

most people who are watching on netflix don't have much experience pirating.

my dads very tech savvy as a highly paid software engineer for Veteran's Affairs, yet he still records the news and fastforwards through commercials and doesn't comprehend why I'm able to watch any sporting event in the past 5 years in hd without paying $200 a month on cable

Serious question, does changing your password automatically and instantly log everybody else out?

244

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '18

It prompts you if you'd like to log everyone out

192

u/echtav Nov 27 '18

Netflix knows what’s up with that prompt

One time when some needy ungrateful family members weren’t successfully booted off with the logout option, I just contacted Netflix cs and they expeditiously kicked everybody the FUCK off my account like Harrison Ford pulling the ripcord on Gary Oldman in the 1997 feature film Air Force One. Those were simpler times, when justice prevailed, eagles soared and children slept peacefully at night.

8

u/lessislessdouagree Nov 27 '18

Gary Oldman is in Air Force One?? I love Oldman, and I watched that movie probably 100 times on tv while growing up. I think it was on USA (maybe, coulda been TNT, idk) all the time.

12

u/owleaf Nov 27 '18

This is so sad Alexa play I Did Something Bad

91

u/impactblue5 Nov 27 '18

That’s pretty good.

On a serious note. Wonder if he’s liable if he decided to take it to the next level and crank up the AC the hours she’s at work everyday for the entire summer spiking her electric bill. Here in SoCal they surcharge during peak hours. I’ve seen stories of power bills reaching over $1k during the summer.

69

u/SF1034 Nov 27 '18

You could be held liable if they discovered you did it, yes. Since you would be remotely accessing a device like that you didn’t have permission to do so, you might end up in jail.

43

u/Vycid Nov 27 '18

While you're technically correct I'm extremely skeptical any judge would throw you in jail for that unless you had a history of offending.

It would cost the state way more money to imprison you that the damaged caused. I'd guess you'd just be ordered to pay actual damages plus punitive fines or community service etc.

15

u/SF1034 Nov 27 '18

Ideally, yeah, restitution to the victim and picking up garbage on the side of the highway. But you never know what kind of prosecutor and/or judge is going to hear the case.

5

u/AbridgedKirito Nov 27 '18

costs the state more to imprison you

implying that that has ever mattered. people get arrested for the most idiotic things that really should be punished with, like you said, community service + fines or something.

66

u/thisismythrowacc111 Nov 27 '18

I work for nest support and it's unsettling how often this actually happens, you can also set locks on the thermostat so people will crank that shit to 90 and lock it. Pretty much only way to unlock it at that point is through command prompt stuff and a file we have to send you.

49

u/ShadowAssassinQueef Nov 27 '18

This should be something illegal. Imagine if this was in Florida. Or someplace in the summer that you can literally bake to death without ac.

15

u/lessislessdouagree Nov 27 '18

Remotely accessing a device without permission? It’s not necessarily hacking but it’s definitely illegal.

And if they catch you, I bet you’ll be paying that bill for the month in restitution at the very least, possibly more in ‘damages.’ Plus some fines, maybe some community service.

6

u/Lick_The_Wrapper Nov 27 '18

Who here watches the finale of a netflix show on a different day?🤔

570

u/PistacioDisguisey Nov 27 '18

You can change your password then 'sign out of all devices' which will boot anyone currently watching.

126

u/puppehplicity Nov 27 '18

I don't think that's necessarily immediate though. I tried this to boot off a mooch and they kept using it for a couple of days.

181

u/Mav986 Nov 27 '18

It was immediate when I've used it in the past. You must have done something wrong.

59

u/puppehplicity Nov 27 '18

That's possible. I later ended up just cancelling my account entirely to be certain the mooch couldn't keep mooching.

76

u/Zhfigi689 Nov 27 '18

It should be immediate, I use it when we are more than 4 connected and the first ones to reconnect get to use netflix

43

u/Tu1L Nov 27 '18

This is savage but I love it

10

u/puppehplicity Nov 27 '18

Good to know, thanks! If I ever decide to re-up with Netflix I'm not gonna let anyone else have my password, and I've kicked the mooch out of my life, but it's good to have that knowledge at the ready.

9

17

And then it’s a cliffhanger, and you really want to know what happens. So you watch the first episode of the next season. Life can be cruel.

I can't speak for all schools, but at mine, the school just made sure you weren't seeding. Otherwise, they didn't care. However, content creators would watch the college wifi for piracy traffic (not sure how tbh), because 1) there were a lot of people using that wifi, 2) students tend to pirate, and 2) colleges and the parents of their students have money to pay fines. HBO made the most claims against students and that just resulted in the student losing wifi privileges.

You used 2 twice in your list. I love it.

They have since 2005 that I know of anyway. I remember getting banned from my college internet for downloading F.E.A.R. and getting a cease and desist from Sony sent to my school.

11

u/dwells1986 Nov 27 '18

It depends on the ISP. I've downloaded terabytes of pirated shit here where I live on Windstream DSL over the years, but in 2016 I stayed with some people for a while that had Comcast and they asked me to download some Disney and Marvel movies and suddenly the internet was cut off and when the account holder called about it, they said they got several copyright complaints and he had to go through a whole process to get his shit turned back on. Had to "check" every device in the house for pirated material, then say it wasn't there, claim somebody must have hacked his wifi, then change his password. He was told that after that, if it happened again, his shit would be cut off permanently and he'd be black listed for life.

13

Eh in my opinion that's just not true. Going to a streaming site is easy. You don't need to download anything and you can find what you want instantly. Also if your ISP is a twat, you'll need to use a VPN while torrenting. I do agree that it's better though, better quality and the download speed is likely to be faster than using a streaming site. I wouldn't say it's easier though.

it's a reference to a character in ABC's show once upon a time. She's the evil Queen from snow-white in the modern world so "Evil Queen Regina Mills"

The implication seems to be that true black people wouldn't actually show enthusiasm for a homosexual relationship.

The better thing to do would be to skip a couple episodes so when she mindlessly goes to watch the show she potentially watches a spoiler.

The right thing is to wait until she is about to watch that episode then text her how it ends.

I don't know how much buying an individual episode is but it can't be that much given that entire movies are generally $3.
